General rule of Intercession in Qur'an

In our series of posts on Selected verses from Qur'an, we share the general rule of intercession as mentioned in the 85th verse of Surah 4. An Nisa (The Women). This rule applies to the effort put in by a person to attract others to good, which leaves a positive and pleasing impact not on people but on society as a whole. At this same time, there are others, who are obsessed with evil within, and try to entice others to follow the evil ways.

That is, different people behave differently and with different results. Some urge others to exert themselves for the cause of Allah and to exalt His Word and they get its reward. There are others who spread misunderstandings among the people about Allah's cause, discourage the Muslims and try to dissuade them from exalting the Word of Allah and thus incur punishment.

In fact, there is more evil that is being spread than good for it suits many who want chaos and disharmony among the Muslims. The spread of Islamophobia is in fact a step in this direction to mislead Muslims and derail them from their faith and encourage them to fall into their trap to suit their interests and harm that of the Muslims. Let us read the selected verse of today and see how scholars of Islam interpret it:

(4:85) He who intercedes in a good cause shall share in its good result, and he who intercedes in an evil cause shall share in its burden. Allah watches over everything.

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir
(Whosoever intercedes for a good cause, will have the reward thereof;) meaning, whoever intercedes in a matter that produces good results, will acquire a share in that good.

(And whosoever intercedes for an evil cause, will have a share in its burden.) meaning, he will carry a burden due to what resulted from his intercession and intention. For instance, it is recorded in the Sahih that the Prophet said, (Intercede and you will gain a reward for it. Yet, Allah shall decide whatever He wills by the words of His Prophet.) Mujahid bin Jabr said, "This Ayah was revealed about the intercession of people on behalf of each other.'

Yusuf Ali Explanation
In this fleeting world's chances Allah's providence and justice may not always appear plain to our eyes. But we are asked to believe that if we help and support a good cause, we share in all its credit and in its eventual victory. And conversely, we cannot support a bad cause without sharing in all its evil consequences. If appearances seem against this faith, let us not be deceived by appearances. For Allah has power over all things.

Qur'an Wiki Explanation:
In the context of God’s Messenger’s exhortation to the believers to fight, towards the end of the passage, and the reference to those who discourage and dampen the spirit to fight, at its beginning, the sūrah states a general rule regarding intercession. The statement implies instruction, advice and co-operation. “Whoever rallies to a good cause shall have a share in its [benefit], and whoever rallies to an evil cause shall have a share in its [burden]. God watches over everything.” (Verse 85)

Whoever participates in mobilizing and encouraging and supporting others to fight for the cause of God will receive his due share of the reward for the fighting and its consequences. But those who promote demoralization and discouragement will bear responsibility for the outcome of their exhortations. The Arabic term kill chosen in this context suggests liability for the consequences as well as the actions themselves.

This is a universal principle, which applies to intercession for good or for evil. The

Qur’ān often establishes a general principle through the discussion of a particular issue or event, linking the two together and referring the whole question to God Almighty. He is the source of everything and the source of all power, as the Arabic word used in commenting on the verse indicates: “God watches over everything.” (Verse 85)

Let us join hands with those whose intentions are pure and clean, who intend to do good for others. At the same time, we should be on the lookout for those wanting harm to spread by the easily fooled straight Muslims. If we look around more evil is being injected through social media that is adversely affecting the Muslim youth and taking them away from the teachings of Islam. Beware, especially parents and elders, and educate your children to look for good rather than evil, for consequences of good are rewards and blessings, and consequences of bad and evil are adverse on morals and life.
May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.
وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏
(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”
That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Note: When we mention God in our posts, we mean One True God, we call Allah in Islam, with no associates. Allah is the Sole Creator of all things, and that Allah is all-powerful and all-knowing. Allah has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.

An effort has been made to gather explanation / exegesis of the surahs of the Qur'ān from authentic sources and then present a least possible condensed explanation of the surah. In that the exegesis of the chapters of the Quran is mainly based on the "Tafhim al-Qur'an - The Meaning of the Qur'an" by one of the most enlightened scholars of the Muslim World Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi.
In order to augment and add more explanation as already provided, additional input has been interjected from the following sources:
  • Tafsir Ibn Khatir
  • Muhammad Asad Translation
  • Yusuf Ali Translation
  • Translation Javed Ahmad Ghamidi / Al Mawrid
  • Qur'an Wiki
  • Verse by Verse Qur'an Study Circle
  • Towards Understanding the Quran
In addition, references of other sources which have been explored have also been given above. Those desirous of detailed explanations and tafsir (exegesis), may refer to these sites.

