Prophetic supplication upon waking up in the morning

Waking up in the morning is a gift from God. It is He who has granted us life to see the next morning of our lives for we were lifeless while we were asleep and it is He alone who woke us up alive after the night's sleep. It has been thus, routine of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to thank Allah before beginning the daily chores of life.

A prophetic supplication attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is mentioned in Sunan Ibn Majah (Book # 34 Supplication كتاب االدعاء / Chapter # 16 What One Should Say When Waking Up in the Morning  باب مَا يَدْعُو بِهِ إِذَا انْتَبَهَ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ ) as Hadith number # 3878:

It was narrated that ‘Ubadah bin As-Samit said:

حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الأَوْزَاعِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي عُمَيْرُ بْنُ هَانِئٍ، حَدَّثَنِي جُنَادَةُ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏"‏ مَنْ تَعَارَّ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ حِينَ يَسْتَيْقِظُ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيكَ لَهُ لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ وَلاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ ثُمَّ دَعَا رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِي - غُفِرَ لَهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ الْوَلِيدُ أَوْ قَالَ ‏"‏ دَعَا اسْتُجِيبَ لَهُ فَإِنْ قَامَ فَتَوَضَّأَ ثُمَّ صَلَّى قُبِلَتْ صَلاَتُهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘Whoever wakes up in the morning and says upon waking: La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa Huwa ‘ala kulli shay’in Qadir; Subhan-Allah walhamdu lillahi, wa la ilaha illallahu, wa Allahu Akbar, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billahil-‘Aliyil-‘Azim (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, with no partner or associate. His is the dominion and all praise is to Him, and He is Able to do all things. Glory is to Allah, praise is to Allah, none has the right to be worshiped but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the Most Supreme), then he supplicates Rabbighfirli (O Lord, forgive me), he will be forgiven.’” Walid said: “Or he said: then if he supplicated, it will be answered for him then if he stood up and performed ablution and then performed prayer, his prayer would be accepted.”

Grade: Sahih (Darussalam)

A very beautifully worded supplication to thank Allah for His blessings and a very well worded one to thank and exalt our Lord for none other than He is worthy of these attributes and none other than He worthy of being worshipped. We should remember such small supplications by heart and keep reciting these to draw blessings of Allah upon us.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.  

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

[Believers!] Tell them: We believe in God and Qur'an and which was revealed to Abraham and all later prophets

The priests, pundits and all religious scholars and imams defend the religions they belong to and are neither ready to accept the viewpoint of the other religions and believe in their prophets other than the one they follow. This happens because of very limited scope of viewpoint and the fear that if the later religions are believed in, their own religion will be left redundant. 

If we look back and follow the history of prophethood and the Divine religion they preached, it was the same as was embodied in all the four Divine Scriptures. It was also been seen that all religions stem from the father of all prophets, Ibraheem (Abraham, peace be upon him). The only difference being that every new Divine Scripture had something to add upon what was revealed previously. And the lineage of prophets after Abraham finally culminated with the last of the prophets, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and last of the Divine Scriptures, Qur'an. And unlike man made religious names like Jews and Christians, it is only Islam which addresses all believers who believe in One True God as Muslims, and no other name attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

And whenever the Prophet tried to talk to them (Jews and Christians) and asked them to join in the final religion, they would say (as mentioned in 135th verse of Surah 2. Al Baqarah): [This is the tradition of their forefathers] and, contrary to this, they insist: “Only if you become a Jew or a Christian that you will be guided.” [And it was commanded by Allah] to Tell them: Adopt, in fact, the religion of Abraham, who was fully inclined [to His Lord] and was not among the idolaters.

Muslims do not discriminate between the prophets of God – something which the People of other Books do. Muslims do not disprove a directive of God nor refute it and believe in all directives without any discrimination.

