Selected verses from Selected Surahs of Al-Qurʾān (Reference Page)

Al-Qurʾān is the last of the four Divine Scriptures revealed by Allah through last of the prophets, Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم. It consists of 114 Surahs, which can be translated as chapters. But unlike chapters of a book which contain only one subject discussed in each chapter, the Surahs of Al-Qurʾān contains many subjects, specially in the longer Surahs.

We have been sharing tafseer / detailed explanation of all these 114 Surahs in our previous posts. In addition to that, we have also been sharing selected verses that cover specific subjects, commandments, advices and guidelines for the benefit of our readers. in order to consolidate verses from a particular Surah, we are initiating this exclusive reference page to share selected verses from some of the important and lengthy Surahs of Al-Qurʾān:
We continue to add selected verses / ayat from more Surahs of Al-Qurʾān in due course.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎)  help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Al-Qurʾān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

Selected verses from Surah 5 Al Māʼidah (The Table [Spread with Food])

Surah al-Mā’idah (سورة المائدة) is the 5th Surah / chapter of the Qur’an. It’s a Medinan surah which indicates that it was revealed after the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ migrated to Madinah from Makkah when the plythetists of Makkah made it unbearable for the Muslims to stay there. It was revealed mostly in the later period life of of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.  Some parts were revealed shortly before the Prophet’s final Hajj and even near the end of his life, making it one of the last surahs revealed.

The Surah primarily addresses legal, ethical, and interfaith matters relevant to a growing Muslim community.

The Arabic word Al-Mā'idah (Arabic: ٱلْمَائدَة, romanized: al-Māʾidah) means 'The Table [Spread with Food]' or simply the "Meal" or "Banquet" . This name is taken from verses 112 to 115, which tell the request of the followers of Prophet 'Isa (Jesus) that Allah send down a meal from the sky as a sign of the truth of his message.

Timings and importance of its revelation
The Surah was revealed when the Muslim community was well established and governing Madinah. It was time then to lay down detailed instructions for the Muslim rulers and ordinary Muslims on how to live a life under the ambit of Islam. Thus the surah focuses on:
    • Laws related to halal and haram (permitted/forbidden)
    • Justice and leadership
    • Interfaith relations, especially with Jews and Christians
    • Fulfillment of covenants and moral accountability
We have already published a series of posts on Tafseer / detailed explanation of the Surah. The Surah being one of the longest verses of Qur'an, has thus been divided into four part for better understanding. The tafseer is based on intellectual work of some of the renowned Muslim scholars of their time. Those interested to read the tafseer, may refer to our reference page the link to which is given herein under:

Owing to the importance of subjects discussed in the Surah, we have already published a number of posts in some of the important issues mentioned in the Surah, the links to which are as given herein under:
In time, we will keep on adding other issues / commandments and guidelines as Divinely revelaed in the Surah.

Who is He Who heeds the prayers of the distressed when he calls out to Him

This is our first post in our series of posts on Who is He, that we will publish in due course about an invisible and unseen Divine Deity which many people do not beleive in. We Muslims, and many other who follow the Divine religions in true letter and spirit, know that Allah is that unseen and invisible Divine Deity that controls and manages the entire universe which none other than He created - a universe that astronomers believe is continueing to expand and no one shall ever be able to reach its farthesest boundaries.

Today we share the 62nd verse of Surah 27. An Naml (The ant) in which Allah answers that who is He who heeds the prayers of the distressed when he calls upon Him:

      اَمَّنۡ يُّجِيۡبُ الۡمُضۡطَرَّ اِذَا دَعَاهُ وَيَكۡشِفُ السُّوۡٓءَ وَيَجۡعَلُكُمۡ خُلَفَآءَ الۡاَرۡضِ ؕ ءَاِلٰـهٌ مَّعَ اللّٰهِ ؕ قَلِيۡلًا مَّا تَذَكَّرُوۡنَ ؕ‏
(27:62) Who is it Who heeds the prayers of the distressed when he calls out to Him and Who removes his affliction?76 And who is it Who makes you vicegerents of the earth? Is there any god associated with Allah (in this task)? How little do you reflect!