Visit three places, often, to understand the meaning of life

Generally, all of us are so engrossed in the colours of life, that we forget how much we are blessed with and how Allah blesses us without even being asked and desired. For many, merrymaking, fun and laughter is what life is all about. For many others, indulging in a sinful life to satisfy their lewdness is the purpose of life. But unfortunately, many do not value life the way it should be or live life as it should be to please Allah for it is He who has created us and provided us with means of sustenance, which most of the people around the world really long for.

In order to prove my point, let me share a valuable eye opener which if really understood will open the doors for us to understand the reality of life. This was shared by one of my sisters in Islam and with her permission I am sharing it with my readers:

A rich person looked out the window and saw someone taking things out of the trash...!! He said: Thank God that I am not poor...!! The poor man looked up and saw a crazy person wandering in the street...!! He said: I thank God that I am not crazy...!! The crazy person looked forward and saw an ambulance...!! He said: I thank God that I am not sick...!! In the hospital, a sick person passes the body of a dead man...!! He says: I thank God that I am alive...!!

Only the dead could not thank God for anything...!! So, what does life mean to you and me...!!?? In order to understand the meaning of life, you must visit three places: Hospital, prison and graveyard /cemetery.

In the hospital you will see that there is nothing more beautiful than health. In prison, you will see that there is nothing more beautiful than freedom. And in the cemetery, you will see that life is not worth anything...!! The ground you tread now will be your roof tomorrow...!! We all came with nothing and we will leave with nothing...!!

This is why we must be humble before God Almighty We thank Him at all times for all... What we are and everything we have... it is blessing of Allah who gave us so much without being asked or even making a request. And when we visit a hospital, we know the meaning of a healthy life. Even if a thumb is cut off, we suddenly find how important it was for the function of our hand. And so is good for a loss of eye or a limb. Just see those who have lost their body parts and how they dearly feel the void that has been created since. Or see the life of someone who is born blind. Can we still remain oblivious of the blessing that we are blessed with?

And a prison would remind us that it is all about freedom that life really is. There are many who undergo a life sentence and would never see the world again. How torturous it is to see the high walls of prison and the feeling of losing their families. They must be thinking all the time how their children were being raised and would there be enough for them to live a decent life?

But the real answer comes up when one stands alone in the quietness of a graveyard. There, close by us, lie between the surface of earth, many who took life to be a playing field where they yelled and cheered and made fun, not caring for a second that they have to be thankful to their Lord for the good they have. But the death angel did not wait for them to thank God and one day quietly made their exit from this worldly life forever.

The grave finally dawns on us the reality of life. A final full stop when nothing could be added or subtracted. And mind you, this full stop comes without announcing, just like I am typing this post, and I never knew whether I would live to hit the full stop. and freedom.

Before the end comes and we are taken to be buried under the earth, let us understand the true reality of life. Let us start to thank our Lord for every penny that we have, our health and our freedom. We still have breath left in us to repent and seek forgiveness so that when we leave, we leave with a satisfied heart to embark upon a journey which would one day lead us to stand in front our Lord. Such will be the blessed ones who would say:

“O soul that are at rest! Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), So enter among My servants, and enter into My garden.” (Quran, 89:27-30)

If we have played our innings well, we will be the most blessed people. But if we wasted our life to enjoy to worldly life, and never thanked our Lord for His blessing or never repented our sins and sought His forgiveness, then rest assured the blazing fire of hell will never spare us, God forbids.

“And spend [in the way of Allah] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, ‘My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous’. But never will Allah delay a soul when its time has come. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.” (Quran, 63:10-11)

So do not wait to die. Be alive to the reality of death and make ARRANGEMENTS for a blessed life in the hereafter rather than a life in hell that no one can imagine how brutal and painful it would be.

Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

Man is mortal!! This is something that we have been listening to since our early school days. But the wisdom behind this phrase start to dawn on a man when he walks along a path or travels and ultimately ends up in his journey at his destination. No destination is infinite for every beginning has an end. Life too is like a journey: we are born and we commence our life long journey till we find our final resting place, our grave. Even if we manage to stuff our suitcases with precious souvenirs and fancy clothes, the end is in a state when a man has nothing but his body which rots away in a few days under the earth.

