First Tarawih prayers in Hagia Sophia Masjid, Istanbul-Turkey, after a lapse of 88 years

The night before the first Ramadan 2022 was a rare night in the life of Istanbul, Turkey when the Muslims flocked the famous Hagia Sophia masjid to perform the Tarawih prayer for the first time after a lapse of 88 years.

Hagia Sophia masjid was closed to public after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and was converted into museum in 1934 by the then Turkish president Kemal Ataturk. The venue remained a museum till its status as a masjid was restored in 2020 by the present Turkish president Erdogan. However, the Tarawih prayers was not held for two years and it was Ramadan 2022 that brought the good tidings for the Muslims to perform Ramdan specific Tarawih prayers.

The masjid was jam packed by the believers and was an awe inspiring moment to witness them performing the prayers. Seeing is believing. Watch the video below:
May all masjid around the world remain open to believers and sound of Adhan spreads all around. May Allah help us to follow the commands of Allah contained in the Qur'an and sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for not being a good Muslim but also be a useful member of our society. Aameen

Why Friday (Youm ul Jumuʿah) assumes a special place in Islam

This post is continuation of series of posts on importance of Friday and Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah (The Friday congregational prayer). We have already apprised our readers about the importance of Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah and what are the desirable acts before one proceeds to the masjid to perform the Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah.

Here a query may crop up in the minds of non Muslims as to why Muslims pay lot of emphasis on Ṣalāt al-Jumuʿah or for that matter the Friday it self. To clear any doubt, we share a short video clip by one of the eminent Muslim scholar Abu Bakr Zoud who apprise us as to why Friday assumes a special place in the lives of Muslims.

Before you listen to the lectured video below, we would like to share a hadith (saying of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) reported by Abu Huraira (R.A) “The best day in the days of week is a day of Jumma, in that day Adam was created, in that day he entered in heaven, on Friday he was taken out of heaven”. So Jumma is a special.

Now listen to the complete lecture by Abu Bakr Zoud elaborating the importance of Friday, Youm ul Jumu'ah:
Abu Bakr Zoud is a graduate of the Faculty of Quran from the Islamic University of Madinah, after which he continued his Qur’anic Studies in Egypt. He received numerous ijazaat in Hafs including one from Sh Ali Al-Hudhafy, the Imam of Masjid An-Nabwi. Abu Bakr Zoud specialises in Qir’aat and currently teaches Tafseer at the Islamic College Australia.

How does Fasting in Ramadan Train us to achieve Self Control

The month of Ramadan is just a couple of days away. Lucky will be those who will be fasting in this holy month to please Allah by abstaining from all otherwise Halal things. By abstaining ourselves from all Halal things in fact means that we are conditioning ourself to impose self control over ourselves.

Fasting is called Sawm in Arabic which means to stop or abstain from something. When it applies to believers, it means that one has to abstain oneself from all those things that are otherwise Halal for us.

We have already published a number of posts on Ramadan and fasting during this month (you may consult our reference page: Ramadan: The Month of Fasting and Blessings for our earlier posts). Now let us now listen to a short lecture by eminent Muslim scholar Wahiduddin Khan (1925-2021) on how fasting can infuse self discipline in us.  Wahiduddin Khan was a Islamic scholar and peace activist known for having written a commentary on the Quran and having translated it into contemporary English and talking on issues related to Islam:
May this Ramadan we really understand the virtues of fasting and condition ourselves to infuse self discipline in us not only during the month of Ramadan but for the rest of our lives. ameen

How to welcome and observe the Month of Ramadan (Scholar's Viewpoint)

The month of Ramdan, the holy month of fasting, is just a day away. A month that brings countless bounties of Allah to the Muslims, specially for those who fast during all thirty days of the month, give out charity, recite Qur'an and ask forgiveness from Allah to be blessed and be among those who are rewarded positively.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been quoted as gathering all his companions on the last day of Islamic month of Sha'ban and told them that a month of blessings is just across the corner (that means just a day away) that brings a special gift from Allah to all believers. And he also said that the coming month houses a night which is better than worship of a thousands of months. He was referring to the Laila tul Qadar - a night in which Qur'an was revealed to the believers.

