Hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Specific to Rights of Workers

International Workers' Day, also known as Labour Day celebrated to protect the rights of the workers throughout the world on 1s day of May. Held since 1889, the day highlights the plight of workers, their working conditions. The necessity was felt to protect the rights of the workers as in most cases they were under paid and under priveleged.

But would you believe that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ talked of the rights of the workers more than fourteen centuries ago? The Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ shows how Islam encompasses laws to protect the rights of the workers and emphasized the need to pay their wages in time.

This short Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Ibn Majah (The Chapters on Pawning كتاب الرهون / Chapter # 4 Wages of Workers باب أَجْرِ الأُجَرَاءِ ) as Hadith number # 2443, shared herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ عَطِيَّةَ السُّلَمِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ أَعْطُوا الأَجِيرَ أَجْرَهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَجِفَّ عَرَقُهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries.”

Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)

Islam lays emphasis on rights of every individual, be a it workers, teacher, or even someone's wife. None should be treated miserably and harshly and be paid what is due to them.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Revert Experiences: How reading Qur'an melts hearts to enter fold of Islam

Ignorance always leads to misunderstandings, mistrust or even hatred. This is especially true in case of understanding religions. Although, Christianity is the leading religion of the world, Islam is growing more rapidly and winning hearts of those who venture to read and understand Qur'an and Sunnah of last of the prophets Muhammad ﷺ.

The rapid growth of Islam is despite the fact that disinformation is spread about Islam with full throttle and Muslims are more often than not portrayed as terrorists and miscreants whenever an untoward incident takes places anywhere in the world. The term Islamophobia is just one of the latest efforts to discredit Islam and Qur'an. There have been many incidents of tearing and burning of copies of Qur'an in the West and beating and slashing Muslims in India, forcing them to drink urine of cow and compelling them to proclaim Hindu slogans.

There have been priests and monks who are seen uttering blatant lies about Islam and twisting meanings of verses of Qur'an to portray Islam as a brutal religion. But such efforts to belittle Islam and discredit the Muslims are proving to have positive impact on non-Muslims and more and more people, who instead of giving in to biased and deceitful propaganda, are trying to read and understand Qur'an to know the truth. There have been many who started reading Qur'an to find faults in it, ended up entering in the fold of Islam.

Today in our series of revert Experiences, we share a personal account, wherein a born Christian who just took Islam as her research topic and found it to be the truth rather than a lie as has been so portrayed. And when she read the opening verses of Surah Al-ʻAlaq or The Clot, is the 96th chapter of the Qur'an, which in fact were the first verses of revelations to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, she was flabbergasted to read the formation of human embryo. Reading something that science has only discovered in the last two centuries, she was amazed to find that no one except our Creator could have it revealed. The truth made her cry and was the final step to proclaim Shahadah and enter the fold of Islam.

Supplication Attributed to Prophet Noah (Nuh علي السلام) in Qur'an

Man can never fathom the wisdom behind Divine actions, not even the prophets. We more often than not are momentarily awe stricken when something very unusual happens to us and we lament as if we have been unnecessarily wronged. But when the Divine Wisdom starts to unfold in time, we begin to understand the many WHYs we earlier had.

There are many examples given in this context in the Qur'an which are to stress upon the servants of their Lord to bow to the Divine Will and be rest assured that Divine wisdom is far above the ordinary mindset of humans who cannot fathom the depth of Divine Wisdom.

Today we share the 47th verse of Surah 11. Hud, of one such incident wherein even Prophet Noah (Nuh علي السلام) could not understand the Divine Wisdom when God did not allow him to save his son by taking him onboard the ark before ethe great flood. The Qur'an has cited the story of the drowning of the son of Prophet Noah in the verses earlier to the selected verse, a summary of which is given in explanation of the verse. The purpose of this Godly action is to bring home to the people that Allah's decrees are absolutely just and final.

Noah, in his natural affection and respect for ties of relationship, was overcome with human weakness in wishing to reverse the Decree of Allah. It was not sin but ignorance. His ignorance was corrected by divine inspiration, and he immediately saw the full Truth, acknowledged his error, and asked for Allah's forgiveness and mercy. This is the standard set for us all.

Those who have watched the movie Noah's Ark, may find this incident ill reported as the unfaithful son was taken onboard and created mischief on the ark. It was shown later that the unfaithful son walked away after the ark had settled when the flood water subsided.