What remains with man is his good or otherwise deeds that he did during his earthly life. These are his invisible companions that accompany him on his next journey to the Day of Resurrection when he will be rewarded or awarded for all he did. So let us stuff our suitcases with good virtues that will save us when none other will come forward for help.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has referred men as strangers and traveler for he has no permanent home. He carries on his journey as long as he lives. If he chooses the right path, his end will be rewarding, leading to Jannah / paradise. But if he walks on paths that are though fascinating and inviting with lewdness and sins, his destination will be the burning fire of hell.

This Hadith is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī  (Book 81 - To make the Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq) كتاب الرقاق / Chapter 3: Be in this world as if you were a stranger باب قَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ كُنْ فِي الدُّنْيَا كَأَنَّكَ غَرِيبٌ، أَوْ عَابِرُ سَبِيلٍ ‏ ) as Hadith 6416, given herein under:

Narrated by Mujahid:

`Abdullah bin `Umar said, "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) took hold of my shoulder and said, 'Be in this world as if you were a stranger or a traveler." The sub-narrator added: Ibn `Umar used to say, "If you survive till the evening, do not expect to be alive in the morning, and if you survive till the morning, do not expect to be alive in the evening, and take from your health for your sickness, and (take) from your life for your death."

So, choose your path for your life long travel well, lest embarking upon a journey of pleasures alone robs us of our good reward at the end.
Compiled verses from Qur'an on specific subjects: Life

Ask anyone what life is, and the first thing that would strike one's mind will be a period of time full of joy, laughter and making merry. And rightly so, a majority of people around the globe would love a life without any bounds, a time of joy and of least sorrow. We see people being born, growing up and then fading away into their graves forever, yet we continue to be engrossed in merrymaking and always intending a boundless, limitless and carefree life.

People have started to dislike religions for these present a different meaning of life. A time of one's being alive on this earth is meant to be temporary, a time of test for everyone. Those who are steadfast and know the meaning of their life, their outlook toward life is altogether different from those who do not see anything beyond this life.
“They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow (NIV).” - Psalm 144:4

“The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more (NIV).” - Psalm 103:15-16
This is how Divine words describe life for us. But do we ponder over these small, yet very powerful and meaningful sentences? Never, because if we do, we will be more worried about our life in the Hereafter and will try to live a time on this earthly world as is directed in the Divine Scriptures.

In Qur'an too, the same message is repeated, but unfortunately while non-Muslims may pay heed to Psalms, Torah and Bible, the mention of same theme in Qur'an seems to them something out of place and meaningless.
This worldly life is only Diversion and Amusement (Surah 29. Al-Ankabut:64)
Ponder over Death and Life - for Allah created these to judge which of you is better in deeds (Surah 67. Al Mulk: 2)

These are just two of the many verses in Qur'an which caution the man to think over life and death much too often for if we forget death, we shall be grossly misled by the evil and we will fall into a trap from which is very hard to escape.  We have already shared a number of verses from Qur'an on Life and Death. Herein under we have combined all these posts to serve as a ready reckoner:

Herein under, we share a very informative lecture by eminent Muslim scholar Nouman Ali Khan in which he describes WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE IN ISLAM:
May we learn the purpose of this earthly life as told to us in many verses of Qur'an and as explained above in the video, for time is too short before our clock on this earth stops to click anymore and we end up attending a roll call where every act of our time in our 'previous' life will be questioned and result of worldly tests announced. Pray that we pass on that day, for failures will have a dreadful abode of burning fire and boiling waters.

We will keep adding more verses so as to make this collection wholesome.

Bring your heart back to life with the Qur'an

Life is not meant to be stagnant - one has to move on no matter how good or bad times one may be having. For if one becomes stagnant in ideas, perceptions, preferred choice of means of sustenance or even choice of a role modelled spouce, one may end up in rejections and results of not one's liking. Life has its own dynamics as conceived by our Creator and one cannot have many choices left.