The phrase أَإِلَـٰهٌ مَّعَ اللَّـهِ "A deity with Allah?" is repeated 5 times in this Surah. This phrase does not occur in any of the Surah of the Qur'an and is unique to Surah an-Naml.

The Arab polytheists themselves knew and acknowledged that Allah alone could avert a disaster. Therefore, the Quran reminds them again and again that they implore Allah alone for help when they are confronted by a calamity. But when the calamity is removed, they start invoking others besides Allah. And this is not only true of the Arab polytheists but of all polytheists; so much so that even the Russian atheists who are regularly campaigning against God-worship, had to invoke God when in the Second World War they were tightly encircled by the German forces.

"Is there any god associated with Allah (in this task)? How little do you reflect!" This has two meanings: (1) “He raises one generation after the other and one nation after the other”; and (2) “He gives you power and authority to rule in the earth”.

After the brief explanation above, let's now deeply explore Surah An-Naml (27:62) which is a powerful verse about du‘ā (supplication), vulnerability, and Allah’s unmatched mercy.

      Verse Breakdown and Explanation
      1. “أَمَّن يُجِيبُ ٱلْمُضْطَرَّ إِذَا دَعَاهُ” - “Who is it that responds to the one in desperate need when he calls upon Him?”
      • Al-Muḍṭarr (المضطر) = the one who is utterly desperate, helpless, and broken — someone who has exhausted all worldly options.
      • This part of the verse emphasizes Allah’s exclusive power to answer du‘ā when no one else can.
      • Reflection
        • Allah responds not just to words, but to the depth of your heart’s need. When no one else hears or understands, He does — fully and instantly.
        • Allah has such power that when He decides to help someone all sources found in the universe needed for it are gathered by Him in the blink of an eye and He delivers that person from his grief and difficulty.
        • However, there is one thing to understand and that is when Allah says He hears and redresses one's grievance, it does not mean an instant redressal of the frievance. It is because every piece of the jigsaw puzzle tkaes its own time to fit in. What one may consider something to his benefit, it may not be suitable in the eyes of Allah. So instead Allah may bless him with something better beyond one's imagination. This may be immediate ot may take some time as per the plan of Allah.
      2. “وَيَكْشِفُ ٱلسُّوٓءَ” - “And who removes evil/harm?”
      • Yakshifu as-sū’ = removes not just pain, but any form of suffering: physical, emotional, spiritual, social.
      • Allah removes it in His wisdom — sometimes immediately, sometimes gradually, sometimes by giving strength to endure it.
      • Reflection: When you feel buried under hardship, this verse is a promise that Allah lifts what no one else can — when you turn to Him sincerely.
      3. “وَيَجْعَلُكُمْ خُلَفَآءَ ٱلْأَرْضِ” “And who makes you successors (khalīfah) on the earth?”
      • A reminder: Allah didn’t just create you — He entrusted you with a role on earth.
      • This is a reference to the established practice of Allah in accordance with which a nation becomes prominent, plays its role and then permanently leaves the stage of this world to vacate its place for the next. It is as if nations also follow the law of life and death which we observe among human beings. This obviously is a task in the sphere of Allah which can only be carried out by the creator of the heavens and the earth.
      • It is Allah who despite your weakness in moments of distress, empowers you to rise, recover, and carry responsibility.
      • Reflection: Even in desperation, you are still honored by Allah. You are not abandoned. You are chosen to carry meaning.
      4. “أَءِلَـٰهٌۭ مَّعَ ٱللَّهِ؟” “Is there any god besides Allah?”
      • A rhetorical, powerful question. No one else hears your heart like Allah. No one can respond the way He can.
      • Reflection: Allah invites you to detach from false hopes in people or things — and attach yourself to Him alone.
      5. “قَلِيلًۭا مَّا تَذَكَّرُونَ” “Little is it that you remember.”
      • A gentle reproach. Allah reminds us how easily we forget — especially when life is smooth.
      • The verse calls us to renew awareness, not just in distress, but always.
      Overall Meaning and Message
      • This verse is divine reassurance for:
        • The broken-hearted
        • The helpless
        • The overwhelmed
      • It tells you: ❝ In your most desperate moment, when even your voice trembles — Allah is listening. And only He has the power to respond with full knowledge, mercy, and wisdom. ❞
      • This verse teaches:
        • Sincerity in du‘ā matters more than eloquence
        • Desperation is a door to Allah’s nearness
        • Tawḥīd (Oneness of God) isn’t just belief — it’s trusting only Allah in your hardest moments
      Real-Life Spiritual Takeaway
When you're feeling Abandoned, Anxious, Drowning in a situation, ecite this verse. Reflect on it. Whisper your du‘ā.

