Allah's justice ultimately transcends human injustice (selected verses from Al Qur'an)

The Divine religions always attract immense resistance for accepting Allah's sovereignty means recognizing that even a king is accountable to a higher moral law. Acceptance of faith of One True God by the oppressed and those in bondage means weakening of their power as their subjects and slave now possess a faith that is far stronger than mere power of their masters. If someone derives power from being treated as the highest authority—whether a ruler, priest, or social elite—this message limits that power.

The Quran portrays a similar mindset quoting Pharaoh as saying: "I do not know of any god for you other than myself." And he then persecuted even his trusted magicians when they saw the Divine power in front of the whole of Egypt when their snakes were eaten up by the spell produced by stick of Prophet Musa (Moses).

Here it would be appropriate to mention an anecdote mentioned in Surah 85. Al-Burūj of Al Qur'an which tells us of persecution of almost everyone whop had accepted the Divine faith. The place associated with Al-Ukhdūd (الأخدود)—often referred to today as Al-Ukhdood Archaeological Site—holds significance because it is traditionally linked to one of the Quran's most moving accounts of steadfast faith under persecution. Here a people is mentioned who did not have any personal animosity with their people, but it was detaching from the main stream on account of accepting the Divine faith, leaving faith of their forefathers.

The Verse
The 8th verse of the 85th Surah of Al Qur'an, Surah Al-Burūj (The Constellations), reads:

وَمَا نَقَمُوا مِنْهُمْ إِلَّا أَنْ يُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ الْعَزِيزِ الْحَمِيدِ
"And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy."

This is one of the Quran's most powerful statements about persecution for faith.

Context of the verse
Surah Al-Buruj begins by describing a tragic event known as the People of the Ditch (Aṣḥāb al-Ukhdūd). Verses 85:4–10 describe believers who were persecuted and burned alive because they refused to renounce their faith.

85:4: "Cursed were the companions of the trench..."
85:5–7: They sat watching as believers were thrown into the fire.
85:8: The Quran reveals the only "crime" of these believers.
85:9–10: Allah reminds readers that He has complete knowledge and ultimate authority over all things, and warns the persecutors of accountability.

What does verse 8 literally mean?
The verse says: "They had no grievance against them except that they believed in Allah." This is a striking expression. The persecutors could not point to theft, violence, or wrongdoing. The believers' only "offense" was their faith in Allah. The verse exposes the irrationality of religious persecution. It shows that sometimes people are opposed not because they have done wrong, but because their beliefs challenge existing power, prejudice, or injustice.

Historical background
Many classical commentators connect these verses with the persecution of Christians in Najran by the Jewish ruler Dhu Nuwas in the 6th century CE. According to this understanding, many believers were killed because they refused to abandon their faith.

Why is Najran associated with it? Many classical Muslim scholars and historians connected these verses with an event that took place in Najran around the early 6th century CE. According to this traditional account, the ruler Dhu Nuwas persecuted Christians in Najran, who refused to renounce their faith were killed in trenches of fire. The event later became well known in Arabian history.

What does "Al-Ukhdūd" mean? The Arabic word الأُخْدُود (al-ukhdūd) literally means a trench, a ditch, or a deep groove dug into the ground. The Quran describes trenches filled with blazing fire into which believers were thrown because they refused to abandon their faith (85:4–10). Archaeological remains at the modern Al-Ukhdood site have made this association plausible, but the Quran itself does not explicitly identify the location.

It has been documented that Dhu Nuwas burned 20,000 Christians alive in a burning trench because they refused to convert to Judaism (Wikipedia)

In Surah Al-Buruj, Allah says: "Cursed were the companions of the trench." (85:4). That is when the criminal act of the ruler Dhu Nuwas went too far, the wrath of Allah fell on to them and the entire city was thrown upside down, killing those who persecuted their very own people for accepting a new faith.

Ibn Kathir explains that the disbelieving king of Yemen (Dhu Nuwas) or similar tyrannical rulers constructed massive, blazing trenches. They threw the believing men, women, and children into the fire because they refused to renounce their monotheistic faith. The verse highlights that the believers were not guilty of any crime or rebellion; their only "fault" in the eyes of the tyrants was their sincere belief in Allah.

