Importance of Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah (The Friday Congregational Prayer)

Last Friday, we shared a post on the desirables before the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah ( صَلَاة ٱلْجُمُعَة, ), the Friday prayer or Congregational prayer. Now in this post we are sharing a video in which eminent Muslim scholar and preacher Dr Israr Ahmed (may Allah bless him) dwell on the attendance of the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah.

But before we share the video, let us a recap of the 9th verse of Surah 62. Al-Jumuah which states the importance of this obligatory prayer for all Muslims over the world::
( 9 )   O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.

Now having known the desirables for this specific day, we now turn to the prayer itself and know are exempted from this prayer and who are not excused from it and that they must attend the prayer, with some exceptions.

The Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah is mandatory for all adult Muslim men. Those exempted from the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah include:
  • Slaves, whose masters do not allow them to attend the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah (This may also include people employed on jobs wherein company policies do not allow them time out)
  • Women, though they are free to join the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah if adequate arrangements for them exist
  • Children
  • Sick who are unable to go to the masjid
Now over to eminent Muslim scholar Dr Israr Ahmed (may Allah be pleased with him) elaborating the obligation of attending the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah:
Disclaimer: The views expressed in the video above are that of the concerned scholar . We have shared these view as added information in better understanding of Islam. The reader may or may not agree with the view owing to their own perception.  If someone has more material about the subject, he/she is most welcome to share in the comments box to make the post all encompassing.

If Allah afflicts you with any hardship, none other than He can remove it

Firm and true faith is the hallmark of Islam. We as Muslims must have an unflinching faith in Allah and must know that every good or bad that happens to us or we are under trials and retribution, it all is a form of test from Allah. Those who pass the test will be the ones who will be elevated to the highest plains of Jannatul Firdous.

We may recall the story of Prophet Yunus (may Allah be pleased with him) when he erred and was then when swallowed by the big fish repented and Allah eased his sufferings. His mere swallowing up by the big fish and still being alive in its belly was an affliction caused to him by Allah so that he realizes his mistake and then it was Allah Who eased his hardship and have him delivered alive ashore.

This situation is an eye opener to all of us who upon being in a bad situation move their worldly gods rather than invoking the mercifulness of Allah to deliver them of their hardships and bad days. We have selected the 107th verse of Surah 10. Yunus which points towards this important aspect in which Allah assures the believers that all bad or good is from Allah and if He so wills none can change or improve our situation.

Note: In the end of the verse below, two attributes of Allah Al-Ghafur (الغفور) - The Forgiving, The Pardoner and Ar Rahim (الرحيم) -The Most Merciful have been used. Please click the highlighted text to read more about these two attributes of Allah.

(10:107) If Allah afflicts you with any hardship, none other than He can remove it; and if He wills any good for you, none can avert His bounty. He bestows good upon whomsoever of His servants He wills. He is All Forgiving, All-Merciful.'

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
This verse contains the explanation that good, evil, benefit and harm only come from Allah alone and no one shares with His power over these things. Therefore, He is the One Who deserves to be worshipped alone, without ascription of partners.

Concerning His statement, ( وَهُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ And He is the Pardoning, the Merciful.) This means that He is forgiving and merciful towards those who turn to Him in repentance, regardless of what sin the person has committed. Even if the person associated a partner with Allah, verily Allah would forgive him if he repented from it.

Yusuf Ali  Explanation
Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Even when we suffer under trials and tribulations, it is for our good, and no one can remove them except He, when, in His Plan, He sees it to be best for all concerned. On the other hand, there is no power that can intercept His blessings and favours, and His bounty flows freely when we are worthy, and often when we are not worthy of it.

Qur'an Wiki:
God has set certain laws in operation whereby harm and benefit inevitably affect human beings when they expose themselves to their causes. So if harm afflicts you through the operation of God’s laws, then no one can remove that harm unless you follow the right course of action. This means that you should cease to expose yourself to the causes of harm if you are aware of them or appeal to God to make them known to you if you do not know them. Similarly, if you follow His laws which generate benefit for you, no one will be able to stop that benefit. It will always be granted by God to those of His servants who decide to follow the means to achieve it. This is His general will and modus operandi.
Furthermore, He forgives past sins when one sincerely repents. Furthermore, He is merciful to His servants, forgiving them their errors and increasing their reward for their good deeds when they adhere to the true path.