Thus, for correcting the misinformation, we share the actual story as narrated in the Qur'an.

قَالَ رَبِّ اِنِّىۡۤ اَعُوۡذُ بِكَ اَنۡ اَسۡـئَلَكَ مَا لَـيۡسَ لِىۡ بِهٖ عِلۡمٌ​ؕ وَاِلَّا تَغۡفِرۡ لِىۡ وَتَرۡحَمۡنِىۡۤ اَكُنۡ مِّنَ الۡخٰسِرِيۡنَ‏ 
(11:47) Noah said: 'My Lord! I take refuge with You that I should ask you for that concerning which I have no knowledge. And if You do not forgive me and do not show mercy to me, I shall be among the losers.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
The admonition is needed lest Noah become one of those who are ignorant of the real ties and relationships, or unaware of God’s promise and its interpretation. For God’s promise has been done and Noah’s true family has been saved. Noah, a true believer and God’s humble servant, trembles with fear that he may have erred in what he said to his Lord. He, therefore, appeals to Him, praying for His forgiveness.

Now that the storm has subsided and the ark has come to rest, the paternal love of a distressed father is once again felt by Noah. He makes this appeal to God: “Noah called out to his Lord, saying: ‘Lord, my son is of my family. Surely Your promise always comes true, and You are the most just of judges.’” (Verse 45) Noah makes clear that he has absolutely no doubt that God is just and wise. Nothing He does is without reason. Yet he has been promised that his family will be safe and now he requests that God fulfil the promise He made to spare his family. God’s answer states the fact which Noah has overlooked. By God’s standards and according to His principles, one’s family are not necessarily one’s blood relations. The true relationship is that of faith. This son was not a believer, and as such he was not a member of the family of Noah, the Prophet.

The answer is firm and emphatic. Indeed, there is an element of reproach and warning in the answer: “‘Noah,’ He answered, ‘he was not of your family; his was unrighteous conduct. Do not question Me about matters of which you have no knowledge. I admonish you lest you become one of the ignorant.” (Verse 46) A great principle of this religion states that the paramount relationship that exists between individuals is not one based on family affinity: “He was not of your family; his was an unrighteous conduct.” Your relationship with him is thus severe despite the fact that he was your own son. Since the basic tie between the two of you does not exist, no other tie has any significance.

Since Noah’s prayer requested the fulfilment of a promise which he felt had not happened, the answer includes an implicit reproach and warning: “Do not question Me about matters of which you have no knowledge. I admonish you lest you become one of the ignorant.” (Verse 46) The admonition is needed lest Noah become one of those who are ignorant of the real ties and relationships, or unaware of God’s promise and its interpretation. One of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi notes that this also served as a warning to the Quraish who considered themselves to be immune from the torment of Allah simply because they were the descendants of Prophet Abraham, and had several gods and goddesses as their interceders. Likewise, it was a warning to the Jews and the Christians who cherished, and still cherish, such beliefs, nay, even to those Muslims, who foolishly believe that their saintly ancestors and holy people will guard them against the consequences of the justice of Allah. For the tragic scene depicted here categorically refutes such false expectations and beliefs, saying, "O foolish people! Why do you cherish such false hopes? When Our Prophet Noah could not save his son who was drowned before his very eyes, and his prayer for the son was not only rejected but he was rebuked for making such a prayer, how can you then expect that anyone much less than a Prophet can deliver you from the justice of Allah?"

The Rewards For Reciting The Qur'an (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Every noble action or deed in Islam carries a lot of reward. It should be endeavour of each Muslim to bag these reward points as much as one can for these would weigh heavily and would become intercessors for them on the Day of Resurrection. And one of the best ways to earn goodness and bag reward points is to recite the Qur'an for it is the Book of God. And Allah feels pleased when a servant of His recites His Divine verses. 

There is a Hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in which the revered Prophet of Allah has given good tidings for two categories of believers who will be rewarded more than each other. 