And next verse, 136th, then explains that we as Muslims believe in all the prophets right from Abraham, and his following prophets and Divine Scriptures given to them and that we do not We do not discriminate between anyone among them:

قُوۡلُوۡۤا اٰمَنَّا بِاللّٰہِ وَ مَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَیۡنَا وَ مَاۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلٰۤی اِبۡرٰہٖمَ وَ اِسۡمٰعِیۡلَ وَ اِسۡحٰقَ وَ یَعۡقُوۡبَ وَ الۡاَسۡبَاطِ وَ مَاۤ اُوۡتِیَ مُوۡسٰی وَ عِیۡسٰی وَ مَاۤ اُوۡتِیَ النَّبِیُّوۡنَ مِنۡ رَّبِّہِمۡ ۚ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَیۡنَ اَحَدٍ مِّنۡہُمۡ ۫ۖ وَ نَحۡنُ لَہٗ مُسۡلِمُوۡنَ

[Believers!] Tell them: “We have believed in God and that which has been revealed to us and that which was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and their children and that which was given to Moses and Jesus and to all other prophets by their Lord. We do not discriminate between anyone among them. [All of them are the messengers of God,] and to Him alone we submit.”

"We do not discriminate against any of them" means that we believe in all the Prophets of Allah and reject none. It is obvious that all the Prophets who came from Allah brought the same Truth and invited the people to the same Guidance and Right Way. Hence anyone who follows the Truth must accept all the Prophets. Those who accept one Prophet and reject the other really reject even the one whom they profess to accept. Had they followed the universal Guidance taught by Moses, Jesus and other Prophets, they could not have rejected any other Prophet (i.e. Muhammad, Allah's peace be upon him). As a matter of fact, they were not following the teachings of any Prophet, but merely professing to accept their own Prophets just because their fathers did so. Thus, their real religion was prejudice, race-worship and blind imitation of their forefathers.

Above is explanation by Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi. Let us now read what other eminent Muslims scholars in various time frames have explained this verse:

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: (The Muslim believes in all that Allah `revealed and all the Prophets)

Allah directed His believing servants to believe in what He sent down to them through His Messenger Muhammad and in what was revealed to the previous Prophets in general. Some Prophets Allah mentioned by name, while He did not mention the names of many others. Allah directed the believers to refrain from differentiating between the Prophets and to believe in them all. They should avoid imitating whomever Allah described as:

(And wish to make distinction between Allah and His Messengers (by believing in Allah and disbelieving in His Messengers) saying, "We believe in some but reject others,' and wish to adopt a way in between. They are in truth disbelievers) (4:150-151).

Al-Bukhari narrated that Abu Hurayrah said, "The People of the Book used to read the Torah in Hebrew and translate it into Arabic for the Muslims. The Messenger of Allah said:

(Do not believe the People of the Book, nor reject what they say. Rather, say, `We believe in Allah and in what was sent down to us.)'

Also, Muslim, Abu Dawud and An-Nasa'i recorded that Ibn `Abbas said, "Mostly, the Messenger of Allah used to recite:

(We believe in Allah and that which has been sent down to us) (2: 136), and,

(We believe in Allah, and bear witness that we are Muslims (i.e. we submit to Allah)) (3:52) during the two (voluntary) Rak`at before Fajr.'

Abu Al-`Aliyah, Ar-Rabi` and Qatadah said, "Al-Asbat are the twelve sons of Jacob, and each one of them had an Ummah of people from his descendants. This is why they were called Al-Asbat.' Al-Khalil bin Ahmad and others said, "Al-Asbat among the Children of Israel are just like the tribes among the Children of Isma`il.'' This means that the Asbat are the various tribes of the Children of Israel, among whom Allah sent several Prophets. Moses said to the Children of Israel,

(Remember the favor of Allah to you: when He made Prophets among you, made you kings) (5:20). Also, Allah said,

(And We divided them into twelve tribes) (7:160).

Al-Qurtubi said, "Sibt is the group of people or a tribe all belonging to the same ancestors.' Qatadah said, "Allah commanded the believers to believe in Him and in all His Books and Messengers. '' Also, Sulayman bin Habib said, "We were commanded to believe in the (original) Torah and Injil, but not to implement them.''

Muhammad Asad Explanation:

(...Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and their descendants,) Lit., "the grandchildren" (al-asbat, sing. sibt) - a term used in the Qur'an to describe, in the first instance, Abraham's, Isaac's and Jacob's immediate descendants, and, consequently, the twelve tribes which evolved from this ancestry.

(We make no distinction between any of them) I.e., "we regard them all as true prophets of God".