And know this: The One who answered Yunus (عليه السلام) in the belly of the whale, and Maryam (عليها السلام) in childbirth, and Zakariyya (عليه السلام) in old age — is the same One who promises to hear you.
أمن يجيب المضطر إذا دعاه” - “Who is it that responds to the one in desperate need when he calls upon Him?

There is a very deep coherence between اَمَّنْ يُّجِيْبُ الْمُضْطَرَّ اِذَا دَعَاهُ (are they better or that [Lord] Who listens to the oppressed when he calls Him) and وَيَجْعَلُكُمْ خُلَفَآءَ الْاَرْضِ (and makes you the heir of the earth) the two parts of the verse. The implication is that they do not learn a lesson from these difficulties which they face in their lives nor from the rise and fall of nations. So, who can teach those who have such a weak memory?

Let's explore Surah An-Naml (27:62) in light of the Hadith, connecting both to reveal a deeper spiritual truth.
      • Qur’an:
        • "Amman yujeebu al-muḍṭarra itha da‘āhu wa yakshifu as-sū’a..." - "Who is it that responds to the distressed one when he calls upon Him, and who removes evil...?"
        • Meaning: Allah poses a rhetorical question here to emphasize His unique power and mercy:
          • He is the only one who truly responds when someone is in deep distress (muḍṭarr) — desperate, broken, with no one else to turn to.
          • He removes harm (yakshifu as-sū’) when none else can.
        • This verse highlights Allah’s nearness, His mercy, and His direct response to sincere du‘ā.
      • Relevant Hadiths That Reflect This Verse
        • "There is no Muslim who calls upon Allah... except He will give it."
          • The Prophet ﷺ said: “There is no Muslim who calls upon Allah with a supplication in which there is no sin or severing of family ties, except that Allah will give him one of three: either He will answer his du‘a immediately, or He will save it for him in the Hereafter, or He will divert some evil from him because of it.” (Musnad Ahmad, Sahih)
          • Connection to the Verse: Allah always responds — not always in the way we imagine, but in the way we most need, especially in distress.
        • "Know that Allah does not answer the du‘a from a distracted heart."
          • The Prophet ﷺ said: “Call upon Allah while being certain of a response. And know that Allah does not respond to the supplication that comes from a heedless and inattentive heart.” (Tirmidhi, Hasan)
          • Connection: Surah An-Naml 62 emphasizes sincere, desperate calling — “when he calls out to Him”. The more broken and focused the heart, the closer the response.
        • "Three whose du‘a is never rejected..."
          • The Prophet ﷺ said: “Three prayers are never rejected: the du‘a of the oppressed, the du‘a of the traveler, and the du‘a of the parent for his child.” (Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood)
          • Connection: Distress (iḍṭirār) can be physical (oppression, travel), emotional, or spiritual — and Allah’s response is guaranteed for such du‘ā.
Spiritual Insights from the Qur’an and Hadith
      • Du‘ā in Desperation is Powerful: When all else is stripped away, and you cry to Allah with a heart full of dependence, it unlocks divine mercy.
      • Allah Loves When You Turn to Him Alone: The verse in Surah An-Naml calls you to abandon reliance on creation and run to the Creator.
      • His Help May Not Look Like What You Expect: The hadith shows that Allah’s response can come in different forms:
        • Immediate help
        • Hidden benefit
        • Averted harm
        • Reward in the next life
      • Desperation Is Not Weakness — It’s a Door to Divine Strength; When the world lets you down, Allah is drawing you nearer to Him.
      Final Reflection:
“The louder your heart cries in du‘ā, the nearer the Help of Allah comes — because He is the One who answers the distressed when they call.”