This Hadith is mentioned in Sunan Abi Dawud (Book # 8 Prayer (Kitab Al-Salat): Detailed Injunctions about Witr كتاب الوتر / Chapter # 500 Regarding the Rewards for Reciting the Qur'an باب فِي ثَوَابِ قِرَاءَةِ الْقُرْآنِ ) as Hadith number # 1454, given herein under:

حَدَّثَنَا مُسْلِمُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامٌ، وَهَمَّامٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ زُرَارَةَ بْنِ أَوْفَى، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ الَّذِي يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ وَهُوَ مَاهِرٌ بِهِ مَعَ السَّفَرَةِ الْكِرَامِ الْبَرَرَةِ وَالَّذِي يَقْرَؤُهُ وَهُوَ يَشْتَدُّ عَلَيْهِ فَلَهُ أَجْرَانِ ‏"‏‏.‏

'Aishah reported the Prophet (ﷺ) as saying:
One who is skilled in the Qur'an is associated with the noble, upright recording angels, and he who falters when he recites the Qur'an and finds it difficult for him will have a double reward.
Grade: Sahih (Al-Albani) 

In the above quoted Hadith, two categories of believers are mentioned:
  • Those who have remembered the Qur'an and are skilled in reciting it. These are the ones who will be associated with the noble and upright recording angels.
  • The second category is of those believers who recite the Qur'an and falter for finding it difficult to read. This category of believers will get double the reward of the first category for they despite finding it difficult to read Qur'an, still endeavour to read it, and yet continue doing so and not losing heart.
In Surah 73. Al Muzzamil, verse 4, the Prophet of Allah has been asked to:
اَوۡ زِدۡ عَلَيۡهِ وَرَتِّلِ الۡقُرۡاٰنَ تَرۡتِيۡلًا ؕ‏ 
(73:4) or add to it a little; and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly.

That is do not recite the Qur'an quickly and in haste, but slowly and distinctly: pause at every verse so that the mind understands the meaning and purport of divine revelation well and takes effect from it. We often see believers reciting the Qur'an as if in a hurry and moving on at a fast speed. By doing this, they may skip some important pauses and other instructions of etiquette of reciting the Qur'an. And they may lose their concentration to understand what is being said. So, recite the Qur'an slowly and if one finds it difficult, then read and reread rather than skipping or vaguely going forward.

Who does Allah help?

I share today part of the 11th verse from Surah 13. Ar Ra'd (The Thunder) which I have been listening to since my childhood. This part of the verse if applicable to everyone, especially the Muslims of today who are dependent more on their supplication to seek Divine help to ease their sufferings or effect a meaningful change in their lives, rather than first striving hard to make their situation change through hard work and resilience. Though the Divine message is crystal clear, I thought to let my viewers know how the verse is interpreted by the scholars for easy understanding the core of the verse.

لَهٗ مُعَقِّبٰتٌ مِّنۡۢ بَيۡنِ يَدَيۡهِ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهٖ يَحۡفَظُوۡنَهٗ مِنۡ اَمۡرِ اللّٰهِ​ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوۡمٍ حَتّٰى يُغَيِّرُوۡا مَا بِاَنۡفُسِهِمۡ​ؕ وَاِذَاۤ اَرَادَ اللّٰهُ بِقَوۡمٍ سُوۡۤءًا فَلَا مَرَدَّ لَهٗ​ۚ وَمَا لَهُمۡ مِّنۡ دُوۡنِهٖ مِنۡ وَّالٍ‏ 
(13:11) There are guardians over everyone, both before him and behind him, who guard him by Allah's command. Verily Allah does not change a people's condition unless they change their inner selves. And when Allah decides to make a people suffer punishment, no one can avert it. Nor can any be of help to such people against Allah.

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
Lit., "that which is in themselves". This statement has both a positive and a negative connotation: i.e., God does not withdraw His blessings from men unless their inner selves become depraved just as He does not bestow His blessings upon willful sinners until they change their inner disposition and become worthy of His grace. (cf. 8:53),
(8:53) This happened because Allah is not one to change the favour which He has bestowed upon a people until they have changed their attitude. Surely Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
In its wider sense, this is an illustration of the divine law of cause and effect (sunnat Allah) which dominates the lives of both individuals and communities, and makes the rise and fall of civilizations dependent on people's moral qualities and the changes in "their inner selves".