So he ﷺ emphasized that this month of Ramadan should be welcomed wholeheartedly and all able bodied adult Muslims should fast during day and pay special emphasis to their worship, offering prayers and reciting Qur'an for every single act of worship is multiplied umpteen number of times and believers will be rewarded handsomely both in this world and in the life of hereafter.

Today we share an enlightening lecture on how to greet and observe the month of Ramadan by the eminent Musli scholar Dr Israr Ahmed (may Allah be pleased with him). Dr. Israr Ahmad, (1975–2002) was a Pakistani Islamic theologian, philosopher, and Islamic scholar who was followed particularly in South Asia as well as by South Asian Muslims in the Middle East, Western Europe, and North America.

Ramadan: The Month of Fasting and Blessings (Reference Page)

The month of Ramdan assumes a very important place in the hearts of the Muslims for its is the month in which all able bodied adult Muslims, both men and women, are commanded to keep fast during the day. For many reverts, this may be their first Ramadan and I wish them to be lucky to be experiencing their exposure to a month full of blessings and bounties.

Although, Muslims eagerly await this month as it nears, they start hearing the knocking on their heart of the arrival of month of Ramadan in the last of week of Sha'ban. Preparations commence  in these days to prepare households to welcome this holy month. On the last day of Sha'ban, all eyes are fixed on the horizon where sun sets to spot the moon signaling the beginning of the month of Ramadan.

The importance of Ramadan is emphasized in the Qur'an. In Surah 2. Al Baqarah, Verse 185 of the Quran Allah says:

Ramadan is the month in which the Qur'an was sent down : this Book is a perfect guidance for mankind and consists of clear teachings which show the right way and are a criterion of Truth and falsehood. Therefore from now on whoever witnesses it, it is obligatory on him to fast the whole month, but if one be ill or on a journey, he should make up for the same number by fasting on other days. Allah desires to show leniency to you and does not desire to show any hardship. "therefore this method is being shown to you so that you may complete the number of Fast days and glorify Allah for the Guidance He has shown to you and be grateful to Him.

Which two things are a trial for the Believers?

Many non believers or even believers of low faith often argue why there have been test and trials in this world? Why does God make one people happy and others unhappy? Why God could not create happiness for everyone and let everyone live in peace. Why test and trials??

Well the answer is very simple, yet people get into blaming God for every bad thins, yet are never thankful for good things that happen to them. If there were no tests and trials, how would God ascertain who is a better believer and loves Him more than others w=even when in difficult times and passing through hardships of life.

Of the test and trials, love of man for two things stands out: His children and his wealth. One who prefers these two things to love of Allah is the one who reaches the finish line with rewards and blessings of Allah. Those who love these two worldly possessions more than Allah, remain far behind the finish line forever. Let us what are these two worldly possessions and why does Allah caution believers about these:

اِنَّمَاۤ اَمۡوَالُـكُمۡ وَاَوۡلَادُكُمۡ فِتۡنَةٌ ؕ وَاللّٰهُ عِنۡدَهٗۤ اَجۡرٌ عَظِيۡمٌ‏
(64:15) Your possessions and your offspring are nothing but a trial for you. And there awaits a great reward for you with Allah.

(64:16) So hold Allah in awe as much as you can, and listen and obey, and be charitable. This is for your own good. And whoever remains safe from his own greediness, it is such that will prosper.