Let us focus on the presence of Allah, though not viisble, but His presence is felt if we have faith in His presence and firm belief that none other than He can be our deliverer, redresser of our grievances and provider of relief from our pains and state of anuguish.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎)  help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. Who is He

Beleiving in something that is unseen has always been contested by many since ages. Although a large number of prophets came to enlighten these, yet there always existed a doubt about the presence of the Divine being. While the earlier generations had no access toscience and natural discoveries, even the people of the men of the science age are found hesitant to acknowledge the existance of any Divine being whaich made the  entire universe and is managing it flawlessly since time immemorial.

There are many a argument by some people who replace belief in God with belief in:
        • Science
        • Human capability
        • Empirical evidence
        • They say: “If it can’t be measured, tested, or proven, it’s not real.”
Sometimes, belief in God feels inconvenient:
        • It requires submission, humility, and moral accountability: Since man by nature is greedy and does not want to be dominated or subdued, and wishes no one to take stock his acts of morality, thus the shirk to acknowledge the presence of a Divine Being, lest they have to live a life of submission.
        • People want to live on their terms — not under divine guidance: let their lives by guided and governed by the Divne Being. If we look around, men are always on the look out if they are not being watched, and if yes, the break all barriers, spped their cars beyond limits and laugh for not being caught. A one hour power shut down in New York city saw one of the worst rowdism and people broke into stores and shops and looted what came in their hands. This shows that man doe not want to be guided by the rules and want to live their own lives on their own terms. And if this just a worldy example, how could they accept living by the guidelines and commandments of a unseen Divine Being.
        • So rejecting that invisble Divine Being becomes easier than surrendering to Him.
For such people, The Qur’an asks: “Have hearts with which they do not understand, eyes with which they do not see, and ears with which they do not hear…”  (Qur’an 7:179)

This isn’t a judgment of intelligence — it means the soul has become veiled. Repeated sin, arrogance, or neglect can lead to spiritual numbness.

In Islam, disbelief isn't just a logical error — it's a spiritual disconnection. The Qur’an:
        • Acknowledges that people will differ in belief
        • Invites them through reason, mercy, and reflection
        • Warn against arrogance and heedlessness
Although, many disbeleivers of a supreme Divine Being know in their hearts of its presence, yet their arrogance compels them to pronounce it publically. When Abraha Al-Ashram, the Christian viceroy of Yemen (then ruled by the Abyssinians), mounted a fierce attack on Makkah with the aid of elephants, a beast unknown to people of Makkah, the elders of polythetists looked up to sky and begged for their protection. Even today, Hindus know there is a Divinine Deity they call Bhagwan, yet their pride in their thousands year old faith does not allow them to acknowledge it.

It can thus be said that people don’t believe in a Divine Being for many reasons — some intellectual, some emotional, some societal. But belief in a Divine Being isn’t just about proving something; it’s about being open to the truth, humbling the ego, and being willing to see with both the mind and the heart.

With this premise, we begin a series of posts based on verses from Qur'an in which that invisible and unseen Divine Being, we call Allah and others call him God, asks questions from those who do not beleive in Him and tells them to ponder over His replies not with a mathematical approach where 2+2 is always 4 or any scientific theory.