Believers, let not your possessions and offspring make you negligent of Allah's remembrance

Allah has created man and blessed him with a family and many worldly possessions so that he lives happily and hearty. But if a man becomes so engrossed in his family life that he forgets to remember and thank Allah for it is only He Who have blessed him with all comforts of life, then he surely is among the losers not only in this world but in the hereafter too. This theme has been repeated at many a places in the Qur'an to remind man of his duties towards Allah and in thanking Allah.

Today we have chosen the 9th verse / ayat of the Surah 63. Al Munafiqoon (The Hypocrites) in our series of posts on Selected Verses from Qur'an, which clearly conveys Allah's admonition to the man lest his forgetfulness of Allah makes him to lose :

يٰۤاَيُّهَا الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا لَا تُلۡهِكُمۡ اَمۡوَالُكُمۡ وَلَاۤ اَوۡلَادُكُمۡ عَنۡ ذِكۡرِ اللّٰهِۚ وَمَنۡ يَّفۡعَلۡ ذٰلِكَ فَاُولٰٓـئِكَ هُمُ الۡخٰسِرُوۡنَ‏
(63:9) Believers, let your possessions / riches and your offspring not make you negligent of Allah's remembrance. For whoso does that, they will be the losers.
Here a word of admonition is being addressed to all those people, who have entered Islam, whether they are true and sincere believers, or those who profess the faith merely verbally. The words   " الَّذِيۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا  "alladhina amanu in the Qur'an are sometimes used to address the true believers and sometimes to address the hypocrites, for they profess the faith only with the tongue, and sometimes to address the Muslims of all kinds in general The context itself shows which group is the audience at a particular place.

The mention of the possessions and the children, in particular, has been made, for man mostly turns away from the demands of the faith for the sake of their well-being and interests and becomes involved in hypocrisy, weakness of faith, or wickedness and disobedience; otherwise it implies everything of the world that allures and absorbs man so completely that he becomes heedless of the remembrance of God. This heedlessness in respect of the remembrance of God is indeed the root cause of all evil. If man only remembers that he is not free but the servant of One God, and that God is fully aware of all his actions and deeds, and he will by held accountable one day before Him for all his actions and deeds, he would never be involved in any deviation and wickedness, and if ever he commits an error due to a human weakness, he will immediately rectify it as soon as he comes to realize his wrongdoing and repent.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
Allah the Exalted orders His faithful servants to remember Him frequently and to refrain from being distracted from His remembrance by indulging in their properties and children excessively. Allah informs them that those who engage in this life, its delights and attributes and were busied from the obedience and remembrance of Allah, for which they were created, will be among the losers. They will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. Allah encourages the believers to spend in His cause,

Yusuf Ali  Explanation
Riches and human resources of all kinds are but fleeting sources of enjoyment. They should not turn away the good man from his devotion to Allah. "Remembrance of Allah" includes every act of service and goodness, every kind thought and kind deed, for this is the service and sacrifice which Allah requires of us. If we fail in this, the loss is our own, not any one else's: for it stunts our own spiritual growth.

Qur'an Wiki:
Money and children can preoccupy a person making him oblivious to everything else, that is, unless his heart alerts him to the aim of his existence, making him feel that he has a superior goal.

God has given him riches and offspring so as to fulfil his task of building human life on earth, but not so that he is so fully preoccupied with them that they distract him from remembering God and from being in contact with the source of his humanity. Those that are so distracted "will surely be the losers." The first thing they lose is their human identity, which is dependent on maintaining the bond with the source of man's humanity. Whoever loses himself has lost everything, regardless of the size of his wealth and the number of his offspring.

A Wish too late - when Hell is brought near that Day

A man, whether believer or non believer or a plain atheist know from the heart of his heart that one day everything has to come to an end and thereafter all will be assembled to hand over their rewards and otherwise based on their performance in this world. This will be a very hard day, specially for those who will be empty handed.

That is how a picture is painted in the 23rd verse of Surah 89. Al Fajr (The Dawn):
"and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be?(89:23)
That is on that Day man will remember whatever he had done in the world and will regret, but what will remembrance and regretting avail him then. A Day when man will take heed and accept admonition: he will realize that whatever he had been told by the Prophets was true and he committed a folly when he did not listen to them; but what will taking heed and accepting the admonition and realizing one’s errors avail then.