Your possessions and your offspring are nothing but a trial for you. And there awaits a great reward for you with Allah. ) For explanation, see (E.N. 23 of Surah Al-Anfaal). Here one should also keep in view the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) saying which Tabarani has related on the authority of Abu Malik al-Ashari, saying: Your real enemy is not he whom, if you kill there is success for you, and if he kills you, there is Paradise for you; but your real enemy may be your own child who is born of your own loins, or the wealth of which you are the owner. That is why here as well as in Surah (Al-Anfaal, Ayat 28), Allah says: If you save yourselves from the temptation and allurements of worldly possessions and children and succeed in keeping love of them subject to the love of Allah, there are rich rewards for you with Allah.
Yusuf Ali  Explanation: Children may be a "trial" in many senses: (1) their different ways of looking at things may cause you to reflect, and to turn to the highest things of eternal importance; (2) their relationship with you and with each other may confront you with problems far more complicated than those in separate individual lives, and thus become a test of your own strength of character and sense of responsibility; (3) their conflict with your ideals (see n. 5494 above) may vex your spirit, but may at the same time search out your fidelity to Allah; and (4) their affection for you and your affection for them, may be a source of strength for you if it is pure, just as it may be a danger if it is based on selfish or unworthy motives. So also riches and worldly goods have their advantages as well as dangers.
Muhammad Asad Explanation: : For an explanation of 8:28 , which is almost identical with the present passage - reproduced herein under:
"and know that your worldly goods and your children are but a trial and a temptation, and that with God there is a tremendous reward." - (8:28)
Inasmuch as love of worldly goods and a desire to protect one's family may lead a person to transgression (and, thus, to a betrayal of the moral values postulated in God's message), they are described as fitnah - which, in this context, is best rendered by the two words "trial and temptation". This reminder connects with verse {8:25} above, "beware of that temptation to evil which does not befall only those who are bent on denying the truth," since it is acquisitiveness and a desire to confer benefits on one's own family which often tempt an otherwise good person to offend against the rights of his fellow-men. It is to be borne in mind that, contrary to the New Testament, the Qur'an does not postulate a contempt for worldly attachments as a pre-requisite of righteousness: it only demands of man that he should not allow these attachments to deflect him from the pursuit of moral verities.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation: The implication is that family and wealth – all are a trial from God. If Muslims deal with them, considering them to be a trial, they will succeed; they should rest assured that the loss they suffer in this cause will be compensated in the Hereafter because great reward lies with God alone.

So hold Allah in awe as much as you can, and listen and obey, and be charitable. This is for your own good. And whoever remains safe from his own greediness, it is such that will prosper. )

At another place in the Quran it has been said: Fear Allah as rightfully He should be feared. (Surah Aal-Imran, Ayat 102). At still another place: Allah does not burden any one with a responsibility heavier than he can bear. (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 286) And here: Fear Allah as much as you can. When these three verses are read together it appears that the first verse sets an ideal which every believer should try to attain. The second verse lays down the principle that no one has been required to exert himself beyond his power and ability, for in Allah’s religion one has been made responsible only for what is within his power and ability. This verse enjoins every believer to try to attain piety and consciousness of God as far as he can. He should carry out His commands and avoid His disobedience as best as he possibly can. For if he shows laxity in this regard, he will not be able to escape punishment. However, one will not be held accountable for what was beyond his power and Allah alone can decide best what was really beyond a person’s power and ability.

" And whoever remains safe from his own greediness, it is such that will prosper. "  For explanation, see (explanation of verse 9 of Surah Al-Hashr - reproduced herein under).
The word used here means “is saved” and not “was safe”, for without Allah's help and succor no one can attain to the wealth of the heart (liberal-mindedness) by his own power and effort. This is a blessing of God, which one can attain only by God’s bounty and grace. The word shuhha is used for stinginess and miserliness in Arabic. But when this word is attributed to the self of man, it becomes synonymous with narrow-mindedness, niggardliness, mean spiritedness and small-heartedness, and not mere stinginess: it is rather the root cause of stinginess itself. Because of this very quality man avoids acknowledging even the good qualities of another, not to speak of recognizing his rights and discharging them. He wants that he alone should gather up everything in the world, and no one else should have anything of it. He never feels content with his own right, but usurps the rights of others, or at least wants to have for himself all that is good in the world and should not leave anything for others. On this very basis one’s being saved from this evil has been described in the Quran as a guarantee for success. The Prophet (peace be upon him) has counted it among the most evil qualities of man which are the root cause of corruption and mischief. Jabir bin Abdullah has reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Avoid shuhha for it was shuhha which ruined the people before you. It incited them to shed each other’s blood and make the sacred and forbidden things of others lawful for themselves. (Muslim, Musnad Ahmad, Baihaqi, Bukhari in Al-Adab). The tradition of Abdullah bin Umar contains the following words: It led them to commit wickedness and they committed it. It commanded them to commit sins and they committed sin. It urged them to break off all connections with the kindred and they broke off all connections with them. (Musnad Ahmad, Abu Daud, Nasai). Abu Hurairah has reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Faith and shuhha of the self cannot combine in one and the same heart. (Ibn Abi Shaibah, Nasa Baihaqi in Shuab al-Iman, Hakim). Abu Said Khudri has stated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Two of the qualities are such that they cannot combine in a Muslim: stinginess and misbehavior. (Abu Daud, Tirmidhi, Bukhari in Al-Adab). It is as a result of this very teaching of Islam that, apart from individuals, the Muslims as a nation are still the most generous and liberal minded people in the world.