Ibn Kathir notes that these incidents of tyrannical rulers throwing believers into trenches of fire occurred multiple times in history. Through these trials, Allah honors the steadfastness of the faithful. The ultimate lesson from this verse is that the worldly disbelievers may persecute the righteous for their faith, but Allah remains fully aware, encompasses the oppressors, and provides an eternal reward for the steadfast believers.

By ending the verse with "Al-Aziz" (The Almighty) and "Al-Hamid" (The Praiseworthy), Ibn Kathir and other commentators emphasize a divine contrast: Al-Aziz: Allah is the Supreme and All-Mighty. Even though the believers suffered a horrific physical death in the fires, Allah possesses ultimate power over the tyrants and will exact divine justice. Al-Hamid: Allah is the One truly worthy of all praise. The believers who chose the blazing fire over abandoning their faith understood that Allah's love and pleasure are worth every earthly sacrifice.

Why is this place significant in the Quran? The significance is not primarily geographical. Unlike places such as: Kaaba, Jerusalem, or Mecca, Al-Ukhdūd is not presented as a sacred place to visit. Instead, it symbolizes:

1. Faith under persecution The believers accepted death rather than abandoning their belief in Allah.

2. The abuse of power The persecutors sat watching while innocent people were burned. The Quran highlights not only the violence but also the cruelty and indifference of those who watched it happen.

3. Allah's justice
  • Although the oppressors seemed victorious, Allah reminds us: "Indeed, your Lord is severe in assault. Indeed, it is He who originates creation and repeats it." (85:12–13).
  • It is to be remembered that Earthly power is temporary - but Divine justice is ultimate.
4. The value of sincere belief
  • Verse 85:8 says: "They had no grievance against them except that they believed in Allah."
  • This means faith itself became the reason for persecution.
  • The Quran honors those believers by preserving their story forever.
What should we reflect upon today?
Al-Ukhdūd represents something much larger than one historical tragedy. It reminds us that throughout history:
  • Truth has often carried a cost,
  • Oppression can appear powerful,
  • Innocent people may suffer,
  • But injustice never escapes Allah's knowledge.
It also challenges believers to ask:
  • Would I remain true to my principles under pressure?
  • Do I defend the rights of people who are persecuted for their beliefs?
  • Do I use my own influence with justice rather than oppression?
  • A profound lesson
One of the most striking features of the story is that the Quran never tells us the names of the believers. History may forget the names of the oppressed. But Allah does not.

Their identities are unknown to us, yet their sacrifice is remembered in the Quran and recited by millions around the world. This conveys a powerful message: in the Quranic worldview, what gives a person lasting honor is not fame or status, but sincerity, steadfastness, and faithfulness to Allah. Their names may have faded from history, but their example endures as a reminder that integrity before Allah is never lost, even if it is overlooked by the world.

While many people today enjoy freedom of religion, others still experience discrimination or persecution because of their beliefs. The verse reminds believers to stand against injustice and to uphold the dignity of every person's right to practice their faith.

It also speaks to more subtle forms of pressure:
  • Being mocked for religious commitment,
  • Feeling pressured to compromise one's ethical principles,
  • Facing exclusion because of sincerely held beliefs.
Thus the above quoted verse:
  • Encourages steadfastness without responding with oppression in return. At the same time, its message is not limited to Muslims. It affirms a broader moral principle: no one should be harmed simply because of their sincere religious belief.
  • Reminds believers that truth is not measured by popularity or power. The persecuted believers appeared weak in the eyes of the world, yet the Quran honors them, while those who held worldly power are condemned.
For contemporary readers, Quran 85:8 is a call to remain faithful to one's principles, to reject persecution and coercion in matters of belief, and to trust that Allah's justice ultimately transcends human injustice. It encourages moral courage, compassion for those who suffer because of their convictions, and respect for the freedom of conscience that the Quran consistently upholds.

Muslims' Faith under Persecution
As of today or from the day 1 of formal invitation to Islam, we see a repetition of same events as mentioned above. Muslims from day one have been persecuted, hated and seen with indifference for following a new faith as did the people mentioned above. Since those days kings and rulers were generally unanswerable, they threw the Christians into pits of fire so that Christianity should not flourish - but it did. Likewise, Muslims are being persecuted in one form or the other and are generally sidelined, attacked and mocked even today. Instead of burning Muslims alive, copies of Al Qur'an are torched as a sign of hatred against Islam. In India, Muslims are facing the worst kind of treachery and are beaten, forced to drink urine of the cow by the Hindus. Their places of worship are attacked, even destroyed. Yet despite every move with heinous intentions against Islam, Islam continues to flourish and is now the second most accepted religion after Christianity. Many an analyst fear that by 2050, Islam may become the leading religion of the world.