And then he would realize what has he done to him in his life and lament:

يَقُوۡلُ يٰلَيۡتَنِىۡ قَدَّمۡتُ لِحَـيَاتِىۚ‏
(89:24) He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!”
Explaining the meaning of the verse, eminent Muslim scholar and exegete Ibn-Kathir notes that if he was a disobedient person, he will be sorry for the acts of disobedience he committed. If he was an obedient person, he will wish that he performed more acts of obedience. This is similar to what Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal recorded from Muhammad bin Abi `Amirah, who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah . He said, "If a servant fell down on his face (in prostration) from the day that he was born until the day he died as an old man, in obedience to Allah, he would scorn this act on the Day of Judgement. He would wish to be returned to this life so that he could earn more reward and compensation.'':

So my dear brothers and sisters, whether you are a Muslim, non Muslim or even an atheist, know that well that this life is nothing but a testing ground to prepare yourselves for a an eternal life that awaits you. So before your life clock stops clicking, which may even be the next second, do things for which you shall be rewarded with a pleasurable life in the Paradise and not a life of hell which one cannot even imagine how painful it would be.

We have to make the choice now: Bear the hardships of this world for a good reward in the Hereafter or live  a life of lewdness, sin and joy and then face the blazing fire of hell forever !!

Difference between Believing and Submitting to Allah

Today we share a very important verse from Qur'an which is about believing in Allah or submitting to Allah. Although this verse was revealed specifically to some Bedouin tribes of the time of advent of Islam, yet it is as relevant today for many Muslims and we must understand the implications by understanding the Qur'an better.

This verse is the 14th verse of Surah 49. Al Hujaraat (The Private Apartments) given herein under:

(49:14) The Bedouins say: “We believe.”(O Prophet), say to them: “You do not believe; you should rather say: 'We have submitted'”;31 for belief has not yet entered your hearts. If you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not diminish anything from the reward of any of your deeds. Surely Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Compassionate.
This does not imply all the desert Arabs but only a few particular groups of the Bedouins who had become Muslims, seeing the increasing power of Islam, thinking that they would not only remain safe from any attack by the Muslims but would also gain materially from the Islamic conquests. These people had not embraced Islam sincerely but had professed faith only verbally in order to be counted among the Muslims, and their this inner state became exposed whenever they would come before the Holy Prophet with different sorts of demands and would enumerate and mention their rights as if they had done him a great favor by accepting Islam. Traditions mention several of such tribal groups, e.g. Muzainah, Juhainah, Aslam, Ashja', Ghifar, etc. About the Bani Asad bin Khuzaimah in particular, Ibn 'Abbas and Said bin Jubair have stated that once during a drought they came to Madinah and making a demand for financial help they said to the Holy Prophet again and again: "We became Muslims without any conflict: we did not fight against you as have such and such other tribes fought." By this they clearly meant to point out that their refraining from fighting against the Messenger of Allah and their accepting Islam was a favour for which they must be rewarded by the Messenger and the Muslims. It was this same attitude and conduct of the Bedouin group living around Madinah, which has been commented upon in these verses. One can understand this appraisal better if one reads it together with vv. 90-110 of At-Taubah and vv. 11-17 of AI-Fat-h.

Another translation of the words qulu aslamna can be; "Say: we have become Muslims. " From these words some people have concluded that in the language of the Qur'an, "Mu 'min" and "Muslim" are two opposite terms. A "Mu'min" is he who has believed sincerely and a "Muslim" he who might have accepted Islam only verbally without true faith. But, in fact, this is an absolutely wrong idea. No doubt the word iman here has been used for sincere affirmation by the heart and the word Islam for only outward and external submission but to understand them as two independent and mutually contradictory terms of the Qur'an is not correct. A study of the Qur'anic verses in which the words Islam and Muslim have been used, shows that in the Qur'anic terminology "Islam " is the name of the the Faith, which Allah has sent down for mankind; it comprehends the faith and obedience both, and a ¦MuslIm " is he who believes with a sincere heart and obeys the Commands practically. This is borne out by the following verses:

"Indeed, Islam is the only right way of life in the sight of Allah." (Al 'Imran: 19)

"And whoever adopts any other than this way of submission (Islam), that way shall not be accepted from him," (Al-'Imran: 85)

And I have approved Islam as the way of life for you." (Al-Ma'idah: 3)

`Whomever Allah wills to guide aright, He makes his breast wide open to Islam." (Al-An'am: 125)

Obviously, in these verses Islam " does not imply obedience without the Faith. Here are some other verses:

'Say (O Prophet): I have been enjoined to be the first one to affirm (faith in) Islam. "(AI-An'am: 14) '

"If they have surrendered (to Islam), they are rightly guided." (AI-'Imran: 20)