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:

Then the Muslims are called upon to acknowledge and declare an overall unity of faith, from that of Abraham right up to that of Jesus and Muhammad ﷺ. 

The principle of the unity and universality of faith, and the unity of all prophets and messengers all through the ages, is the cornerstone of Islamic faith. It lends legitimacy to the Muslim community’s claim to the legacy of Abraham and to the right of trusteeship for God’s religion in this world. It is this principle as a fundamental backbone of Islam that gives it its universal characteristic, which brings people together under the same banner, free of all prejudice or discrimination. It makes the Muslim community open to all people in a spirit of genuine love and peace.

This leads to the conclusion that Islam, in its broad, universal sense, is the true guidance. Its followers shall succeed and prosper while its opponents will never find a firm basis to stand upon. On the contrary, they will live in constant turmoil and confusion.

وَالْأَسْبَاطِ – Used in the Qur’an only to describe tribes connected to Jacob [Ya'qub] – appears 5 times in the Qur’an – of which 4 are immediately after name of Yaqub.

Compiled verses from Qur'an on specific subjects: Religion

Keeping aside the many prejudices about Islam, more and more non-Muslims around the world are finally realizing that the religion of Islam has its universal applicability and it is the true monotheist religion which believes in Oneness of God without any associates or helpers. The mere notion of trinity and concept of father and son just because of miraculous birth of Prophet Eesa (Jesus, peace be upon him) cannot be relied upon, for God is above all human relations and does not need a family or a son to administer His fathomless universe.

Sürah 112.  Al Ikhlas spells out the Declaration of [God's] Oneness). Please read the complete Sürah and its explanation by a number of eminent Muslim scholars to understand the concept of Oneness of God, the very basis of Islam.

It is Divinely said in Surah 3. Al-i'Imran:19:

اِنَّ الدِّیۡنَ عِنۡدَ اللّٰہِ الۡاِسۡلَامُ ۟ وَ مَا اخۡتَلَفَ الَّذِیۡنَ اُوۡتُوا الۡکِتٰبَ اِلَّا مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَہُمُ الۡعِلۡمُ بَغۡیًۢا بَیۡنَہُمۡ ؕ وَ مَنۡ یَّکۡفُرۡ بِاٰیٰتِ اللّٰہِ فَاِنَّ اللّٰہَ سَرِیۡعُ الۡحِسَابِ

Behold, the only [true] religion in the sight of God is Islam [man's self-surrender unto Him]; and those who were vouchsafed revelation aforetime took, out of mutual jealousy, to divergent views [on this point] only after knowledge [thereof] had come unto them. But as for him who denies the truth of God's messages-behold, God is swift in reckoning!

This above stated verse, and many other verses, tell man to believe in One God and restrain from committing the sin of Shirk (that is adding associates and helper or calling someone His begotten son). And those who can really understand the Qur'an are entering into fold of Islam every day, singly or even with their families so as to follow a religion that is the answer to all their queries and presents a wholesome way of life (for which Islam is called Deen, not merely a religion). 

Islam is based on Qur'an, the word of God.  Many non-Muslims who later embraced Islam confided that when they listened to the recitation of the Qur'an, even though they did not now Arabic or what was being said, they felt a serenity and spiritual peace that they had never found before - filling the spiritual void of the soul by answering all of its questions, including - Why was it created? What after death?  Islam thus reassures the soul with hope and removes anxiety and fear of the future.

• [Believers!] Tell them: We believe in God and Qur'an and which was revealed to Abraham and all later prophets (Surah 2. Al-Baqara:136)

Reward for Covering (the Faults of) the Muslims (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

The Deen of Islam lays a special emphasis on taking care of brother Muslims. If a believer finds his brother in distress or in difficult times, he must step forward without being asked to do his best to relieve one's brother from his difficulties. Likewise, if one knows some faults or weakness of one's brother, one should not divulge this to others for it may add to one's miseries and push him deeper in additional worries by the exposure of his weakness to others, especially those already thinking bad of him.