Herein under are some of the questions Allah asks those doubtful minds and then answers them Himself so that sanity prevails and they finally believe in the presence of a Divine Being without who the world could not have been there at all or could not have been running smoothly in a celestial movement of a universe that contains trillions of planets revolving around their core stars:
        • Who is He Who heeds the prayers of the distressed when he calls out to Him
        • Who is it that has created the heavens and the earth and sent down for you water from the sky and then We caused to grow therewith orchards full of beauty whose trees you could never grow.
        • Who is it Who has made the earth a place of resort, and has caused rivers to flow in its midst, and has placed upon it firm mountains, and has placed a barrier between two masses of water?
        • Who is it Who guides you through the darkness on land and sea? And Who sends winds as heralds of good tidings ahead of His Mercy?
        • Who is it Who creates in the first instance and then repeats it? Who is it Who provides you with sustenance from the heavens and the earth?
        • And then man is asked: Who is better: Allah or the false gods that they associate with Him as His partners?
In time we will keep adding the detailed Divine replies to the questions posed above and add more too for calrity of thought about the Divine Being many are not willing to beleive in.

How to live a life in the "presence" of Allah - Scholar's viewpoint

Man is always mindful of being watched when working in an office and avoids any action due to which he may be caught by his superiors and prosecuted afor He is oft forgiving ang and disciplined. This happens becasue we are afraid of immediate acction that may be taken against us, even to the extent of being fired. If that be so, why most of us do not live a life as if we are in the presence of our Lord and every action ofours is minuetly watched Divinely?

May be we fear our Lord less than our employer for as against the swift and harsh action by our employer, Allah provides a leverage for He is oft forgiving and merciful. But the provision of this Divine leverage can be retracted at any time without a warning or a show casue notice, the consequences of which may very bitter to swallow.  Remember, when you have no longer patiance with someone, think about how patient is Allah with you.

SOwhy not live am life as we are in the presence of Allah and let nothing be done or said which may result into wrath of Allah. Let us dwell on how to live a life in the presenceof Allah. At the end of this post, we share a eye opener lecture by Javed Ahmed Ghamidi, an eminent Muslim scholar of present times that will elaborate our question more scholarly.

Living a life in the presence of Allah (في حضرة الله) means living with deep awareness that Allah is always near — seeing, hearing, knowing, and caring for everything you do. This is not just a concept, but a way of being. It’s the foundation of taqwā (God-consciousness) and ihsān (spiritual excellence) in Islam.

Here’s how to begin living that kind of life:

          1. Internalize That Allah Is Always With You:  This the first step as has been mentioned in the Qur'an:
          • The Qur’an says:
            • “He is with you wherever you are.” (Qur’an 57:4)
            • “We are closer to him than his jugular vein.” (Qur’an 50:16)
          • This awareness—called muraqabah (spiritual watchfulness)—makes you mindful of:
            • What you say
            • What you think
            • What you intend
            • How you treat others
          • It’s not about fear alone, but about presence.
          2. Establish Regular, Meaningful Salah:  Salah is not just ritual; it is an intimate meeting with Allah.
          • Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been reported as saying "The closest a servant is to his Lord is while in sujood." (Sahih Muslim)
          • Tips for ensuring regularity in one's Salah:
            • Pray on time
            • Reflect on the meanings of what you recite
            • Before salah, say: "I am standing before the King of kings." If this understanding is induced in one's conscious, the true meaning of Salah will start to unfold and a spiritual awakening will set in with a feelingas if  one is standing in from of his Lord.
Remember Allah Constantly (Dhikr): Remembering Allah by taking His attributes and reflecting on the meaning of each and trying to practically demonstrate and incorportate these in our character, for what we expect from Allah, we should demonstrate it in our character for others. How can we do it:
          • Fill your day with remembrance — not just on your tongue, but in your heart.
          • "Remember Me and I will remember you." (Qur’an 2:152)
          • Daily dhikr ideas:
            • After prayer: SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar
            • Morning/evening adhkar
            • Saying "Bismillah" before actions
            • Whispering du‘a from your heart throughout the day