All the Prophets, who were Muslims, judged the cases according to the Torah." (AI-Ma'idah: 44)

Here, and at scores of other places, acceptance of Islam cannot mean adopting obedience without the faith. Likewise, here are a few verses in which the word "Muslim" has occurred signifying the meaning in which it has been used repeatedly in the Qur'an:
"O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should truly be feared and see that you do not die save as true Muslim. " (AI-`Imran: 102)
`Allah had called you "Muslims" before this and has called you (by the same name) in this Qur'an, too." (AI-Hajj: 78)
"Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was a Muslim, sound in the faith." (AI-i-'Imran: 67)
`And remember that when Abraham and Ishmael were raising the walls of this House, they prayed: ... Lord, make us Thy Muslims and also raise from our offspring a community which should be Muslim. " (AI-Baqarah: 128)
(The Prophet Jacob's will for his children:) "O my children, Allah has chosen the same way of life for you Hence remain Muslims up to your last breath. (AI-Baqarah: 132)
After a study of these verses who can say that in these the word "Muslim" implies a person who does not believe sincerely but has accepted Islam only outwardly? Therefore, to make the claim that in the Qur'anic terminology "Islam" implies obedience without the faith and the "Muslim" in the language of the Qur'an is he who accepts Islam only outwardly is absolutely wrong. Likewise, this claim also is wrong that the words iman and mu'min have been used in the Qur'an necessarily in the sense of believing sincerely. No doubt, at most places these words have occurred to express the same meaning, but there are many places where these words have also been used for outward affirmation of the faith, and all those who might have entered the Muslim Community with verbal profession have been addressed with. "O you who have believed", no matter whether they arc the true believers, or people with a weak faith, or mere hypocrites. For a few instances of this, see Al-i-`Imran: 156, An-Nisa' :13t5, AI-Ma'idah: 54, Al-Anfal: 20-27, At-Taubah: 38, Al-Hadid: 28, As-Saff: 2.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
There is a Difference between a Believer and a Muslim - Allah chastises the bedouins who, when they embraced Islam, claimed for themselves the grade of faithful believers. However, Faith had not yet firmly entered their hearts,
This honorable Ayah provides proof that Faith is a higher grade than Islam, according to the scholars of the Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama`ah. This is also demonstrated in the Hadith of Jibril, peace be upon him, when he questioned the Prophet about Islam, then Iman then Ihsan. Thus moving the general matter to one more specific, then even more specific.
Imam Ahmad recorded that `Amir bin Sa`d bin Abi Waqqas said, "The Messenger of Allah gave (something to) some men and did not give one of them. Sa`d said, `O Allah's Messenger, you gave to so-and-so and so-and-so. However, you gave nothing to so-and-so, even though he is a believer.'
The Prophet said, (I might give some men and give nothing to others, even though the latter are dearer to me than the former. I do not give them things for fear that they might be thrown on their faces in the Fire.)'' This Hadith is recorded in the Two Sahihs. Therefore, the Prophet made a distinction between the grade of believer and the grade of Muslim, indicating that Iman is a more exclusive grade than Islam. I mentioned this subject in detail supported by evidence, in the beginning of the explanation of the chapter on Iman in Sahih Al-Bukhari, all praise is due to Allah and all the favors are from Him. So this proves that the Bedouins whom the Ayah mentioned were not hypocrites, rather they were Muslims in whose hearts Faith was not yet firmly established. They claimed a higher grade for themselves than the grade that they earned, and they were taught a lesson as a consequence.
This meaning agrees with the meaning given by Ibn `Abbas, Ibrahim An-Nakha`i, Qatadah and that preferred by Ibn Jarir. These bedouins were taught a lesson, (Say: "You do not believe, but say `We are Muslims,' for Faith has not yet entered your hearts...'') meaning, `you have not yet achieved the reality of Faith.' Allah the Exalted said, (But if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not decrease anything in reward for your deeds...) `He will not decrease any of your rewards,' as Allah said; (We shall not decrease the reward of their deeds in anything.) (52:21) Allah said: (Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.) for those who repent and return to Him.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:
The actual word is: اَسْلَمْنَا. Here it refers to outward obedience. It occurs in the Arabic language in this meaning also. The implication is that it is not befitting for them to lay claim to faith; what they can say is that when they saw that Islam had become a political force, they submitted to its authority. This too is a form of subservience and how can they term it as a favour?
True faith which when enters a person, grasps the mind and heart in such a way that nothing from his thinking and deeds remains unaffected and uninfluenced by it.
Qur'an Wiki:
As the Surah draws to its end, it fittingly explains the truth of faith in reply to those Bedouins who claimed to be believers when they did not even understand the nature of faith. This also serves as a reply to those who tried to press their acceptance of Islam as a favour they thought they did for the Prophet. In essence, they do not appreciate that it is only through God's favour that people believe.