Life, like water, is dynamic and vibrant. Like water, which if it remains stagnant, will become foul smelling and distasteful. So, we do not let the water store over a long period of time. We let it flow so that fresh water replaces the rusty water and that is how life thrives both within, that is marine life, and without, that is humans, animals, birds and plants,

And if one's heart is hollow and there is no inclination to the Creator Who in fact controls everything in the entire universe, one may soon lose the perception and meaning of the life. Those whose hearts move with the Qur'an are never fearful of future, nor do they recall their yesterdays to haunt their lives forever. In fact, sometimes the pain that we are going through is a sign that life is stagnant and we need to step up to our better version. Sometimes the suffering hides behind it the abundance we thought we would never receive. Sometimes life challenges us so that you can transform. So let us move forward, always and except for repenting past deeds, let these deeds or should we call misdeeds haunt us all our lives. And keep Qur'an as our beacon to enlighten our hearts and tomorrows.

This was just the premise for a thought-provoking lecture by eminent scholar Nauman Ali Khan, share herein under, for it may open up our hearts and brighten up our todays and tomorrows:
Nouman Ali Khan, born to a Pakistani family, is an American Muslim speaker and Arabic instructor who founded the Bayyinah Institute for Arabic and Qur’anic Studies, after serving as an instructor of Arabic at Nassau Community College. He has been named one of the 500 most influential Muslims in the world by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre of Jordan.

May we always seek guidance and light from Qur'an and our hearts are always enlightened with the blessings of Qur'an. Ameen

Resurgence of Islamophobia - Time Sanity Prevails

Islamophobia is nota new term anymore for now it has been used excessively over the years to show "growing concern" about Islam and the threat it makes to the Christian world for Islam has now become one of the fastest growing religion in the world. More and more non Muslims are embracing Islam for the ultimately come to the conclusion that word of Qur'an is more closer to the Divine Truth that what is being preached in the churches and synagogues.

Thus it makes Islam an easy target for the hard core follows of other faiths to target Islam on one pretext or the other to debase Islam and Muslims, specially those living in the non Muslim countries and make their living difficult under tougher anti Islam environment. They know that Muslims get intimidated and provoked easily when the very personality of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is targeted.  And in this regard, France is in the forefronts which by taking its Freedom of Speech law more often than not debase Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, by using social and print media.

Years ago, the publication of caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical weekly magazine, left a very bad taste of France about Muslims living in France. And obviously this hurts Muslims not only in France but the world over to see demeaning caricatures of their beloved Prophet and get provoked.
When this happened, at that time while much of the (Christian) world  rallied in solidarity with the publication, its irreverent cartoonists and their right to free speech, there were some saner rejections too. Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, a U.S. organization that "defends the rights of Catholics," issued a statement titled "Muslims are right to be angry." In it, Donohue criticized the publication's history of offending the world's religiously devout, including non-Muslims. In fact his statement ended with a quote from U.S. founding father James Madison: "Liberty may be endangered by the abuses of liberty, as well as by the abuses of power." In other words, we may be free to speak, but we have to appreciate the value of that right.
And when they express their anger, the French government takes sides of its writers and cartoonists and support them for they cannot be prosecuted under the Freedom of Speech law. In fact they have never shown concerns of such publications which are in fact the main cause of Muslims' sharp reaction and protests.

The hate for Islam in France is not a new thing. Back in 1890, a play screened in Paris also targeted Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). And as reported in the history, the then Sultan of Abdul Hamid II of the Ottoman Empire took a very serious note of the insults being hurled on to Prophet of Allah and summoned the French ambassador to his court and showed his discontent in very blunt tone:

The publication of caricatures, burning of copies of Qur'an and hates speeches are now gearing up in many countries across Europe, specially Fence, Norway and Denmark. The very recent issue of a French teacher showing the caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has further added fuel to fire, which ended up in sad event of murdering of the teacher by an 18 years old Chechen, who was instantly killed by police. While the Muslims condemned the act of the teacher, they also condemned the act of the young Chechen, for Islam does not allow killing people for difference of opinion. But at the same time, the people of France would understand the sentiments of Muslims and should not support those hurting their religion by pen or by tongue.

This time the reaction of the Muslim world is much sharper and instant than before and many a Muslim countries have banned French imports and taken of French made commodities off the the shelves. Turkey's president and prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, have severely criticized the French president who vowed to continue allowing caricatures and drawings and supporting French journalists and writers to continue with their anti Islam drive for he doesn't want to challenge the freedom of speech law of his country. Even the French non Muslims have started to tell Muslims to leave their country if they cannot respect their laws. But the point is why cannot the French people respect the sentiments of Muslims, which the largest single minority in France? Does it mean France is at war with its Muslim citizens?