This is an eye opener. Despite all hurdles, Islam is expanding everyday for it is the ultimate truth and by and by non Muslims have started to find Divine wisdom and truth and reverting to Islam.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs and selected verses of Al-Qurʾān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. In that the exegesis of the chapters of the Quran is mainly based on the "Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an" by one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi.
In addition, other sources which have been explored and views of other scholars have been incorporated while explaining meaning of a verse. Allah Does not remove every obstacle - He gives inner strength to overcome them (Al Qur'an)

There have been billions of people living on this earth for whom extra ordinary means of exitance and sustenance have been Divinely provided - irrespective of the fact they believe in their Creator or not. However, there have been special people whom Allah loves and bestows upon them His countless blessings, both physically and spiritually. These are the blessed ones who have always kept the worship and love of their Creator above every other worldly delights and provisions.

These blessed ones are mentioned at various places in Al Qur'an. For examples some are Divinely gifted with spiritual receptivity "Sharḥ al-Ṣadr" - that is they may not be physically better than others in means of wealth, status and power - but they are the ones whose hearts have been opened for spiritual receptivity.

Today, we share another verse which is one of the most hopeful and spiritually profound verses in the Qur'an. At first glance, it appears to be a promise made specifically to the Prophet ﷺ, but its principles illuminate the path of every believer. The is the 8th verse of Surah 87 Aʿlā (The Most High). Although the verse contains only three words, its meaning is remarkably deep.

    The Verse
    Arabic: وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ
Translation: "And We will facilitate for you the Way of Ease."
(Other translations: "We shall make easy for you the easiest way," or "We shall ease you toward ease.")

    The Context
The opening verses of Surah Al-Aʿlā reassure the Prophet ﷺ as revelation was being sent down:
    • Glorify your Lord (87:1)
    • Allah created and perfected everything (87:2–5)
    • We shall make you recite so you will not forget (87:6–7)
Then comes the promise: "And We will facilitate for you the Way of Ease." (87:8)

The Prophet ﷺ was about to shoulder the greatest responsibility ever entrusted to a human being—conveying Allah's final revelation to humanity. Allah promised not only to preserve the Qur'an in his heart but also to make him fit for that mission.

This verse is furthermore a statement of the nature of Islam, its role in human life and in the universe. This verse, which is rendered in Arabic in no more than two words, states one of the most fundamental principles of faith and existence. It provides a link between the nature of the Prophet and the nature of Islam on the one hand and the nature of the whole universe on the other. It is a universe created by God with ease; it follows its appointed way with ease and draws nearer its final objective with ease. Thus it is an inspiration lighting limitless horizons.

If God smooths a certain person’s path, he finds ease in everything in his life. For he will move along his way to God with the universe, which is characterized by its harmony of construction, movement and direction. Hence he does not clash with those who digress, for these are of no importance, compared with the vast universe. Ease will pervade his whole life. It will be evident in his hand, tongue, movement, work, concepts, way of thinking and in the way he conducts all affairs and tackles all matters. Ease will be the  main feature of how he carries himself and how he deals with others as well.

Let us focus on the key word of this verse and see how it should be applied to our lives.

    What is "al-yusrā" (اليُسْرَى)?
The key word is al-yusrā, from the root y-s-r, meaning:
    • Ease,
    • Facility,
    • Smoothness,
    • What is right and manageable.
Classical exegetes such as Al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, and Al-Qurtubi explain that al-yusrā includes:
    • The easy and upright path of Islam,
    • Righteous deeds,
    • Wise and gentle calling to Allah,
    • Success in fulfilling one's mission,
    • Ultimately, the path that leads to Paradise.
Ibn Khatir explains the promise of Allah: `We will make good deeds and statements easy for you, and We will legislate such Law for you that is easy, tolerant, straight and just, with no crookedness, difficulty or hardship in it.'

So Allah is not merely saying: "Life will become easy." Rather, He is saying: "I will make you able to walk the path that leads to My pleasure."

That is a much deeper promise. Ease does not mean a life without hardship. This is crucial.

The Prophet ﷺ still endured persecution, boycott, hunger, the loss of loved ones, battles, and even physical injury.

