Surah Ad Duha (The Morning Light): A surah about promise of Allah - never to abandon those who remember Him

Man, no matter how holy or faithful to Allah he may be, at some point in time of his life succumbs to negativities around him and gets into a state of despair, losing all hope of standing on one's feet again. Such negativities or propaganda can even effect the prophets of Allah, though specially chosen. Such was the case in point when our revered Prophet Muhammad ﷺ suddenly stopped getting the Divine revelations. This created a lot of stir and happiness among the disbelievers of Makkah who mocked him that he has been abandoned by Allah and that is prophethood is finally over.

Obviously, for Prophet Muhammad ﷺ it was a big setback for suddenly he felt all alone and abandoned since there were no Divine revelation in sight. Under such trying and testing times,  Sūrah Aḍ-Ḍuḥā " الضحى " the 93rd sürah part of the 30th Juzʼ of  Qur'ān was revealed reassuring Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that indeed Allah has not abandoned His servant and that he should recall the days when he was an orphan and yet he was placed at a very high pedestal of prophethood.

In fact, in this sūrah, the vicissitude of human life is referred to, and a message of hope and consolation is given to man's soul from Allah's past mercies, and he is bidden to pursue the path of goodness and proclaim the bounties of Allah.

We have already presented the verse by verse exegesis / tafsir of this surah which our readers can access from the link given below:

However, today we share an incredible explanation of Surah Ad Duha by one of the most eminent scholars of present times, Nouman Ali Khan, making the understanding of the Surah much more easier and understandable. Please watch the video:
About Nouman Ali Khan: Born to a Pakistani family, Nouman Ali Khan is an American Muslim speaker and Arabic instructor who founded the Bayyinah Institute for Arabic and Qur’anic Studies, after serving as an instructor of Arabic at Nassau Community College. He has been named one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre of Jordan.

While this Surah was specially revealed to console the restless Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, desperately waiting for the continuation of the Divine revelations, this should also serve as a guideline and Divine reassurance for all Muslims that if we are sincere and faithful in our religion and seek help only from Allah alone, we shall never be abandoned or left alone, In sha Allah.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is our duty to convey only to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Feeling Depressed? Recite Surah Ad Duha

Life has never been a smooth sailing for anyone. One has times of happiness, comfort and leisure - times when many do not take a time out to thank one's Creator for the comforts provided to them. But when the bad times come, when suddenly there is gloom and depression, dejection and low modes, suddenly one remembers Allah and prays for a relief and escape from one's miseries. Lucky are those who turn over the pages of the Qur'an and find some verses that give comfort to one's heart and reassures them of Allah's mercy.

Surah Ad Duha, the 93rd chapter of the Qur'an that one must recite in times of gloom and depression. For it is the surah that brought comfort to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when he was undergoing extreme stress and was in a sate of depression.

It so happened that after the initial revelation of Surah Al Alaq, the first verses of which were revealed to Prophet of Allah in the Cave of Hira and heralded the prophethood on him. But then suddenly there was a long silence. Some say it was 15 or forty days, some even say it was for six months that the Prophet of Allah did not receive any revelation. This caused the Holy Prophet (upon whom be Allah's peace) to be deeply distressed and grieved. He perhaps felt that he has been abandoned by Allah and that Allah had forsaken him.

It was then that he was given the consolation that revelation had not been stopped because of some displeasure but this was necessitated by the same expediency as underlies the peace and stillness of the night after the bright day, as if to say: "If you had continuously been exposed to the intensely bright light of Revelation (Wahi) your nerves could not have endured it. Therefore, an interval was given in order to afford you peace and tranquility."

and this was the time when Surah Ad Duha was revealed in full which reassured Prophet of Allah and his spirits regained. So whenever one is in depression of feeling low, one must recite Surah Ad Duha. However, mere recitation is not enough, rather one mus know the translation and tafsir / exegesis of the surah to understand how Allah enlightened the gloomy heart of His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and how he was reassured of Allah's help when he was orphan in his childhood and utterly poor.

Please listen to the video below, a heart wrenching commentary / tafsir by Sheikh Tawfique of Surah Ad-Duha and how it can raise our spirits when feeling down, dejected or depressed:
Have faith in Allah always and turn to him in good times to thank Him fro the bounties so bestowed and in hard times to ask forgiveness and seek solace from the bad times. It is only true and form faith in Allah that can alleviate us of our sufferings and bring delight to us.

Understanding the Holy Quran: How Surah Ad-Duha Can Change Your Life

Surah Ad-Duha, the 93rd chapter / surah of the Holy Qur'an if understood properly can change a man's life as it did the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when he was in great distress and low morale.  The surah guides the believers and shows them a way out of their despair and low days.

We have already presented the exegesis of the Surah Ad-Duha in one of our earlier posts. But the purpose of this post is to share an enlightening commentary on Surah Ad-Duha, wherein it is deliberated upon how one can change one's life if one seeks guidance given in the surah by Allah, the Almighty to His last Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when he was in great despair due to non receipt of the Divine revelations for a number of days and the pagans of Makkah had started to mock the Prophet of Allah that he had been abandoned by the Allah.

As per some sources, it is quoted that "Umm Jamil, wife of Abu Lahab, who was an aunt of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and whose house adjoined his, said to him: It appears your Satan has forsaken you."

In such trying times, Allah promised His Prophet through this surah that "Soon would follow what is better for you and that you shall be rewarded and given so much that you will be well pleased." This promise was fulfilled during the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and all Arabia, from the southern coasts to the Syrian frontiers of the Byzantine empire and the Iraqi frontiers of the Persian empire in the north, and from the Persian Gulf in the east to the Red Sea in the west, came under his control.

That is why Surah Ad Duha needs to be understood for it took out the Prophet of Allah from darkness of despair and depression and showed him the light and reminded him that didn't Allah look after him when he was orphan, very young and no one to rely upon. Those were the days when despite all odds, from where he grew up to be a strong young man and a successful businessman and later to be the Prophet of Allah.

Those of us who lose heart when confronted with difficult times and lose any hope, there must listen to this enlightening commentary by Sh Tawfique Chowdhury to an audience in Australia sometime ago:

I am sure after listening to this video, you will be a better man than you were before. May Allah help us to seek guidance from the Holy Qur'an by understanding its meaning and helping others who are in distress by making them understand what we now know.

You may refer to our post "114 Chapters (Sūrahs) of the Holy Qur'an" for translation, meaning and summary / exegesis of other chapters (Though not complete but building up from 30th Part backwards for chapters in 30th Part are shorter and easier to understand).