The Hadith, based on the same theme as shared today, attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is mentioned in Jami` at-Tirmidhi  (Book # 17 The Book on Legal Punishments (Al-Hudud) كتاب الحدود عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم / Chapter # 3 What Has Been Related About Covering (The Faults Of) The Muslim  باب مَا جَاءَ فِي السَّتْرِ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِ ) as Hadith number # 1425

حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ مَنْ نَفَّسَ عَنْ مُؤْمِنٍ كُرْبَةً مِنْ كُرَبِ الدُّنْيَا نَفَّسَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ كُرْبَةً مِنْ كُرَبِ الآخِرَةِ وَمَنْ سَتَرَ عَلَى مُسْلِمٍ سَتَرَهُ اللَّهُ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَاللَّهُ فِي عَوْنِ الْعَبْدِ مَا كَانَ الْعَبْدُ فِي عَوْنِ أَخِيهِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَامِرٍ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ هَكَذَا رَوَى غَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم نَحْوَ رِوَايَةِ أَبِي عَوَانَةَ ‏.‏

That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Whoever relieves a Muslim of a burden from the burdens of the world, Allah will relieve him of a burden from the burdens of the Hereafter. And whoever covers (the faults of) a Muslim, Allah will cover (his faults) for him in the world and the Hereafter. And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother."

Grade:  Sahih (Darussalam)

Let us help our fellow believers by being on their sides so that Allah is also pleased with us for Allah loves those who help others in total sincerity and in good faith. and remember: And Allah is engaged in helping the worshipper as long as the worshipper is engaged in helping his brother.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door.  

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Verily I am Allah. So, establish Prayers to remember Me

As Salat (Prayer), the second pillar of Islam, assumes a great importance in the lives of the Muslims fro it established one to one communication between a servant and the Lord of the both worlds. Unless a Muslim offers five obligatory prayers every day, his faith in Allah can never be strong. 

We have posted many verses from Qur'an on importance of As Salat (You may refer to our previous posts on As Salt from our reference Page: As Salat and the second reference page on Compiled verses from Qur'an on specific subjects; As Salat). Herein under, we share the 14th verse of Surah 20 Ta Ha that spells out in very plain words what As Salat is, that is solely to remember Allah!!

اِنَّنِىۡۤ اَنَا اللّٰهُ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّاۤ اَنَا فَاعۡبُدۡنِىۡ ۙ وَاَقِمِ الصَّلٰوةَ لِذِكۡرِىۡ‏ 

(20:14) Verily I am Allah. There is no god beside Me. So, serve Me and establish Prayers to remember Me.

This is the real object of Salat. It has been prescribed to remind people that they should not become neglectful of Allah by worldly diversions and that they should remember that man is not an unbridled free being but a servant of Allah. Salat has been prescribed five times a day to remind man of Allah's presence.

Some people are of the opinion that it means: "Establish Salat, so that I may remember you."

Incidentally, according to this verse, if one forgets to offer a prayer in time, one should offer it when one recollects it. This is also supported by a tradition related by Hadrat Anas: "If one forgets to offer a certain prayer at the proper time, he should offer it whenever he recollects this; for there is no other explanation for this omission." (Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmed). There is another tradition related by Abu Hurairah to the same effect. It was inquired from the Holy Prophet: "What should we do if we remained asleep during the time of prayer?" The Holy Prophet said, "There is no sin if one remains asleep. The sin is that one should neglect one's prayer intentionally while awake. Therefore, if one forgets to offer a prayer or remains asleep one should offer that prayer on remembering it or on awaking." (Tirmizi, Nasa'i, Abu Da'ud).

Tafsir Ibn-Kathir: 

(Verily, I am Allah! There is no God but Me,) This is the first obligation upon all responsible people of age, that they know that there is no God worthy of worship except Allah alone, who has no partners. 

Concerning Allah's statement, (so worship Me,) This means, "Single Me out alone for worship, and establish My worship without associating anything with Me.''

(and perform Salah for My remembrance.) It has been said that this means, "Pray in order to remember Me.' It has also been said that it means, "And establish the prayer whenever you remember Me.'' 

There is supporting evidence for this second statement in a Hadith recorded by Imam Ahmad from Anas, who said that the Messenger of Allah said, (Whenever one of you sleeps past the prayer, or he forgets to pray, then let him pray when he remembers it. For verily, Allah said, (And perform Salah for My remembrance.)) In the Two Sahihs it is reported from Anas that the Messenger of Allah said, (Whoever slept past the prayer, or forgot it, then his expiation is that he prays it when he remembers it. There is no explanation for it other than that.) 