So the question arises what became "easy"? For apparently he enduring miserable mistreatment at the hands of the polytheists and idol worshippers of Makkah.

The plain answer is His heart was made peaceful. It provided him the clarity of purpose, steadfastness and his ability to obey Allah despite difficulties. Although Allah did not remove every obstacle. He gave His Messenger ﷺ the inner strength to overcome them.

    The deeper meaning
The verse teaches a profound spiritual principle:
    • When Allah chooses someone for a righteous purpose, He also equips them to fulfill it.
    • Allah does not merely command—He enables.
    • He does not only guide externally—He transforms internally.
    • He opens the heart, strengthens resolve, and makes obedience increasingly natural.
This is closely connected to Sharḥ al-Ṣadr (expansion of the heart) discussed in Qur'an. We have explained this exclusive blessing in one of our earlier posts: Who are the blessed ones Divinely gifted with spiritual receptivity "Sharḥ al-Ṣadr."

    How does Allah "facilitate" someone?
Allah's facilitation (taysīr) often happens in subtle ways:

    1. He opens the heart to truth Acts of worship that once felt burdensome become beloved.

    2. He places love of righteousness in the heart A believer begins to enjoy prayer, charity, Qur'an, and service to others.

    3. He gives wisdom Decisions become clearer because one's priorities are shaped by revelation.

    4. He provides opportunities Allah brings into a person's life:
    • Beneficial teachers,
    • Righteous companions,
    • Moments of guidance,
    • Doors of goodness.
    5. He grants perseverance Difficulties remain, but despair does not dominate the heart.

Does this promise apply to us?
Although this verse is a specific promise was to the Prophet ﷺ. However, the principle applies to every believer. The Qur'an repeatedly teaches that Allah facilitates goodness for those who sincerely seek Him.

For example: "As for the one who gives, is mindful of Allah, and believes in the best reward, We will ease him toward ease." — Qur'an

Notice the pattern: You take the first step - Allah makes the path easier.

Similarly, the Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever follows a path seeking knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise." Ease here is not the absence of effort; it is Allah's assistance in reaching a noble goal.

How do we adopt the essence of this verse?
This verse invites us to seek not an easy life, but Allah's facilitation.

    1. Ask Allah for taysīr before every important task The Prophet ﷺ regularly made supplications asking Allah for ease. A beautiful example is: "O Allah, nothing is easy except what You make easy, and You can make hardship easy if You will." That is Recognize that true ease comes from Him.

    2. Pursue what pleases Allah Allah promises facilitation for righteousness, not for every desire. If our goal is to please Him, we can hope for His help.

    3. Begin with small acts of obedience Often, people wait until worship feels easy before they start. The Qur'an teaches the opposite: start sincerely, and Allah gradually opens the way.

    4. Don't confuse ease with comfort A path may involve sacrifice yet still be "easy" in the Qur'anic sense because Allah grants peace, conviction, and endurance. Many righteous people have endured great hardship while experiencing remarkable serenity.

    5. Pray for an open heart This verse pairs beautifully with the supplication of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him): "My Lord, expand for me my breast, make my task easy for me..." — Qur'an

    Notice the sequence:
An expanded heart, then ease in fulfilling the mission - A beautiful connection

This verse also complements: "Indeed, with hardship comes ease." — Qur'an

Together, these passages teach that Allah's promise of ease is not the removal of every trial. Rather, it is His gift of guidance, resilience, and inner peace so that hardship does not prevent a believer from fulfilling their purpose.

    Reflection
The deepest message of Surah Al-Aʿlā 87:8 is this: Do not ask Allah merely for an easy life; ask Him to make you the kind of person for whom obedience, sincerity, patience, and righteousness become easy.

That is the "Way of Ease"—a heart so aligned with Allah that even when the road is difficult, walking toward Him becomes the most natural and peaceful direction. This is the ease that sustained the Prophet ﷺ throughout every trial, and it is an ease every believer should seek through faith, repentance, remembrance of Allah, and steadfast commitment to His guidance.

Can a faithful child Disobey his parents?

Parents in Islam assume a very exclusive and elevated status in Islam. Both parents, specially the mothers, are to be respected and never to be disobeyed, for it is the mother who carries her offspring for nine months in her womb and endures extreme discomfort during these nine months and undergoes extreme pain during the childbirth. She then feeds her offspring and raise her with her best love and care to a standing youth. The father too works hard and undergoes extreme hardships to make arrangements for the raising of his offspring at the cost of his discomfort and extreme body limits.