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
This is a reference to the established practice of God according to which just as God selects individuals and makes them pass through trials of patience and gratitude, in a similar way, He chooses nations for this purpose. As a result of this selection, when a nation climbs to heights, God does not change His dealing with it unless it itself plunges into lowliness of character and shallowness of knowledge. This is an unalterable practice of God and in accordance with this established practice when He decides to punish and humiliate a nation after repeatedly warning it, no one can ward off this decision and no power in this world can help that nation against God. The annals of mankind bear witness to this pattern of rise and fall of nations.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
Allah sends His angels to watch them all the time, monitoring any changes they may introduce within themselves or in their way of living, and determines what He does with them on that basis. He does not change any grace, luxury or position of respect, or indeed any hardship or position of humiliation or weakness, until people have changed their actions, feelings and conditions. The change then fits what they themselves have changed. But God knows what they do or change even before they do it themselves, but the consequences of their action take place after they have done it.

This lays a great responsibility on human beings. It is God’s will that makes what He does with them dependent on what they themselves do. His laws operate on the basis of how they tackle these laws through their actions. The statement here is very clear, allowing no other interpretation. But it also signifies the position of honour God grants human beings as He has made them and their actions the means to implement God’s will with regard to their own position, status and welfare.

Having established this principle, the Sūrah highlights God’s changing the situation of any particular community for the worse. The gist of the first statement indicates that they have changed for the worse, and as a result God has willed them to MISSING TEXT. In this verse, only the evil alternative is mentioned so as to serve as a warning. If, by their actions, they deserve God’s punishment, then it is inevitable; it will not be averted. No support will rescue them from it.

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

Rules of the Divine Court: The Day when the man will be asked to read Book of his own Deeds

In one of our previous posts, we shared a rule of the Divine Ourt, which will be established on the Day of Judgement/Resurrection about "A Day when man's scroll (Book of Deeds) will be produced to him." That post was based on the 13th verse of Surah 17. Al Israa. Today we share the continuing post, the 14th verse, in which it is being said that man will be asked to read his scroll or the Book of his Deeds.

اِقۡرَاۡ كِتٰبَك َؕ كَفٰى بِنَفۡسِكَ الۡيَوۡمَ عَلَيۡكَ حَسِيۡبًا ؕ‏ 
(17:14) "Read your scroll; this Day you suffice to take account of yourself."

No matter how much a man hoodwinks others in the world of his true ugly face hidden behind his artificial face or no matter how much he deceives others by obscuring his bad deeds, dishonesty and corruption, he shall be ready to face the consequences on the Day of Resurrection when his scroll, which being updated each and every second by the two guardian angels, will be presented to him, un edited so that his true personality is presented in the Divine Court for Divine Justice. That day, the man will know how even small things which perhaps he many not remember will be seen written in his scroll. It will be the day when his worldly wealth, position, status or even his so-called intercessors will be of no help to him and he shall stand alone to finally be punished for his bad deeds.

Let us now see how renowned Musim exegetes have interpreted this verse:

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
(On that Day man will be informed of what (deeds) he sent forward, and what (deeds) he left behind. Nay! Man will be a witness against himself, though he may put forth his excuses.) Allah says:

(اقْرَأْ كَتَـبَكَ كَفَى بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيبًا (It will be said to him): "Read your Book. You yourself are sufficient as a reckoner against you this Day.') meaning, you have not been treated unjustly and nothing has been recorded against you except what you have done, because you remember everything that you have done, and no one will forget anything that he did. Everyone will be able to read his Book, whether he is literate or illiterate.

[And he said;] "O son of Adam, your Book has been opened for you, and two noble angels have been entrusted to accompany you, one on your right and one on your left. 
(عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٌ one sitting on the right and one on the left. ) [50:17] (recording man's deeds)
The one who is on your right records your good deeds, and the one who is on your left records your bad deeds. `So do whatever you want, a lot or a little, until you die, then I will fold up your Book and tie it to your neck with you in your grave. Then when you come out on the Day of Resurrection, you will find the Book wide open, so read your Book.' By Allah, the One Who makes you accountable for your own deeds is being perfectly just.' These are some of the best words Al-Hasan ever spoke, may Allah have mercy on him.

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
The "record" and the subsequent "account" represent man's total comprehension, on Judgment Day, of all his past life (Razi). This allegory occurs in the Qur'an in many formulations, e.g., in 37:19 or 39:68, and perhaps most incisively in {50:22} - "now We have lifted from thee thy veil, and sharp is thy sight today!"