Muhammad Asad Explanation:

Thus, conscious remembrance of God and of His oneness and uniqueness is declared to be the innermost purpose, as well as the intellectual justification of all true prayer.

Javed Ahmad Ghamidi Explanation:

This is the first teaching lesson given to every prophet because the whole religion is based on this belief.

After belief in monotheism, this is the first directive of religion: when there is no deity except God, only He should be worshipped. About worship, I have explained at various instances in this book that the essence of worship (‘ibādah) is humility and servility. The first manifestation of this essence is serving the Almighty. Since a person also has a practical life in this world, this servitude relates to this practical life as well and in this manner becomes inclusive of obedience. The manifestations in the first case are glorifying Him and singing His praises, praying to him and supplicating before Him, kneeling and prostrating before Him, making vows (to please Him), offering animal sacrifice and doing i‘tikāf. In the second case, a person, after regarding someone as an independent law giver and ruler, considers that he has the authority to give directives of what is forbidden and what is not and what is allowed and what is not and submits before all his directives. It is the verdict of God Almighty that none of the above-mentioned things can be reserved for someone other than Him.

The status monotheism occupies in beliefs is exactly the same as the prayer occupies in deeds. It is evident from the Qur’ān that the prayer is the foremost consequence of the comprehension of God which one gets after being reminded by His revelations and, as a result of this comprehension, of the emotions of love and gratitude that appear for the Almighty in a person or should appear in him.

Tafsir Qur'an Wiki:

This brief revelation sums up three crucial aspects of the divine faith: belief in God’s oneness, addressing all worship to Him alone, and belief in the Last Hour. These are the foundation of God’s message that remained the same throughout human history.

God’s oneness is the cornerstone of faith. In His address to Moses, God emphasizes it in different forms: first in a statement bearing a strong emphasis, “Indeed, I alone am God.” (Verse 14) Then Godhead is clearly stated as applicable to no one else: “There is no deity other than Me.” (Verse 14) When Godhead is thus established, worship follows. Worship means that every activity should aim to please God. Singled out among all human activity is prayer: “Establish regular prayer to celebrate My praise.” (Verse 14) Prayer is the most complete and perfect of all types of worship celebrating God’s praise. In fact, its sole purpose is such. It discards everything else. Thus, in prayer we are prepared for contact with God.

Seven people will be shaded by Allah on the Day of Resurrection (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

A true believer is to be role model for others for this is the least expected from him so that others queue behind him to follow in his footsteps. There are numerous verses / Ayats in Qur'an which spell out the character traits and attributes of a believer high in faith and piety. We have been sharing these traits off and on in our posts, and have been compiled such posts in our post: Muslim (Traits and Character Qualities)

Today in our series of posts on Hadiths attributed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ we share a Hadith in the same context as mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī (Book 86 Limits and Punishments set by Allah (Hudood) كتاب الحدود / Chapter 19:  The superiority of the person who leaves Al-Fawahish باب فَضْلِ مَنْ تَرَكَ الْفَوَاحِشَ ) as Hadith 6806, given herein under:

Narrated by Abu Huraira:

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلاَمٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، عَنْ خُبَيْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ حَفْصِ بْنِ عَاصِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ "‏ سَبْعَةٌ يُظِلُّهُمُ اللَّهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فِي ظِلِّهِ، يَوْمَ لاَ ظِلَّ إِلاَّ ظِلُّهُ إِمَامٌ عَادِلٌ، وَشَابٌّ نَشَأَ فِي عِبَادَةِ اللَّهِ، وَرَجُلٌ ذَكَرَ اللَّهَ فِي خَلاَءٍ فَفَاضَتْ عَيْنَاهُ، وَرَجُلٌ قَلْبُهُ مُعَلَّقٌ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ، وَرَجُلاَنِ تَحَابَّا فِي اللَّهِ، وَرَجُلٌ دَعَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ ذَاتُ مَنْصِبٍ وَجَمَالٍ إِلَى نَفْسِهَا قَالَ إِنِّي أَخَافُ اللَّهَ‏.‏ وَرَجُلٌ تَصَدَّقَ بِصَدَقَةٍ فَأَخْفَاهَا، حَتَّى لاَ تَعْلَمَ شِمَالُهُ مَا صَنَعَتْ يَمِينُهُ ‏"‏‏.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Seven (people) will be shaded by Allah by His Shade on the Day of Resurrection when there will be no shade except His Shade. (They will be):