It is for this reason of bearing a child, raising him and educating him to be a good Muslim and valuable human being, that Allah has sent down many a instruction for being kind to one's parents. Likewise Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has on many a occasion directed his companions to be kind and respectful to their parents.

*We have already written a number of posts on the subject which can be accessed from links  given below:
While so much is said about respect, kindness and obeying of one's parents, can their be an eventuality whereby a child could disobey his parents? This is a difficult question, but Allah gives out the answer to this question in the 8th verse of Surah 29 Al Ankabut being shared today:

We have conjoined man to do good to his parents, but if they force you to associate with Me another (deity) whom you do not know (as such), you should not obey them." You have all to return to Me: then I shall tell you what you had been doing

Shirk, associating an deity with Allah or labelling someone as His son or His associate, is one of the biggest and unforgettable crime in the eyes of our Creator, the sole and unchallenged Master of the universe. He alone has created the entire universe, living creatures including man, and innumerous means of sustenance for everything that lives above and below the earth. Therefore, if someone adds any deity to His Lordship, He is utterly annoyed and displeased. Those who do so will be specially dealt with on the day of the Judgements and will be unpardonable no matter how good otherwise they have been in their earthly life.

Let us examine this verse in detail as explained by some of the eminent scholars and exegetes of Qur'an:

    Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi:

According to Muslim, Tirmidhi, Ahmad, Abu Da'ud and Nasa`i, this verse was Sent down in respect of Hadrat Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas. He was 18 or 19 years old when he embraced Islam. When his mother, Hamnah, daughter of Sufyan bin Umayyah (neice of Abu Sufyan), came to know that her son had become a Muslim, she said, "I will neither eat nor drink nor sit in shade unless you disown Muhammad. The rights of the mother are supermost even according to Allah's Command. Therefore if you disobey me, you will be disobeying Allah too." Hadrat Sa'd was perplexed and came before the Holy Prophet and told his whole story. At this, this verse was revealed. Possibly other young men who embraced Islam in the initial stage at Makkah were also confronted with similar situations. Therefore, the same theme has been repeated forcefully in Surah Luqman: 15 also.

What the verse means to impress is this: The rights of the parents, among the creation of Allah, are to be held as the supreme, but even if the parents force a person to adopt shirk, they should not be obeyed. The words, "If both of them force you to associate..." imply that a lesser pressure, or a pressure by either of them, deserves to be set aside much more promptly. The next sentence, ".... whom you do not know (as such)," is also noteworthy. This gives a sound reason for not obeying the parents in this regard. The parents certainly have the right that the children should serve them, respect them, and obey them in lawful things. But they do not have the right that one should obey them blindly against one's knowledge of the reality. Therefore, there is no reason why a person should go on following his parents' religion just because it is their religion. If the children come to know that their parents are following a false religion, they should give it up and adopt the right religion. and should not follow the wrong way whose falsehood has become clear to them even if the parents use every kind of pressure for it. When this is so in the case of even the parents, it should be so with every other person, too. No one deserves to be followed and obeyed unless one is sure that the person being followed is on the right path.

"You have all to return to Me: then I shall tell you what you had been doing": That is, "The relationships of the world and their obligations are confined to the world. At last, the parents as well as the children have to return to their Creator, and before Him everybody will be held answerable only on the basis of his personal responsibility. If the parents have misled the children, they will be called to account . If the children have accepted deviation for the sake of the parents, they will be punished. And if the children adopted the right way, and showed no slackness in rendering the parents' lawful rights either, but the parents ill-treated them only for the reason that they did not join them in their deviation, they will not be able to escape Allah's punishment."

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: The Command to be Good and Dutiful to Parents
Allah commands His servants to be dutiful to parents, after urging them to adhere to belief in His Tawhid, because a person's parents are the cause of his existence. So he must treat them with the utmost kindness and respect, his father for spending on him and his mother because of her compassion for him.

Allah says: (And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them, but address them in terms of honor. And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: "My Lord! Bestow on them Your mercy as they did bring me up when I was young.") (17:23-24)

Although Allah orders us to show kindness, mercy and respect towards them in return for their previous kindness, He says: (but if they strive to make associate with Me, which you have no knowledge of, then obey them not.) meaning, if they are idolaters, and they try to make you follow them in their religion, then beware of them, and do not obey them in that, for you will be brought back to Me on the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will reward you for your kindness towards them and your patience in adhering to your religion. It is Allah Who will gather you with the group of the righteous, not with the group of your parents, even though you were the closest of people to them in the world. For a person will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection with those whom he loves, meaning, religious love.