Yusuf Ali Explanation:
Our true accusers are our own deeds. Why not look to them instead of vainly prying into something superstitious which we call a book of fortune or a book of omens?

So, my dear brother and sister in Islam, know that we will be held accountable for every bad deed that we commit here in the world and will be rewarded for every good deed. So let our scroll weigh heavily because of our good and noble deeds rather than deeds that will lead us to the torment of Jahannam - Hell.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Prophetic Supplication attributed to Prophet Nuh (Noah) in Qur'an

Prophets of Allah had been the chosen people who were kind, considerate and humane. While conveying the Divine Commandments to their people, they have always tried their level best that wrath of Allah may not befall on them for their rejection of the Divine Commandments. Yet many people disobeyed and were subjected to severe Heavenly punishment, as was witnessed during the great flood in the time of Prophet Nuh (Noah, may peace be upon him). 
Noah prayed that God not leave any of the disbelievers on the earth as they will lead His servants astray and beget only sinners and disbelievers.  Noah also prayed for forgiveness for himself, his parents, and whoever entered his house as a believer.  Noah’s prayer extended to all believers, asking for their forgiveness as well!
It appears from Noah’s prayer that, in his own times, evil had reached its final limit.  Misguided beliefs and thoughts had become so prevalent in society that any child born and brought up in this society would have gone astray.  When this stage had been reached, Noah’s people were destined to face nothing less than destruction by Noah’s flood.  They were drowned and sent to Hell for their evildoings.  They found no one to help them against God.
Herein under we share the supplication by Prophet Noah (may peace be upon him) which he made after the great flood was over and he then wanted all his people to be protected from any other torment. This supplication appears in the 28th verse of Surah 71. Nuh in Qur'an as under:

رَبِّ اغۡفِرۡلِىۡ وَلِـوَالِدَىَّ وَلِمَنۡ دَخَلَ بَيۡتِىَ مُؤۡمِنًا وَّلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِيۡنَ وَالۡمُؤۡمِنٰتِؕ وَلَا تَزِدِ الظّٰلِمِيۡنَ اِلَّا تَبَارًا
(71:28) My Lord, forgive me and my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer, and forgive all believers, both men and women, and do not increase the wrong-doers in anything except perdition.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
(رَّبِّ اغْفِرْ لِى وَلِوَلِدَىَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيْتِىَ مُؤْمِناً My Lord! Forgive me, and my parents, and him who enters my home as a believer,) Ad-Dahhak said, "This means, my Masjid.'' However, there is no harm in understanding the Ayah according to its apparent meaning, which would be that he (Nuh) supplicated for every person who entered his house who was a believer. 

Then he said, (وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَـتِ and all the believing men and women.) He supplicated for all of the believing men and women, and that includes those of them who were living and those of them who were dead. For this reason, it is recommended to supplicate like this, in following the example of Nuh, and that which has been reported in the narrations and well-known, legislated supplications. 

Then, he said,(وَلاَ تَزِدِ الظَّـلِمِينَ إِلاَّ تَبَاراً And to the wrongdoers, grant You no increase but destruction!) As-Suddi said, "But destruction.' Mujahid said, "But loss.'' This means in both this life and in the Hereafter.This is the end of the Tafsir of Surat Nuh. And all praise and thanks are due to Allah.

Yusuf Ali Explanation:
Indeed, he prays for himself, his parents, his guests, and all who in earnest faith turn to Allah, in all ages and in all places. Praying for their forgiveness is also praying for the destruction of sin.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
 It is evident from this that in this phase of declaring his acquittal from his people, Noah (sws) had proclaimed that whoever wants to protect himself from punishment should take refuge in his house before its arrival.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
Noah made his sweeping appeal to God, and God answered his prayer, washing that evil of the face of the earth. Noah ended his appeal against the unbelievers by a request to God to increase their ruin.

His prayer that God forgives him his sins is an aspect of the good manners all prophets maintain when addressing God. Noah knows that he is only a human being appealing to God. He knows that no matter how diligent he is in his obedience and worship, he makes mistakes and remains short of the high standard believers should try to attain. He also realises the truth the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) later expressed when he said that no human being, not even a prophet, is admitted into heaven on the basis of his actions only, unless God bestows His grace on him. This appeal for forgiveness is exactly what he called upon his people to do, but they were too arrogant to take heed. Yet Noah, God's noble messenger who has untiringly sought to advocate God's message, seeks God's forgiveness at the moment he presents his account.