The first of these verses is said to have been revealed in relation to the Bedouins of the Asad tribe who, as soon as they accepted Islam, boasted saying, 'We have attained to faith.' They even counted this as a favour they performed for the Prophet. They said to him: "Messenger of God! We have become Muslims. Other Arabs have fought you, but we have not." God wanted to show them the truth of what was in their hearts when they said this, stating that they only embraced Islam in submission while the truth of faith had not touched their hearts or souls. "Say [to them]: 'Believers you are not. Rather say, "We have submitted ourselves', for true faith has not entered your hearts." (Verse 14)

Nevertheless, God's grace has dictated that they will be rewarded for every good action they do, letting nothing go to waste. Even the outward manifestation of Islam, which has not yet penetrated into people's hearts to become genuine faith, is sufficient to make their good deeds count and be recorded. Thus, their deeds are not wasted like those of unbelievers. No part of their reward is wasted as long as they continue to obey: " If you truly pay heed to God and His Messenger, He will let nothing of your deeds go to waste." (Verse 14) This is because God is quick to grant forgiveness and bestow His mercy. He accepts from His servant the first step and rewards him for submission and obedience while waiting until faith settles in his heart: "God is indeed much-forgiving, merciful." (Verse 14)

Remember Allah Instantly if you sin and implore forgiveness

Allah is cognizant of inherent  the weakness of his servants of being entrapped by evil and get pulled towards sin, lewdness and games and activities that take man away from the remembrance of Allah. Yet Allah Who is Ghafoor (الغفور) - The Forgiving, The Pardoner and Rahim (الرحيم) -  The Most Merciful continues to remind His servants that He is always there to receive their repentance and would certainly forgive them.

The mention of forgiveness and repentance appears at numerous places in Qur'an and we have already shared about a dozens of these verses (please refer to the Forgiveness and Repentance section of our reference page on Selected from Qur'an) so as to continue reminding our brothers and sisters who have mistaken or have fallen into the trap of evil forces to earnestly repent and seek forgiveness of Allah. The 135th verse for Surah 3. Al-i'Imran is yet another verse from Qur'an in which Allah asks His servants to remember Him instantly if they have sinned and implore forgiveness:

(3:135) And those who having done something to be ashamed of or wronged their own souls earnestly bring Allah to mind and ask for forgiveness for their sins and who can forgive sins except Allah? And are never obstinate in persisting knowingly in (the wrong) they have done..

Explaining the meaning of the abovesaid verse, Yousaf Ali defines sin as a sort of oppression of ourselves by ourselves. This follows from the doctrine of personal responsibility, as opposed to that of blind fate or of an angry God or gods lying in wait for revenge or injury on mankind.

And then notes that righteous man, when he finds he has fallen into sin or error, does not whine or despair, but asks for Allah's forgiveness, and his faith gives him hope. If he is sincere, that means that he abandons his wrong conduct and makes amends.

Ibn Kathir adds that  if the servants of Allah commit an error they follow it with repentance and ask forgiveness.

Qur'an Wiki:
Another quality of the God-fearing is highlighted here. They are those who seek forgiveness whenever they slip into sin and make sure of not knowingly disobeying God’s orders. How compassionate this religion is. Before He calls on people to be compassionate to one another, God, limitless is He in His glory, shows them one aspect of His own compassion of which they themselves are the recipients, so that they may learn.

In Islamic terminology, the God-fearing are among the elite of believers. God’s compassion and mercy, however, include among them those who remember God after committing a gross indecency or who wrong themselves and pray to Him for forgiveness of their sins. The term “gross indecency” includes the most ghastly of all sins. This religion of ours, however, is so tolerant that it neither considers those who sink to its depth as outcasts, nor deprives them of God’s mercy. They are not even given the bottom rank among the believers. Rather, they are elevated to the rank of the elite, the God-fearing, on one condition only. That condition is that they should remember God and pray to Him to forgive their sins, that they should not persist with their wrongdoing, knowing that it is sinful, and that they should not unashamedly boast about the sins they have committed. In other words, they should remain within the framework of servitude to God and ultimate submission to Him. By doing so, they remain entitled to His forgiveness, mercy and bounty.