Allah says: (And for those who believe and do righteous good deeds, surely, We shall make them enter with the righteous.) In his Tafsir of this Ayah, At-Tirmidhi recorded that Sa'd said: "Four Ayat were revealed concerning me – and he told his story. He said: "Umm Sa'd said: 'Did Allah not command you to honor your parents? By Allah, I will not eat or drink anything until I die or you renounce Islam.' When they wanted to feed her, they would force her mouth open.

Then this Ayah was revealed: (And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful to his parents; but if they strive to make you associate with Me, of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not.)" This Hadith was also recorded by Imam Ahmad, Muslim, Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i. At-Tirmidhi said, "Hasan Sahih.

    Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
"[None has a greater right than God.] We have directed human beings to treat their parents with kindness but [at the same time clarified that] if they force you to associate someone with Me of which you have no knowledge": This an argument in favour of refutation of polytheism. Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī writes:

The word علم here means “argument” and “proof.” As far as one God is concerned, it is an obvious reality that even a polytheist acknowledges. As far as His associates are concerned, it is the responsibility of those who regard them to be His associates to present a proof of this. In the absence of any such proof, it is not permissible for any reasonable person to become their servant by regarding them to be God’s partners. (Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 6, 19)

"Then do not obey them": Among the trials mentioned earlier, a big trial was that at times parents forced their children to obey them in matters of religion. Those who accepted the call of Muḥammad (sws) must have faced this trial as well. Thus the Qur’ān has made it evident that though the right of parents is an obvious fact, God has not granted them the right that they be obeyed in matters of religion without any reasoning or they compel their children in matters of religion.

    Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
The sūrah then refers to a type of test which we have already mentioned: that of ties and bonds with family and loved ones. It gives clear and decisive guidance in such a difficult situation. Parents are the closest of all relatives. They give much to their children. Hence, to be kind to one’s parents is a duty required of everyone. Indeed parents must be treated with love, respect, and care. Yet when it comes to one’s duty towards God, they cannot be obeyed in opposition to Him. The paramount bond is that with God. Hence, if one’s parents are unbelievers, they should be treated with care and kindness, but must not be obeyed or followed. Once this present life is over, all return to God.

So my dear sisters and brothers in Islam, despite the status of parents in Islam and the respect and obedience due to them, Oneness of Allah cannot be denied and anything tangent to this reality is not to be accepted at all. If parents pressurize their children for not accepting Islam, they can be disobeyed as per the Divine Directive above. However, even after entering the fold of Islam, one should never abandon one's parents and continue to respect them and be kind to them.

Remember, as mentioned in Qur'an, even Prophet Ibraheem (Abraham, peace be upon him) was admonished for praying in favour of his father who was a polytheist and refused to enter fold of Islam and continued to worship the idols. Likewise, when Prophet Nuh (Noah, peace be upon him) was onboard his ship, his arrogant son refused to come onboard and was drowning in the flood. Prophet Nuh wanted to save his son despite his disobedience to enter into the fold of Islam and was let to drown. So much is the punishment of not accepting Oneness of Allah.

And it is heartening to note that more and more non-Muslims, specially Christians, are entering the fold of Islam in huge number all over the world. The false concept of Trinity is finally crumbling and new reverts are finding message of Qur'an more logical than man made concept of the 4th century. In many cases, parents which were hostile to reversion of their offspring to Islam, later too reverted to Islam when they felt the strong ambiance of Divine faith from their offspring.

Please read the revert experiences of some of the reverts as given in our reference page: Entering the fold of Islam - The revert experiences.

We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Death from which you flee will certainly overtake you

Of all the words in vocabularies, the most feared word is Death. No one, even suffering from any serious ailment, hopes to die. But whether one likes or not, death befalls on any living being that is created. Wikipedia describes death as an inevitable process that eventually occurs in all organisms. It is an irreversible cessation of all biological functions that sustain an organism. For organisms with a brain, death can also be defined as the irreversible cessation of functioning of the whole brain, including the brainstem, and brain death is sometimes used as a legal definition of death. The remains of a former organism normally begin to decompose shortly after death. As of 2022, a total of 109 billion humans have died, or roughly 93.8% of all humans to ever live.