Where this terrible state of affairs of intimidating and provoking Muslims will lead to? Cannot the non Muslims learn to respect the religious sentiments of Muslims rather than defending their right to freedom of speech. Instead of moving to the path of tolerance and religious harmony, I think the world is drifting apart more rapidly than before and the present wave of resurgence of Islamophobia will really hurt both Muslims and Non Muslims alike.

After the incident, the French president went public and severely attacked Islam over the death of a French teacher, for showing cartoons of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) during a class on free speech. Not only this, just last month, he had refused to denounce the infamous magazine Charlie Hebdo after it decided to republish Prophet (PBUH) sketches, provoking French Muslims to react. When asked about his opinion on the matter, the French President said that he was in no position to deny the magazine its right of ‘free speech.’

Responding to the French president response, Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan lambasted French President Macron for attacking Islam.
Khan said that Macron deliberately hurt the sentiments of millions of Muslims around the world. PM Khan said that a real leader unites human beings rather than dividing them. This is a time when President Macron could have put healing touch & denied space to extremists rather than creating further polarization & marginalization that inevitably leads to radicalization. Instead, he encouraged Islamophobia by attacking Islam ‘rather than the terrorists who carry out violence, be it Muslims, White Supremacists or Nazi ideologists.’

Imran Khan also wrote to Mr. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook asking for Facebook to place a similar ban on Islamophobia and hate against Islam that has been put in place for the Holocaust.

Here I may again refer to a quote from U.S. founding father James Madison: "Liberty may be endangered by the abuses of liberty, as well as by the abuses of power."  So let not French people, or any other non Muslim people and governments around the world misuse the liberty and freedom of expression for it may be endangered by the abuse of liberty and freedom laws. Let sanity prevail and let us not hurt feelings and sentiments, specially the religious sentiments, of others.

Meantime, the Turkish president too has expressed his dismay over the French president's response to the incident and has asked for sweeping boycott of French goods:

Islam and Life of Muslims in Non Muslim Countries: Honduras

Honduras is the only Latin American country which has the largest population of Arab immigrants outside the Western Hemisphere. although, the majority of these Arab immigrants are of Orthodox and Catholic Christian descent totaling something between 150,000 to 200,000, the Muslims form part a fraction of it, that is between 5,000 to 6,000 including the local converts.

Sarah Souli in her post "A visit to the Biggest Little Mosque in Honduras" says:
The introduction of Islam to Honduras is linked to the waves of Arab immigration, explains Rodolfo Pastor Fasquelle, a historian at San Pedro Sula’s Museo de Antropologia e Historia.
“In 1870 the national railroad pact was signed with the British,” Fasquelle said, while giving a tour around the museum’s exhibit of 19th-century artifacts. “It was a great fiasco—it never got past the mountains—but it did connect San Pedro Sula to the coastline. And as the city became an internal port, it became crucial to trade with the outside world.” Goods came, and so did immigrants from Europe, North America, and increasingly, the Middle East. Arab migration came in three waves: from 1895-1915 as the Ottoman Empire suffered a string of crises; from 1925 to 1940 in the wake of the First World War; and again from 1950-1970, after visas became easier to obtain.
In 1984, an Islamic charitable organization was founded, with the main object of taking care of the interests of the Arabs and Muslims in the country, and they have since built a mosque, where they meet and discuss their social and religious affairs, including the education of their children, the most important of which is teaching them the Qur’an and the Arabic language.

For many years there was no mosque / masjid in Honduras. But now there are two masjids: the one in San Pedro Sula, and a smaller one in the capital city of Tegucigalpa. Pakistani factory owners, converted Honduran military generals and Cuban flaneurs are just a few of the people who attend jumu’ah (Friday prayers) in the masjid in San Pedro Sula. Imam Mohammed, a Pakistani who leads the service, says that only around 30 people attend prayers at the mosque on a weekly basis.

The revert experiences are unique for the Hondurans, Sarah Souli explains [2]
“I started studying Islam alone, and the path of Allah came for me,” Colonel Orlando Ajalla Gaños told us. Raised Catholic, the colonel has spent the last nine years commuting weekly to the mosque from his home in Tegucigalpa. “I was always happy but since becoming Muslim I am even more happy—you can call me Saif,” he added, referring to his Islamic name as he adjusted his taqiyah (cap).
Arnaldo Hernandez, a Garifuna fisherman, drives three hours from his home in the coastal town of La Ceiba to attend Friday prayers. He converted to Islam from Christianity 26 years ago, though, as he is quick to point out with a huge grin, “we are all Muslims.”
The prayers are spoken in a mix of Arabic and Spanish to serve the mosque's diverse population of worshippers.