Yusuf Ali  Explanation: "Fear Allah" combined with "as much as you can" obviously means: "lead lives of self-restraint and righteousness": the usual meaning of Taqwa: see explanation to ii. 2.

Charity is meant to help and do good to other people who need it. But it has the highest subjective value for the person who gives it. Like mercy "it blesseth him that gives and him that takes". It purifies the giver's soul: the affection that he pours out is for his own spiritual benefit and progress. Cf. Coleridge: "He prayeth best who loveth best all things both great and small, for the Great God Who loveth us, Who made and loveth all".

Cf. lix. 9. Our worst enemy is within ourselves,-the grasping selfishness which would deprive others of their just rights or seize things which do not properly belong to it. If we can get over this covetous selfishness, we achieve real Prosperity in justice and truth.

Muhammad Asad Explanation: Cf. last sentence of 59:9 (reproduced herein under):

"... for, such as from their own covetousness are saved - it is they, they that shall attain to a happy state!"

Thus, greed, niggardliness and covetousness are pointed out here as the main obstacles to man's attaining to a happy state in this world and in the hereafter (cf. surah {102}).

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation: The actual word is: شُحّ. It means “miserliness and stinginess.” In this verse, it is related to the soul. This is because miserliness is one of the inclinations found in the soul; hence like anger and lust, it too needs to be restrained.

Imam Amin Ahsan Islahi has explained it He writes: … The only way to check it is that when a person starts to feel its domination, he should weaken it by spending for the cause of God until it becomes so weak that it is not able to impede virtuous deeds. It is evident from these words of the Qur’an that those who try to suppress this instinct succeed by the blessing of God, and only those who succeed in this effort are worthy of success in the Hereafter. For this reason, spending for the cause of God is the greatest thing which can earn His pleasure specially the spending which a person does by disregarding his own personal needs. (Amin Ahsan Islahi, Tadabbur-i Qur’an, vol. 8, 424)

So let us beware of these two worldly possessions the love of which may fail us in the test Allah is given us and be always be ready to sacrifice our best of things to please Allah. We should pray Allah does not put us in any trial, specially with regard to our children. And for this we should give out charity as much as possible to extend a good loan to Allah to save us from any test in which may not be able to do justice to ourselves.

Please listen to explanation of the ayat by eminent Muslim scholar Nouman Ali Khan:
May Allah help us understand Qur'ān and help us to act upon the commandments of Allah contained therein. Aameen.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully.

An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs of the Qur'ān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. In that the exegesis of the chapters of the Quran is mainly based on the "Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an" by one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi.
In order to augment and add more explanation as already provided, additional input has been interjected from following sources:
  • Towards Understanding the Quran
  • Tafsir Ibn Khatir
  • Muhammad Asad Translation
  • Javed Ahmad Ghamidi / Al Mawrid
  • Al-Quran, Yusuf Ali Translation
  • Verse by Verse Qur'an Study Circle
In addition the references of other sources which have been explored have also been given above. Those desirous of detailed explanations and tafsir (exegesis), may refer to these sites.