Man can attain any age, yet his final call comes despite his urge to live another day. Even some of prophets who lived for many centuries, too have to taste the death. Methusaleh, an Arab prophet sent to the people of Thamud who lived in an area known as Al-Hijr between Hijaz and Tabuk. He was grandfather of Noah (عليه السلام) and son of Enoch (idrees عليه السلام). He is said to have lived at an age of 969, making him the longest living person in the Bible.

No matter where a man could be, he will be taken to his place of death beyond his imagination. The recent death of five adventurous men who paid millions of dollars to go as deep as to the bed of the sea in a small sub called Titan, something like 3500 meters or may be more, to see the wreckage of the ill-fated ship Titanic. They never knew that their death is calling them in that desolate place under the seabed and they were paying for it.

At many a place in Qur'an, there is mention of death and man has been warned that he will be resurrected at an appointed time to answer for his actions, good or bad, which he took during his worldly life. We have already shared tow verse about death in our previous posts, shared herein under:
Today, we share another verse from Qur'an, the eighth verse of Surah 62. Al-Jumu'ah warning men of the impending death which can strike anytime, even the next second from hence. The purpose of sharing death related posts in not to scare away our readers, but to caution them of its imminence so that we pay attention to our deeds and if we are following our evil desires and the path of the Satan, time is now to repent what have we done and seek forgiveness from Allah before time for seeking forgiveness from Allah runs out.

(62:8) Tell them: “The death from which you flee will certainly overtake you. Then you will be returned to Him Who fully knows what is hidden and what is manifest. Thereupon He will let you know all that you used to do.”

At another place (Surah 2. Al Baqarah, verse 96) it is said: And you will surely find them the greediest of people for life – [even] more than those who associate others with Allah. One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And Allah is Seeing of what they do.

    Yusuf Ali Explanation
Before Allah's Judgment-Seat, when Judgment is established, we shall see the full inwardness of all deeds in this world. The veil of illusion and delusion will be torn off. All our secret motives will be laid bare. The results of all our little plots and plans and their reactions on our eternal welfare will be clearly visible to us. All make-believe will disappear.

    Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
A statement follows that establishes the nature of death and what comes after it. It shows them that their attempts to escape from death are of little use. It will inevitably overtake them. After death, all will return to God where they will have their deeds reckoned and where they will face the consequences of the same.

So, my brothers and sisters in Islam, be ready for the inevitable that may knock at your door any time from hence. Make arrangements for the Day when you will be presented in front of Allah and asked to explain your actions in worldly life, especially the evil ones. Repent now and seek forgiveness from Allah of your bad / misdeeds, for this opportunity will never come again.
Successful are those who are true to their trusts and covenants

In our ongoing series of posts on "Traits of believers who attain success" as spelt out in the initial nine verses of Surah 23. Al-Muminun الۡمُؤۡمِنُوۡنَۙ (The Believers), we share today the 8th verse which is about one of the outstanding traits of a believer. This is about being true to one's trusts and covenants. In fact, whatever a true believer says and exhibits is the display of his character, honesty and truthfulness. Once a covenant has been agreed upon, a true believer never goes back to his undertakings.

    وَالَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ لِاَمٰنٰتِهِمۡ وَعَهۡدِهِمۡ رَاعُوۡنَ ۙ‏
(23:8) who are true to their trusts and their covenants,
The Believers fulfill the terms of the trusts which are placed in their charge. In this connection it should be noted that the Arabic word amanat is very comprehensive and includes all those trusts which are placed in their charge by Allah or society or individuals. Likewise, `ahd includes all those compacts, pledges, and promises which are made between Allah and man, and man and man.