(1) A just ruler, (2) a young man who has been brought up in the worship of Allah, (3) a man who remembers Allah in seclusion and his eyes are then flooded with tears, (4) a man whose heart is attached to mosques (offers his compulsory congregational prayers in the mosque), (5) two men who love each other for Allah's Sake, (6) a man who is called by a charming lady of noble birth to commit illegal sexual intercourse with her, and he says, 'I am afraid of Allah,' and (finally), (7) a man who gives in charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given."

If we critically analyzed these traits of seven people, we will find that besides being instilled with faith in Allah, the other traits are but to please Allah and staying away from lewdness. The Tahajjad prayer is the time when a man is awoken in the last quarter of the night, when mostly others are asleep, and there he is talking directly to his Lord, crying over his sins and begging Allah to forgive him. The tears that flow out in sheer helplessness of the man are the most loved by Allah and it is such people whom promises to forgive.

And the mention of a man who gives out charity purely to please Allah and not advertising his act openly for such acts are more of show off than a noble act. Let us be among these seven people for it requires true and firm faith in Allah with the sole aim of pleasing Him by following His Divine Commandments as contained in Qur'an and as clarified and spelled out by His revered Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. Praise Allah " الحمد لله " after Eating and Drinking (Hadith Prophet Muhammad ﷺ)

If anyone is having one meal, he should consider him blessed for there are countless people who go hungry every night and even a morsel of bread is a grand dinner for them. Those who have plenty to eat, therefore, must thank the Lord for everything He has provided to them.

When I was a child, we read the following rhyme thanking God:

“Thank you, God, for the food we eat, Thank you God for the world so sweet,

Thank you, God, for the birds that sing, Thank you God for everything!”

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also asked his companions and believers to praise Allah after eating and drinking for had Allah not blessed us, who else could? The Hadith is mentioned in in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (Book # 48 Pertaining to the Remembrance of Allah, Supplication, Repentance and Seeking Forgiveness كتاب الذكر والدعاء والتوبة والاستغفار / Chapter # 24 t Is Recommend to Praise Allah After Eating and Drinking  باب اسْتِحْبَابِ حَمْدِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى بَعْدَ الأَكْلِ وَالشُّرْبِ) as Hadith number 2734 a:

Anas b. Malik reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَابْنُ، نُمَيْرٍ - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ نُمَيْرٍ - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو أُسَامَةَ وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ عَنْ زَكَرِيَّاءَ بْنِ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ، مَالِكٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَيَرْضَى عَنِ الْعَبْدِ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ الأَكْلَةَ فَيَحْمَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا أَوْ يَشْرَبَ الشَّرْبَةَ فَيَحْمَدَهُ عَلَيْهَا ‏"‏ ‏.

Allah is pleased with His servant who says: Al-Hamdu lillah " الحمد لله " while taking a morsel of food and while drinking.

It doesn't take a second to commence eating by saying " بِسۡمِ اللهِ الرَّحۡمٰنِ الرَّحِيۡمِ " (In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate) and end the eating or drinking by praising Allah, saying " الحمد لله ". If we make this our daily routine, believe me more and more blessings will be added to our means of sustenance and our overall living become more blessed and bountiful. In fact, we should be thankful to Allah for everything for we are the same humans as those who have nothing to eat or even to clothe themselves to cover their bodies or do not have shelter to be safe from natural hazards and severity of weather.

We see people being born, growing up and then fading away into their graves forever, yet we continue to be engrossed in merrymaking and always intending a boundless, limitless and carefree life.

People have started to dislike religions for these present a different meaning of life. A time of one's being alive on this earth is meant to be temporary, a time of test for everyone. Those who are steadfast and know the meaning of their life, their outlook toward life is altogether different from those who do not see anything beyond this life.