Islam recognizes man’s weakness. Man may always succumb to his physical desires which may bring him down to the depths of gross indecency. His lust, ambitions or temptations may cause him to lose-- control and drive him to disobedience of God. Recognizing this weakness in man, Islam does not adopt harsh punishments, rejecting a sinner altogether and depriving him of God’s mercy when he wrongs himself by committing a gross indecency. In the Islamic view there is something important to add to his credit which is the fact that the light of faith has not been put out altogether in his soul. His heart is not totally hardened, his relationship with God is still alive and he knows that he is merely a servant who slips and makes mistakes, and that he has a Lord who forgives. This weak, sinful creature, then, remains essentially good. He clings to his bond with God and lie does not sever it. He may, then, slip as many times as his weakness imposes on him. Eventually, he will get there, as long as he holds to his bond with God and keeps the light of faith within him. He must always remember God, pray to Him for
forgiveness and acknowledge his submission to Him and refrain from boasting about his sins.

Never does Islam slam the door in the face of a weak sinner leaving him lost in the wilderness. Never does it let him feel permanently rejected, afraid to turn back. On the contrary, it holds for him the prospect of forgiveness. It shows him the way and holds his trembling hand, steadying him and giving him the light he needs to return to his secure refuge. It only requires one thing of him, namely, that his heart and soul are not so hardened so as to make him forget God. As long as he remembers God and keeps alive in his conscience the voice of guidance and maintains in his heart the yearning for God’s grace, then light will shine again in his soul and the seed of faith will burst forth with a new plant.

When your misbehaving son who has run away knows that nothing awaits him at home except flogging, he will never return. But if he knows that there is also a tender hand which will pat his shoulder when he apologizes for his misdeeds and which excuses him when he asks for pardon, he will certainly come back.

Islam knows that side by side with man’s weaknesses and carnal desires there exist strength and sublime aspirations. For this reason, Islam is sympathetic to man in his moment of weakness, places him back on his way to a higher horizon, as long as he remembers God and does not knowingly persist with his wrongdoing. The Prophet says: “He who prays for forgiveness does not persist with his sin, even if he commits it 70 times a day.” (Related by Abū Dāwūd and Al-Tirmidhī.) In doing so, Islam does not advocate complacency, nor does it praise the one who frequently slips or who describes sinful actions as beautiful, as those who call themselves “realists” do. It simply overlooks such errors in order to awaken both hope and a sense of shame within man. Forgiveness by God, the only One to forgive sins, does not lead to complacency; it fills the sinner with shame. Only those who persist and pay no heed remain outcasts. Thus, Islam combines its call to man to aspire to a higher horizon with its mercy and compassion, knowing man’s weakness and capability. It ensures that the door of hope is always open in front of man as it motivates him to exert his utmost in his aspiration towards the sublime.

May Allah help us understand Qur'ān and be always ready to remember Allah if we faulter and instantly invoke His infinite mercy to forgive us. May Allah help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. Aameen.

What is Desirable before the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah (Friday congregational prayer)

Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah ( صَلَاة ٱلْجُمُعَة, ), the Friday prayer or Congregational prayer  is the obligatory prayer for all Muslims around the world to be offered in the masjid (mosque). Its importance has been amply highlighted in the Surah 62 Al Jumuʿah:
( 9 )   O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.
This verse was revealed at a time when salat had been made obligatory, yet people preferred to carryon with their trade for the considered a few pennies more than the prayer itself. The people being negligent in that on hearing the call to the Prayer they would not hasten to it but would remain occupied in their worldly activities and trade and business transactions. Therefore, Allah sent down this verse to make the people realize and appreciate the importance of the call and the Prayer and to exhort them to hasten to perform it as a duty.

* Read exegesis of Al Jumu'ah  (already posted)

Now here are few things that one must keep in mind:
  • The Jumu'ah prayer does not take more than one hour at best, that is taking a bath, wearing appropriate clothes, apply some perfume, and got to the masjid, listen to the Khutba of the prayer leader, offer the prayer in congregation and go home or attend to his business.
  • This means the entire day before the prayer and after the prayer is free for him to continue with his daily chores. This is unlike the Jews sacred day where they restrict them for worship for the entire day and do not do any worldly chores. Thus Muslims should not have an excuse to spare one hour out of the day time for attending the obligation of offering Jumu'ah prayer in congregation in a masjid.
  • Now what about the time before the Jumu'ah prayer? Although, nothing specific has been spelt out but a hadith of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ lays immense stress on certain "desirables" before the Jumu'ah prayer. And these desirables commence from the dawn break till the termination of the Jumu'ah prayer in congregation.
And what are these desirables?