In this way does the surah conclude after having given us a bright picture of Noah's struggle, as contrasted with the unbelievers' stubborn rejection. It leaves us with feelings of love towards this great prophet, and admiration for his hard struggle. It strengthens our resolve to follow the same route no matter what hardship we have to endure and no matter what sacrifices we are called upon to make. It is the only route that ensures mankind attains the highest standard possible in their life on earth.

Rules of the Divine Court: A Day when Man's scroll (book of Deeds) will be produced for him

Man is the most foolish of the species that the Lord of the worlds has ever been made. Although he is very intelligent in his worldly life, he is utterly foolish and naive when it comes to preparing himself for the Divine Court which will be established on the Day of Resurrection. He thinks that he is intelligent enough and will be able to tackle the affairs of the Divine Court and may even hoodwink the rules of the Divine Court or will be able to take shield from his worldly intercessors and get away from his bad deeds.

For such people, here comes a Divine Warning which cautions the man that every action of his being recorded by the two angel guardians and being inscribed in the scroll which will be compiled and produced for him to show him his dossier and asked" "Read your scroll; this Day you suffice to take account of yourself."

This caution is contained in the 13th verse of Surah 17 Al Israa (The Ascend - The Night Journey) given herein under

وَكُلَّ اِنۡسَانٍ اَلۡزَمۡنٰهُ طٰۤـئِرَهٗ فِىۡ عُنُقِهٖ​ؕ وَنُخۡرِجُ لَهٗ يَوۡمَ الۡقِيٰمَةِ كِتٰبًا يَّلۡقٰٮهُ مَنۡشُوۡرًا‏
(17:13) We have fastened every man's omen to his neck. On the Day of Resurrection, We shall produce for him his scroll in the shape of a wide-open book, (saying):

اِقۡرَاۡ كِتٰبَك َؕ كَفٰى بِنَفۡسِكَ الۡيَوۡمَ عَلَيۡكَ حَسِيۡبًا ؕ‏ 
(17:14) "Read your scroll; this Day you suffice to take account of yourself."

"We have fastened the augury of every man to his own neck": therefore, one does not need to take omens from a bird. : This is to remove the superstition of the disbelievers who used to take omens from birds etc., as if to say, "The causes and consequences of good fortune or bad fate exist in man's own person. He merits good fortune because of his own good conduct and good judgment, and likewise, suffers the consequences of evil fate by the lack of these". This was necessitated because foolish people always try to attribute their misfortunes to external causes, when in fact our fate depends on our own deeds, good or bad. If they probe into the causes, they will find that their fate was decided by their own good or bad qualities and judgments.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: 
(And We have fastened every man's Ta'irah (deeds) to his neck,) The word Ta'irah (lit. something that flies) refers to man's deeds which fly from him, as Ibn `Abbas, Mujahid and others said. It includes both good deeds and bad deeds, he will be forced to acknowledge them and will be rewarded or punished accordingly.

In this regard, Allah says elsewhere in Qur'an:
(So, whosoever does good equal to the weight of a speck of dust shall see it. And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of a speck of dust shall see it.) (99:7-8). 
((Remember) that the two receivers (recording angels) receive (each human being), one sitting on the right and one on the left (to note his or her actions). Not a word does he (or she) utter but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it).) (50:17-18)
(But verily, over you (are appointed angels in charge of mankind) to watch you, Kiraman (Honorable) Katibin - writing down (your deeds), they know all that you do.) (82:10-12)
(You are only being requited for what you used to do.) (52:16)
(Whosoever works evil, will have the recompense thereof.) (4:123)
The meaning is that the deeds of the sons of Adam are preserved, whether they are great or small, and they are recorded night and day, morning and evening.

(وَنُخْرِجُ لَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَـمَةِ كِتَابًا يَلْقَـهُ مَنْشُوراً and on the Day of Resurrection, We shall bring out for him a Book which he will find wide open.) meaning, `We will collect all of his deeds for him in a Book which will be given to him on the Day of Resurrection, either in his right hand, if he is one of the blessed, or in his left hand if he is one of the wretched.'

(مَنْشُوراً wide open) means, it will be open for him and others to read all of his deeds, from the beginning of his life until the end.