The Holy Prophet himself used to impress the importance of the fulfillment of pledges in his addresses: "The one, who does not fulfil the terms of his trust, has no Faith, and the one, who does not keep promises and pledges has no Islam. " (Baihaqi) According to a Tradition reported both by Bukhari and Muslim, he said: Four characteristics are such that if a person has all the four in him, he is beyond any doubt a hypocrite, and the one who has one of these, is a hypocrite to that extent till he gives it up:
    • when something is placed in his trust, he commits breach of the trust,
    • when he speaks, he tells a lie,
    • when he makes a promise, he breaks it, and
    • when he has a quarrel with somebody, he exceeds all limits (of decency and morality)"
    Yusuf Ali Explanation
Trusts may be express or implied. Express trusts are those where property is entrusted or duties are assigned by someone to some other whom he trusts, to carry out either immediately or in specified contingencies, such as death. Implied trusts arise out of power, or position, or opportunity; e.g., a king holds his kingdom on trust from Allah for his subjects. The subject of covenants, express and implied, has been discussed in the very first verse of Surah 5. Al-Maida, wherein it is said:

Believers! Honour your bonds! (This line has been justly admired for its terseness and comprehensiveness. Obligations: 'uqud the Arabic word implies so many things that a whole chapter of Commentary can be written on it. First, there are the divine obligations that arise from our spiritual nature and our relation to Allah. He created us and implanted in us the faculty of knowledge and foresight: besides the intuition and reason which He gave us. He made Nature responsive to our needs, and His Signs in Nature are so many lessons to us in our own inner life; He further sent Messengers and Teachers, for the guidance of our conduct in individual, social, and public life. All these gifts create corresponding obligations which we must fulfil. But in our own human and material life we undertake mutual obligations express and implied. We make a promise: we enter into a commercial or social contract; we enter into a contract of marriage: we must faithfully fulfil all obligations in all these relationships. Our group or our State enters into a treaty; every individual in that group or State is bound to see that as far as lies in his power, such obligations are faithfully discharged. There are tacit obligations; living in civil society, we must respect its tacit conventions unless they are morally wrong, and in that case, we must get out of such society. There are tacit obligations in the characters of host and guest, wayfarer of companion, employer or employed, etc., etc., which every man of Faith must discharge conscientiously. The man who deserts those who need him and goes to pray in a desert is a coward who disregards his obligations. All these obligations are interconnected. Truth and fidelity are parts of religion in all relations of life. This verse is numbered separately from the succeeding verses.)

    Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
This is a very comprehensive expression for all moral directives in religion.

Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī writes: اَمٰنٰت  refers to all trusts which our Lord has blessed us with in the form of strengths, abilities, obligations and responsibilities or in the shape of favours, blessings, riches and offspring. Also included in them are things people have been entrusted with or those discharging, which is our responsibility according to the norms. In a similar way, also included in it are the covenants and promises our Lord has taken from our nature in the unseen world or taken in this world in the form of the sharī‘ah through His messengers. Moreover, it also comprises all those promises and covenants which we made with God through our nature or through His prophets. Similarly, it also consists of promises made with a group or an individual in this world, whether they are written or oral or are thought to be understood in a civilized society even if they are not made orally or in writing. It is stated by the Almighty that it is these servants of His who abide by all these trusts and promises. They are neither dishonest and rebellious in the matter of their Lord nor are ones who are unfaithful to His creatures or go back on their word with them. (Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 5, 299)

    Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:
That is, They (Believers), individuals and community alike, honour their pledges and discharge their trust. Both the individual and the community have many types of trust to maintain, the first of which is the trust encapsulated in their own nature, i.e. they are created by God in an upright fashion so as to be in harmony with the rest of the universe to which they belong. This testifies to God’s oneness by the natural feeling of unity that governs the universe. Believers are faithful to this great trust, and they protect their nature from deviation so that it continues to testify to God’s oneness. Other trusts are derived from this basic element.

The first pledge is that God has taken from, and made ingrained in human nature, committing it to believe in His existence and His oneness. All other pledges, covenants and treaties derive from this first one. When a believer commits himself to something, he makes God his witness. Honouring his commitments is, to a believer, part of being God-fearing, of taqwā.

The Muslim community is also responsible for honouring its public trust, and for the fulfilment of its pledges to God and the duties that result from these pledges. The sūrah gives its statement in very general terms so as to include every type of trust and pledge. Believers are faithful to all these, at all times. Being faithful is part of their character. No community can hope to have a straightforward life unless pledges and trusts are fulfilled, so that every individual and group are certain of this basic rule of community life. It is a rule that gives everyone a sense of trust and security.

Remember, my brothers and sisters in Islam, that covenants create obligations, and express and implied trusts and covenants taken together cover the whole field of obligations. So, whenever you make a covenant or undertake a bond with someone or when someone entrusts you with someone and you undertake to keep it in your safe custody, then do not turn your back on your covenant or bonds for a true beleiver is not expected to do so.  Verily, successful are those who are true to their trusts and covenants