Who are the true servants of Allah

Entering into the fold of Islam doesn't take much: Just recite the shahada and you are in - a great blessing and a step into the right direction and to find an opportunity to walk on the Sirat ul Mustaqeem (the straight path). But that is the first step because from now on you are going to walk on a very difficult path full of bumps and roadblocks for road to truth is never been easy.

From now on one has to decide: Whetehr to be an ordinary Muslim or a Muslim and beleiver who are to be the true servants of Allah. Now the latter are people who are preferred over ordinary Muslims. But for being loved by Allah, one has to put in something extra. We have already shared many posts on the subject, but Qur'an is full of tips on how to be true servants of Allah. In this regard, we share three verses from Surah 25. Al-Furqan (verses 63-65) that spell out how to be true servants of Allah. Decide after reading of these verses and decide for yourself.
Javed Ahmad Ghamidi notes that from here onwards, the addressees are invited in a very moving style to adhere to qualities which arise in a person if he has a true comprehension of God. An admonition is sounded in it to the arrogant Quraysh that they should observe their character and conduct in this mirror while at the same time believers are urged to consider the qualities their Lord wants them to adopt.
(25:63) The true servants of the Merciful One are those who walk on the earth gently and when the foolish ones address them, they simply say: "Peace to you";

وَالَّذِيۡنَ يَبِيۡتُوۡنَ لِرَبِّهِمۡ سُجَّدًا وَّقِيَامًا‏
(25:64) who spend the night prostrating themselves before their Lord and standing;

 وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا ٱصْرِفْ عَنَّا عَذَابَ جَهَنَّمَ ۖ إِنَّ عَذَابَهَا كَانَ غَرَامًا
(25:65) who entreat: "Our Lord! Ward off from us the chastisement of Hell, for its chastisement is one that clings.

That is, "Though all human beings are by birth the servants of the Merciful before Whom you have been invited to prostrate yourselves, and which you disdain, his true servants are those who adopt the way of His obedience consciously and develop such desirable characteristics. Then the natural consequences of the prostration are those found in the lives of the Believers and the evil results of rejecting the invitation, those found in your lives." Here attention is being drawn to the two patterns of character and life: first of those who had accepted the Message of the Holy Prophet and were following it, and the second of those who persisted in the ways of ignorance. Here only the prominent characteristics of the true Believers have been cited, and for contrast, the characteristics of the disbelievers have been left to every discerning eye and mind which could see them all around in society and make its own decision.

those who walk on the earth gently ) That is; "They do not walk haughtily and arrogantly like the tyrants and mischief-makers, but their "gait" is of a gentle, right-thinking and good natured person." "Walking humbly" does not mean walking like a weak or sick person, nor does it imply the gait of a hypocrite who walks ostentatiously to show humility or fear of God. According to Traditions, the Holy Prophet himself used to walk with firm, quick steps. One day Caliph `Umar saw a young man walking slowly like a weak, sick person, and asked him, "Are you ill?" When the man replied in the negative, the Caliph raised his whip, rebuked him and told him to walk like a healthy man. This shows that the "humble gait" is the natural gait of a noble and gentle person and not a gait which shows weakness and undue humility.