Honduras’s constitution protects freedom and practice of religion—though the government only officially recognizes the Roman Catholic church; all other religious groups are categorized as religious associations and have fewer rights and privileges. [3]
“We haven’t had any problems with racism,” stated Imam Mohammed who gives the Friday prayer sermon at the mosque in Spanish and Arabic languages.
Hernandez, the Garifuna fisherman expressed that “there’s no distinguishing between race and color. We’re all brothers, that’s the base of Islam. It’s a benediction to have this community.”
The Muslim community has its unity and cohesiveness. There are weekly dinners organized by Mr. Yusuf, a Pakistani Muslim who owns a string of factories and is one of the country’s richest men. Everyone contributes to the mosque’s upkeep—a donation box is passed around after the prayers. In this sky-blue Caribbean mosque, the best parts of Islam—equality, fraternity, love—seem to shine.

Islam and Life of Muslims in Non Muslim Countries: Panama

Panama is a transcontinental country in Central America and South America. Muslims constitute less than one percent of Panama’s approximately four million people, yet they enjoy peace and acceptance in one of the world’s most tolerant countries. A group of about 500 is said to have arrived on the Atlantic coast of Panama in 1552, escaped from a sinking ship. And this small group multiplied, build mosques in the areas now known as Darién Province, Bay of San Miguel, San Blas Islands and the area along the Bayano River, named after Bayano. But this group perished in history and no more is known about them.

The present day Muslims are Muslim immigrants from Indian sub continent that came in the early 20th century. In 1929 another group came from Bombay, India who went on to form the Sunni Indo-Pakistani Muslim Society. From 1929-1948 this organization (renamed Panama Muslim Mission) initiated construction on a mosque in Panama City. The location was half completed and was used for Eid prayers and classes for new Muslims, who numbered about twenty-five blacks of West Indian descent.

In 1932 there was a group of Muslim in San Miguel, Calidonia in Panama City who resided in Short Street where they held meetings and prayers. The Muslims in Panama City of Indo-Pakistan origins had no family structure until 1951 when the first families arrived. In 1963, they purchased a plot in the local cemetery called Jardin de Paz; in 1991, property was purchased in an area called Arraijan, which is now used solely as a Muslim cemetery.

The Indo-Pakistani Muslims began teaching their children at home in 1965 until 1973, when a small teaching program began in a room above Bazar Hindustan on Central Avenue, Panama City. In 1978, they began to use a place in the area of Perejil, Panama City, where prayers and meetings took place until the completion of the El Centro Cultural Islámico de Colón on January 15, 1982. This masjid was built jointly by the Islamic Call Society (based in Libya) and Salomon Bhikhu a local merchant from India. Since its inauguration, classes have been held in the evenings and Sundays for new Muslims and people interested in Islam. As of March 1997, there were four mosques Panama.

Today, The diverse Muslim community in Panama comprises Muslims from different origins and cultures. The thriving community started recently to draw native followers besides the Muslim immigrants who are mainly from Lebanon, Palestine, India and Pakistan. Most Muslims in Panama live in the major cities of Panama City and Colón, with smaller numbers in other provincial cities. The number of Muslim reverts in the Central American republic of Panama has been growing rapidly over the past years.
The Jama Masjid (above) is Panama's first mosque. It was founded in 1981 and that makes it, as far as we are aware, the first mosque in Central America. The masjid was built by in Avenida Balboa by Imam Bhattay’s grandfather with the help of the Libyan Embassy covering half of the expenses.

Al Haqq mosque, is yet another hallmark mosque built by two Panamanian Muslims, Josefina Bell-Munajj and Khadijah Jackson. Today, more than 500 Muslims attend the Friday prayer at Jama Mosque, besides two or three new converts attending the mosque every week. The Number of Panamanians joining Islam is rapidly growing, according to Ahmad Bhattay, a leader at Panama City’s Jama Mosque.

The Panamanian Muslims have two distinct dialects: Urdu and Arabic, for most of the Muslims either belong to Indo-Pakistan subcontinent or the Lebanon and Palestine. However, all communities join hands together to form a comprehensively strong Muslim community and auger well with the life of Panama.