Please listen to the lecture by eminent Muslim scholar Dr Israr Ahmed (may Allah be pleased with him) elaborating the desired things on the Day of Jumuʿah:

Seven Qualities that Allah Loves in a Believer

Entering in the fold of Islam is one thing but then being liked by Allah for our conduct and deeds is yet another ballgame for the real test of believer starts when he takes shahada and pledges and devotes himself fully to the commands of Allah.

In this post today, we are sharing seven qualities of a believer which would take him closer to Allah for Allah loves those who act upon his commandments and stand firm on their faith even under the most trying conditions and circumstances. Please go through the seven qualities given herein under and see whether you are the believer who Allah likes or are you wanting in some to improve upon:

Repentance (Tawbah)
At numerous places, Allah has asked His servants not to grieve if the faulter or sin for the door to repentance is always open and as long as a believer is ashamed of his sins, mistakes or misdoings and realizes he has digressed from the path prescribed for him by Allah and instantly repents, Allah promises to forgive him, as promised in the 222nd verse of Surah 2. Al Baqarah (The Cow):
اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُحِبُّ التَّوَّابِيۡنَ وَيُحِبُّ الۡمُتَطَهِّرِيۡنَ‏
Verily, God loves those who turn unto Him in repentance, and He loves those who keep themselves pure.
So those who transgress from the restrictions placed on believers and repent, there is always good tidings from Allah for their forgiveness.

We have already shared a number of posts on the importance of repentance (read the relevant posts from our reference page Selected verses from Qur'an under the heading Forgiveness/Repentance).

Purity (Taharah)
The above quoted verse is in fact a part of a long verse in which the stress is laid on bodily impurities and instantly purifying these for a believer can remain in state of impurity.  Now we share the complete 222nd verse from Surah 2. Al Baqarah:
(2:222) They ask you about menstruation. Say: “It is a state of impurity; so keep away from women in the state of menstruation, and do not approach them until they are cleansed. And when they are cleansed, then come to them as Allah has commanded you.” Truly, Allah loves those who abstain from evil and keep themselves pure.
The Arabic word "adha" stands both for illness and for uncleanliness. Manses are not only a state of impurity but also of disease. During the monthly period, women are medically nearer a state of illness than of health.

The Qur'an uses indirect and covert hints and suggestions for the expression of such delicate matters. The instructions, "They should be separated" and "Do not go near them", do not mean that the women should be made untouchables during their monthly periods, as they are made by the Jews, the Hindus and some other communities. The Holy Prophet explained that this commandment meant only to prohibit intercourse with them during the menses. All other relations with them may be continued as before.

The above said verse speaks of impurity arising from women's mensuration and state of impurity after sexual intercourse between husband and wife. So man is stopped from approaching his wife in her state of impurity. And when she is free from her days, she has to take a full bath (ghusl) to purify herself. Likewise after their marital coitus, both again have to take full bath (ghusl) to be pure to offer prayers. An unclean and impure believer is not allowed to offer his prayer unless clean. Thus in one verse, Allah has shown to qualities of a believer which he likes: Repentance and Purity "Truly, Allah loves those who abstain from evil and keep themselves pure."

Taqwa (piety)
Taqwa is the hallmark of a true believer. The importance of Taqwa is highlighted at a number of places in the Qur'an. Herein under is the 4th verse of Surah.9 At Tauba (Repentance) that highlights Allah's likeness for those who uphold Taqwa and are pious:
[9:4] In exception to those who associate others with Allah in His Divinity are those with whom you have made treaties and who have not violated their treaties nor have backed up anyone against you. Fulfil your treaties with them till the end of their term. Surely, Allah loves those who have Taqwa."
Here believers are being advised to keep their promises: “So, fulfill to them their treaty.” For your violation in such cases shall be against piety. And Muslims should remain pious under all circumstances “Indeed, Allah loves those who are righteous” only.