          4. Read the Qur’an As If Allah Is Speaking to You: The Qur’an isn’t just a book to be read—it’s Allah’s speech to you personally. Many are of the opinion that when when reads the Qur'an with understanding, a spiritual feelings sets in as if Allah is speaking to the reader.
          • Therefore, when you read Qur'an, ask: “What is Allah telling me here?”
          • Let reading Qur'an shape your:
            • Choices
            • Relationships
            • Reactions to hardship and ease
          5. Talk to Allah in Du‘a — Constantly: Du'a / supplication is the best things one should do to rember Allah both in good and bad times. In fact, we should not reserve du‘a for hardship, rahter make it a habit to talk to Allah like you would to someone always near.
          • The Prophet ﷺ said: "Let one of you ask his Lord for everything he needs—even a shoelace." (Tirmidhi)
          • This builds your reliance on Allah — a key part of living in His presence.
For ease of our readers, we have published two reference pages which contain links to supplications / du'a mentioned in Qur'an and hadiths of Prophet ﷺ. These selected supplications give very well wordded supplications and suggested by Allah and His Prophet ﷺ. Links given herein under:
          6. Purify Your Heart: A heart attached to the world will struggle to feel Allah's nearness. How to purify one's heart which is otherwise tainted due to Satanic ingresses and influences. Herein under are some tips:
          • Avoid arrogance, envy, anger
          • Cultivate humility, contentment, gratitude
          • Ask Allah for a qalb salīm (pure heart)
Remeber what Allah mentions in Qur'an (26:88–89): “The Day when neither wealth nor children will benefit, except one who comes to Allah with a sound heart.”

Please read our post: How to cleanse our tainted hearts - Tazkiyah al-Nafs (تَزْكِيَةُ النَّفْس) and listen to one of the most eminent female Muslim scholars of present times, Dr. Haifaa Younis how she deliberates on our efforts to cleanse our hearts and make it spacious for remembrance of Allah.

          7. Treat Others As Allah Would Want You To: This is very important. When we want Allah to be merciful and helpful to us, let us also extend our helping hand to those in need of help and to ease their sufferings. Seeing others as Allah’s creation helps you:
          • Forgive more easily
          • Avoid pride or contempt
          • Serve and uplift people for Allah’s sake
          • “Have mercy on those on the earth, and the One above the heavens will have mercy on you.” (Tirmidhi)
          8. Practice Ihsān
          • The Prophet ﷺ defined ihsān as: "To worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, then know that He sees you." (Hadith Jibril, Sahih Muslim). This is the essence of living in the presence of Allah.
          • Serving others Sincerity, humility
          • Purifying the heart Openness to divine light
          Final Reflection:
The more you live in the presence of Allah, the less you'll need the validation of people. The less you'll fear the future. And the more your soul will feel peace — because it's near the One it was created for.

Let us then, our brothers and sisters, transform our life as we are living in presence of our Creator. When this feeling sets into our hearts, all evil thoughts and actions will be replaced with peaceful thoughts and an attitude to help others rather than torturing and harming them.

Let us now share an incredible explanation to the question we have posed by Javed Ahmed Ghamidi, an eminent Muslim scholar of our time. Please watch the video:

About Javed Ahmad GhamidiJaved Ahmad Ghamidi, (born 7 April 1952). is a Pakistani Islamic scholar and philosopher who is the founder of Al-Mawrid Institute of Islamic Sciences and its sister organisation Danish Sara. He is regarded as one of the most influential and popular philosophers of the modern era.

Let us listen to this video again and again and really understand how Allah wants us to be His servants and how we should always be looking towards him, and no one else, for our worldly needs. If we can really Ingrid the meaning of this verse into ourselves, we will never go astray or be misled by worldly desires or following the priests and imams or asking from the dead saints.