In this connection, the first characteristic of the true servants of Allah to which attention has been drawn, is their "gait" This is because the gait indicates the character of an individual. If a man walks in a humble and dignified way, as opposed to a haughty, vain and proud manner, it shows that he is a noble and gentle person. Thus the different "gaits" of the different types of people show what sort of characters they possess. The verse means to imply that the true servants of the Merciful can be easily recognized by their "gait" among the people. Their attitude of Allah's worship and obedience has changed them so thoroughly that it can "be seen at first sight from their "gate that they are noble, humble and good natured people, who cannot be expected to indulge in any mischief. For further explanation, see E.N.43 of Bani Isra'il and E.N 33 of Luqman.
Tafsir Ibn-Kathir:  meaning that they walk with dignity and humility, not with arrogance and pride. This is like the Ayah: (And walk not on the earth with conceit and arrogance...) (17:37). So these people do not walk with conceit or arrogance or pride. This does not mean that they should walk like sick people, making a show of their humility, for the leader of the sons of Adam (the Prophet) used to walk as if he was coming downhill, and as if the earth were folded up beneath him. What is meant here by Hawn is serenity and dignity, as the Messenger of Allah said: (When you come to the prayer, do not come rushing in haste. Come calmly and with tranquility, and whatever you catch up with, pray, and whatever you miss, make it up.)
Javed Ahmad Ghamidi explains that their gait is not the gait of the arrogant and haughty. Such a gait reflects a person’s inner self. Wealth, authority, knowledge and skill, beauty and physical power and other similar things produce conceit in a person. The arrogance of each of them manifests in the gait of a person in a specific way and testifies to the fact that his heart is devoid of any comprehension of worship and conception of God. The heart which has comprehension of worship and conception of God beats in the chest of those who are humble and down to earth. Instead of showing arrogance, they walk humbly on earth.
when the foolish ones address them, they simply say: "Peace to you" ) "Ignorant people": Rude and insolent people and not uneducated and illiterate ones. The true servants of the "Merciful" do not believe in "vengeance", even though they may have to deal with the ignorant people who behave rudely and insolently towards them. If they happen to come across such people, they wish them peace and turn away. The same thing has been expressed in AI-Qasas: 55, thus: "And when they hear something vain and absurd they turn away from it, saying, `Our deeds are for us and your deeds are for you: peace be to you: we have nothing to do with the ignorant'." For details see E.N.'s 72 to 78 of Al-Qasas.
Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: If the ignorant people insult them with bad words, they do not respond in kind, but they forgive and overlook, and say nothing but good words. This is what the Messenger of Allah did: the more ignorant the people, the more patient he would be. This is as Allah says: (And when they hear Al-Laghw (evil or vain talk), they withdraw from it) (28:55).
Yusuf Ali  Explanation: Ignorant: in a moral sense. Address: in the aggressive sense. Their humility is shown in two ways: (1) to those in real search of knowledge, they give such knowledge as they have and as the recipients can assimilate; (2) to those who merely dispute, they do not speak harshly, but say "Peace!", as much as to say, "May it be well with you, may you repent and be better"; or "May Allah give me peace from such wrangling"; or "Peace, and Good-bye; let me leave you!"
who spend the night prostrating themselves before their Lord and standing ) That is, they neither spend their nights in fun and merry-making nor in gossips and telling tales, nor in doing wicked deeds, for these are the ways of the ignorant people. The true servants of Allah pass their nights in worshipping and remembering Him as much as they can. This characteristic of theirs has been brought out clearly at several places in the Qur'an, thus: "their backs forsake their beds and they invoke their Lord in fear and in hope." (As-Sajdah: 16). "These people (of Paradise) slept but little at night, and prayed for their forgiveness in the hours of the morning." (Az-Zariyat: 17, 18). And: "Can the end of the one, who is obedient to Allah, prostrates himself and stands before Him during the hours of the night, fears the Hereafter and places his hope in the mercy of his Lord, be like that of a mushrik;'" (Az-Zumar: 9).
Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: meaning, worshipping and obeying Him. This is like the Ayat: (They used to sleep but little by night. And in the hours before dawn, they were asking for forgiveness) (51:17-18), (Their sides forsake their beds...) (32:16), (Is one who is obedient to Allah, prostrating himself or standing during the hours of the night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord...) (39:9).
Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation: In the words of Imām Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī, this refers to the tahajjud prayer in which a person fervently stands and prostrates before God. The devotion and anxiety which is evident from the style of this verse does not need elaboration. (Tadabbur-i Qur’ān, vol. 5, 487)
Yusuf Ali  Explanation: (Those who say "Our Lord! avert from us the Wrath of Hell for its Wrath is indeed an affliction grievous) This is a prayer of humility: such a person relies, not on any good works which he may have done, but on the Grace and Mercy of Allah; and he shows a lively sense of the Day of Judgment, when every action will weigh for or against a soul.