Please read our two already posts on Taqwa: What is Taqwa and Who are Men of Taqwa

Ihsan (Goodness and perfection)
A believer cannot be a true believer if by his actions and deeds others around him are uncomfortable or in pain or difficulty. And even if he has been wronged, he controls his anger and restrains himself from taking revenge or hurting others. The same is being said in the 134th verse Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:
(3:134) who spend in the way of Allah both in plenty and hardship, who restrain their anger, and forgive others. Allah loves such good-doers.
The devouring of interest had created greed, avarice, parsimony and selfishness in those who took interest; hatred, anger, enmity and jealousy in those who had to pay it, and these moral evils contributed to some extent to the setback in the Battle of Uhd. Therefore Allah has condemned and prohibited interest and prescribed charity as an antidote to it. It is obvious that Paradise has been reserved for those who practice charity and spend money generously, and not for those greedy persons who practice money-lending on interest.

Tawakkul (Trust in Allah)
The same is being said in the 139th verse Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:
(3:139) Do not, then, either lose heart or grieve: for you shall surely gain the upper hand if you are true men of faith.
Here we would like to share the 40th verse of Surah 9 At Tauba which is an excellent example of having unflinching faith in Allah: "  لَا تَحۡزَنۡ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ مَعَنَا ۚ  Do not grieve. Allah is with us." Read  its details here.

We have already shared a number of posts on the importance of repentance (read the relevant posts from our reference page Selected verses from Qur'an under the heading Faith in Allah ).

Adl (justice)
We have already shared a number of posts on the importance of justice for unless an unbiased and just system of justice prevails in a Muslim society, or even otherwise (read the relevant posts from our reference page Selected verses from Qur'an under the heading Justice) , there is likelihood of rich and influential taking undue advantage and usurping the rights of the poor and weak.  Here in under we share the 5th verse of Surah 42. Ash-Shura:
(5:42) They are listeners of falsehood and greedy devourers of unlawful earnings. If they come to you may either judge between them or turn away from them. And were you to turn away from them they shall not be able to harm you; and were you to judge between them judge with justice. Surely Allah loves the just.
Here pointed reference is made to judges and jurisconsults who accept false evidence and invent reports in order to issue verdicts contrary to justice and in favour of either those who bribe them or with whom their illegitimate interests lie. So judges have a very heavy responsibility on their shoulder and if they are just and give unbiased and just decisions, Allah assures them of His likeness.

Sabr (Patiance)

(3:146) Many were the Prophets on whose side a large number of God-devoted men fought: they neither lost heart for all they had to suffer in the way of Allah nor did they weaken nor did they abase themselves. Allah loves such steadfast ones.
Eminent Muslim scholar Ibn-Kathir is of the opinion that It was said that this Ayah means that many Prophets and their companions were killed in earlier times, as is the view chosen by Ibn Jarir. It was also said that the Ayah means that many Prophets witnessed their companions' death before their eyes. However, Ibn Ishaq mentioned another explanation in his Sirah, saying that this Ayah means, "Many a Prophet was killed, and he had many companions whose resolve did not weaken after their Prophet died, and they did not become feeble in the face of the enemy. What they suffered in Jihad in Allah's cause and for the sake of their religion did not make them lose heart. This is patience, " and Allah loves the patient. ."

Allah also advises His servants to resort to prayer and let go off their sabr (patience) when distress:
وَاسۡتَعِيۡنُوۡا بِالصَّبۡرِ وَالصَّلٰوةِ ؕ وَاِنَّهَا لَكَبِيۡرَةٌ اِلَّا عَلَى الۡخٰشِعِيۡنَۙ‏
"And resort to Patience and As Salat (Prayer) for help.  Truly Prayer is burdensome for all except the devout," (Surah 2 Al Baqarah: 45)

There are three types of patience:
  • Patience in adversity: that one does not complain or feel despair at his situation. Rather he submits to the will of Allah and bears the difficulties and tests with patience. An example of this is the Prophet Ayyub peace be upon him, who was granted health, wealth, and offspring in abundance, then lost it all. Similarly, Ya’qub, who lost his two most beloved sons.
  • Patience in doing what Allah has commanded: patience in establishing the prayer, patience in fasting Ramadan, especially when the days are long, patience in giving zakat, and patience in performing Hajj.
  • Patience in abstaining from all that Allah has prohibited; be it usury, gambling, flesh of swine, alcohol, and other forbidden acts.
In the last verse of Surah 103. Al Asr, the qualities of a believer are spelt out who are not only patient themselves but also advise others to be patient:
 إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ
( 3 )   Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

Having read out these seven qualities, we need to take a reappraisal of ourself and see whether we have these seven qualities in us so that Allah loves you? And if we are lacking some, we need to reshape lives as guided by above seven qualities so that we are loved by Allah and are rewarded profusely and are among the blessed. May Allah help us to be the ones He likes the most. Ameen.