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is our duty to convey only to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Be it known that Allah would torment those who torment people in the world

Cruelty is imbeded in the history of the mankind. It started from petty matters like possessing a woman and then kiiling any rival laying siilar claims. The example of Able and Cane is a point in case. Cruelty has also been used as a tool of wileding power and subduing one's opponents. such people enjoy cruelty because it gives them a sense of power. Inflicting pain can create a feeling of dominance, especially for those who feel powerless in other parts of life. Kings have been killing their ooponents in jam packed arenas of bygone days with people yelling at the top of their voice to see meak and weak being killed and ripped apart by Kings' soldiers and sometimes even by wild animals. The dungeons under the mighty castles house humans in extreme inhuman conditions for it amuses the demagogue kings.

But this has never been Divinely liked and man has been cautioned to be kind and to one's opponents or even to the criminalsby not subjecting them to torture and inhuman tratment. In fact the sruel in the corridors of power are sternly warned to be ready for the Divine torment in the life of the hereafter.

There is a hadith attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as mentioned in Sahi Muslim (Hadith 6658) on the subject as mentioned herein under:

Hisham reported on the authority of his father that Hisham b. Hakim b. Hizam happened to pass by people, the farmers of Syria, who had been made to stand in the sun. He said: What is the matter with them? They said: They have been detained for Jizya. Thereupon Hisham said: I bear testimony to the fact that I heard Allah's Messenger ( ‌صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم ‌ ) as saying: Allah would torment those who torment people in the world.

While the brutalities of kings and their cronies continues unabated, even in most democratic countries, cruelty to the opponents of the sitting governments continues, with many a Muslim countries being no exception. The opponetns and the voice makers are not only tortured mentally but the worst kind of physical torture. And this also extends to their families as a tool to force them to force their loved ones to give in and bow their heads in subjugation.

The torture on the behest of the masters would not absolve the lower ranks of the crime of torture and will share the torment of Allah as has been promised in the above cited Hadith. This hadith offers a strong ethical warning against cruelty and injustice, even when it occurs under legal or governmental authority.

Let us take inferences from Qur'an and see how inhuman treatment, vengence, torture and cruelty has been forbidden:

Justice and Mercy are Core Principles
The Qur’an consistently emphasizes justice (‘adl) and mercy (rahma). Mistreating people — even if they are in the wrong — violates these principles.

          • Qur'an 16:90:  "Indeed, Allah commands justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression..."

          • The punishment described in the hadith — forcing people to stand in the sun — is an example of oppression or unnecessary suffering.

Accountability for Tyranny and Cruelty: Cruelty to others brings divine punishment — this is a major Qur’anic theme.
          • Qur’an 42:42: "The blame is only against those who wrong people and tyrannize upon the earth without right. Those will have a painful punishment."
          • The hadith directly aligns with this ayah: those who "torment people in the world" will be "tormented by Allah."
          Prophetic Mercy and Conduct
          • Qur’an 21:107: "And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds."
          • The Prophet ﷺ was a model of mercy — even in times of war or governance.
          • The hadith reflects that — punishing someone harshly for not paying Jizya goes against that Prophetic example.
           Lessons and Applications
          • Abuse of Power is Forbidden: Whether it's a ruler, employer, or anyone in authority, Islam forbids using power to mistreat others.
          • Cruel Punishments Are Un-Islamic: Leaving people to suffer in the sun or using physical torment as punishment contradicts the Prophet’s teachings.
          • Rights of the ordinary irrespective of their religion: Islam mandates fair and humane treatment of all citizens, including non-Muslims living under Islamic governance.
Moral takeaway: Islam doesn’t just forbid wrongdoing; it warns of divine punishment for those who torment others, even under the pretext of law. Despite clear Qur'anic commadments, many a Muslim countries and their leaders still indulge in inhuman treatment of their opponents and subject to the limitless torture to break them to accept their hegomony. Do such leaders think that they will be absolved of their crimes on the Day of Judgement? Let us ponder over it.
Beware! You are being watched