“They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow (NIV).” - Psalm 144:4

“The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more (NIV).” - Psalm 103:15-16

This is how Divine words describe life for us. But do we ponder over these small, yet very powerful and meaningful sentences? Never, because if we do, we will be more worried about our life in the Hereafter and will try to live a time on this earthly world as is directed in the Divine Scriptures.

In Qur'an too, the same message is repeated, but unfortunately while non-Muslims may pay heed to Psalms, Torah and Bible, the mention of same theme in Qur'an seems to them something out of place and meaningless.

This worldly life is only Diversion and Amusement (Surah 29. Al-Ankabut:64)

Ponder over Death and Life - for Allah created these to judge which of you is better in deeds (Surah 67. Al Mulk: 2)

These are just two of the many verses in Qur'an which caution the man to think over life and death much too often for if we forget death, we shall be grossly misled by the evil and we will fall into a trap from which is very hard to escape.  We have already shared a number of verses from Qur'an on Life and Death. Herein under we have combined all these posts to serve as a ready reckoner:

• To Him is your return - This is Allah's promise that will certainly come true  (Surah 10. Yunus:4)
• No misfortune ever befalls unless it by Allah's leave (Surah 11. Hud:64)
• Do not be in haste to pray against yourself  (Surah 17. Al-Israa (The Night Journey): 11)
• This life too shall Pass - Are we ready for the life of the Hereafter (Surah 18. Al-Kahf:45)
• Can a faithful child Disobey his parents? (Surah 29. Al-Ankabut:8)
• This worldly life is only Diversion and Amusement (Surah 29. Al-Ankabut:64)
• Whomsoever We grant a long life, We reverse him in his constitution (Surah 36. Ya-Sin:68)
• Respond to evil with good (Surah 41. Fussilat (Explained in Detail):34)
• Don't claim yourselves to be pure (Surah 53. An Najm (The Star):32)
• Believers, let not your possessions and offspring make you negligent of Allah's remembrance (Surah 63. Al Munafiqoon:9)
• Which two things are a trial for the Believers? (Surah 64. At-Tagabun: 15-16)
• Ponder over Death and Life - for Allah created these to judge which of you is better in deeds (Surah 67. Al Mulk: 2)
• How to be ungrateful (Surah 67. Al Mulk: 23)
• But lo, man is well aware of himself - Even if he presents his excuses (Surah 75. Al-Qiyamat: 14-15)
• Know when the girl-child buried alive shall be asked for what offence was she killed (Surah 81. At-Takwir:8-9)
• Remember Allah in spare time (Surah 94 Al Sharh 7-8)

Herein under, we share a very informative lecture by eminent Muslim scholar Nouman Ali Khan in which he describes WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE IN ISLAM:

May we learn the purpose of this earthly life as told to us in many verses of Qur'an and as explained above in the video, for time is too short before our clock on this earth stops to click anymore and we end up attending a roll call where every act of our time in our 'previous' life will be questioned and result of worldly tests announced. Pray that we pass on that day, for failures will have a dreadful abode of burning fire and boiling waters.

May Allāh (سبحانه و تعالى‎) help us understand Qur'ān and follow the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, which is embodiment of commandments of Allah contained in the Qur'ān. May Allah help us to be like the ones He loves and let our lives be lived helping others and not making others' lives miserable or unlivable. May all our wrong doings, whether intentional or unintentional, be forgiven before the angel of death knocks on our door. 

وَمَا عَلَيۡنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡبَلٰغُ الۡمُبِيۡنُ‏ 

(36:17) and our duty is no more than to clearly convey the Message.”

That is Our duty is only to convey to you the message that Allah has entrusted us with. Then it is for you to accept it or reject it. We have not been made responsible for making you accept it forcibly, and if you do not accept it, we shall not be seized in consequence of your disbelief, you will yourselves be answerable for your actions on Day of Resurrection.

Reading the Qur'ān should be a daily obligation of a Muslim - Reading it with translation will make it meaningful. But reading its Exegesis / Tafsir will make you understand it fully. It will also help the Muslims to have grasp over social issues and their answers discussed in the Qur'an and other matter related to inter faith so that they are able to discuss issues with non-Muslims with authority based on refences from Qur'an.

May Allah forgive me if my posts ever imply a piety far greater than I possess. I am most in need of guidance.