(On that Day man will be informed of what (deeds) he sent forward, and what (deeds) he left behind. Nay! Man will be a witness against himself, though he may put forth his excuses.) (75:13-15) 

Allah then says: ((It will be said to him): اقْرَأْ كَتَـبَكَ كَفَى بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيبًا  "Read your Book. You yourself are sufficient as a reckoner against you this Day.') meaning, you have not been treated unjustly and nothing has been recorded against you except what you have done, because you remember everything that you have done, and no one will forget anything that he did. Everyone will be able to read his Book, whether he is literate or illiterate.

(And We have fastened every man's Ta'irah (deeds) to his neck,) The neck is mentioned because it is a part of the body that has no counterpart, and when one is restrained by it, he has no escape. Ma`mar narrated from Qatadah, "His deeds,

Muhammad Asad Explanation:
The word ta'ir literally signifies a "bird" or, more properly, a "flying creature". Since the pre-Islamic Arabs often endeavoured to establish a good or bad omen and, in general, to foretell the future from the manner and direction in which birds would fly, the term ta'ir came to be tropically used in the sense of "fortune", both good and evil, or "destiny". (See in this connection surah {3}, verse [49], and surah {7}, verse [131].) It should, however, be borne in mind that the Qur'anic concept of "destiny" relates not so much to the external circumstances of and events in man's life as, rather, to the direction which this life takes in result of one's moral choices: in other words, it relates to man's spiritual fate - and this, in its turn, depends - as the Qur'an so often points out - on a person's inclinations, attitudes and conscious actions (including self-restraint from morally bad actions or, alternatively, a deliberate omission of good actions). Hence, man's spiritual fate depends on himself and is inseparably linked with the whole tenor of his personality; and since it is God who has made man responsible for his behaviour on earth, He speaks of Himself as having "tied every human being's destiny to his neck".

Yusuf Ali Explanation:
Tair, literally a bird, hence an omen, an evil omen, fate. Cf. xxxvi. 19. The Arabs, like the ancient Romans, sought to read the mysteries of human fate from the flight of birds. And many of us in our own day seek to read our future fortunes by similar superstitions. We read in the previous verse that there are Signs of Allah, but they are not meant to subserve the vulgar purpose of disclosing our future destiny in a worldly sense. 
(17:12) We have made night and day as two signs. We made the sign of the night devoid of light, and made the sign of the day radiant that you may seek the bounty of your Lord and know the computation of years and numbers. Thus, We have expounded everything in detail to keep everything distinct from the other.
They are meant for quite a lot of other purposes, as we have explained. Our real fate does not depend upon birds or omens or stars. It depends on our deeds; good or evil, and they hang round our necks.

 These deeds, good or evil, will be embodied in a scroll which will be quite open to us in the light of the Day of Judgment, however much we may affect to be ignorant of it now or waste our energies in prying into mysteries that do not concern us.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
This expression means that whatever is going to befall a person will be a consequence of his deeds. Hence it is tied to his neck in this world. He reaches the presence of God after acquiring his Hell or Paradise in this very world. Nothing is going to happen to him in the Hereafter of which the seeds he does not sow in this world. Hence, instead of making haste in demanding punishment, he should reflect on the arrangement he has made to secure himself from it.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
The Arabic phraseology of this verse provides a highly graphic description which uses the word, ‘bird’, in place of ‘action’, as used in the translated text. Thus, we have here a metaphor referring to what flies of a person’s actions and becomes tied around his neck, so that it never parts from him. Thus does the Qur’ān in graphically describing things in order to emphasize its point. A person’s actions do not leave him, and he cannot disown them. The same applies to the wide-open record of all his actions. Thus, whatever he has done in life is laid bare. He cannot hide, ignore or disown it. Both descriptions, of the bird denoting action and the record thrown open, produce a very strong effect that adds to the fears experienced on that very difficult day when nothing remains hidden. Everyone is told to read their own records because, “Sufficient it is for you today that your own soul should make out your account.” (Verse 14)

Let us then be prepared to face our scroll one day. and time is still now that our scroll is written well as is desired by our Lord, and not what the Evil tells us to do, for on Day of Resurrection the Evil will clearly absolve him of his part in derailing man in his worldly life and blame him for listening to him and following his tricks.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.