Man has always wanted to live a boundless life and is on the lookout of opportunities when he can do whatever he feels like doing - unobserved and unhindered. But if he is allowed to do so, there will be utter chaos and it will be difficuilt to harness the outburst of innate himan desire to be free. And whenever controlls are applied, a "sense" of discipline seems to set in. Let us quote here two examples:
          • The speed cameras on highways if placed without any notification, drivers tend to overspeed. But whenever a cautionary board is placced or drivers know of presence of a speed camera, suddenly brakes are applied tolower the speed within given speed limit. It is the fear of being watched and caught that induce displine in people.
          • Let us g o a step further. Let two young boy and girl be left in a room alone with a caustion htat a camera is placed to monitor their every movement and conversation, which could be used for public viewing. Rest assured even after 24 hours of "solitary confinement" none of the two would try crossing any limits of decency, both physical or verbal. Suppose there was no camera installed or they were not notified of presence of camera, one can very conveniently conclude what would transpire between the two. This means the fear of being watched makes us cautious of our acts and forbids us fro crossing prescribed limits.
With this premise in view, let us turn to our day to day life where many of us hoodwink others, tell lies, make ingresses of decency and rob others of what is rightfully due to them.

Take a turn from here to a spiritual explanation of self discpline. Allah, our Creator, has created this universe to thrive under set rules of discipline. And has made everything to obey His orders and directives. While the celestial movements are centrally controlled and all living beings other than humans are prgrammed to work under a Divine network, man has been given a leverage to do what he wants: Good or bad but with a caution of being divinely watched.

Since the Divine camera is invisible, many a man elect to break the barriers and cross limits. Although, man has been cautioned through all  Divinne Sccriptures that every movement and act of theirs is being watcched and recored, many do not seem to pay a heed to such cautions for immediate hauling up in Divine Justice is deliberately being pended, yet recordded to be presented in adossier to be handed over to everyone on the Day of Judgement.

As already mentioned, the Divine recording is invisible, man doesnt pay any heed to being caught one day right here in this world or in the life of the hereafter. Atheists since do not beleive in Divine presence, for them being watched or otherwise does not matter for them the concept of right or wrong doesnt matter for they fear not any camera recording their acts. Even many many others, Divine watching does not scare. And it is for this reason we find people robbing rights of others, hurting and robbine to have an upper edge over whosoever they can instill their fear and subdue.

Many a Muslim too fall in this category, unfortunately. Many of us usurp others rights, tell lies even when under oath taken on the Qur'an, hurt and kill fellow Muslim brthern, backbite and create uhurdles lest others progress ahead of them. This is happening despite clear instructions in the Qur'an which tell us that Allah is All Seeing and Hearing - Al-`Alim (العليم) - The All-Knowing and Ash-Shahid (الشهيد) - The Witness to every deed of ours.  He has also assigned two angels over every man (and woman) who are constantly recording all our activities round the clock. This is the same recording like a speed camera or a spy camera placed around us - though with a difference. While the spy and speed cameras could malfunction or stop working, the Divine Eye has never blinked even for a fraction of second since the creation of the universe and even beyond the time when this universe will be no more. For Allah has been there since time immemorial to the limitless time in futre.

So my brothers and sisters, beware of the Divine Eye for its recording will decide our ultimate future in the life of the hereafter: Whether we will be provided an abode in the Heavens or thrown into the fathomless bit of molten fire and boiling water. Time is running fast - so let us trun to Qur'ana dn Sunnah to mend our ways now, lest it is too late to make amends. Remember, Allah is oft forgiving (Al-Ghafur (الغفور) - The Forgiving, The Pardoner) and extremely merciful (Ar Rahim (الرحيم) - The Most Merciful ) to those who repent their sins, seek Divine forgiveness and live a life on a path shown to us by many messengers and prophets sent by Allah.
